Going for the 10 star finish

Post by ZombieKillerXXX on Wed Aug 01, 2012 2:40 am

Just a few minutes ago I beat SH1 for the 5th time getting all 5 different endings. I think now the only thing left to do is see if I can get a 10 star finish. I've been working on my time getting through the game. The last 3 times I've played I've been trying to see how fast I can make it through. In order to get a 10 star finish you need to finish the game in under 1 hour and 30 minutes, which seems ridiculous but is possible. Plus there is a bunch of other criteria you have to meet in order to achieve this. I was hoping that there are some people here on the forum who have accomplished this. I'm looking for any pointers, guides you may know of that are really helpful when it comes to the 10 star finish? I've been looking around and have found a few but it's like there either too general or way too in depth. I guess I can't really be to choosey about it sense there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of walkthroughs out there dealing specifically with this. I took some pictures of my game results screen over my last 3 times through, this will give you and idea of where I'm at as far as being ready to attempt this.

I don't have pictures of my first 2 times through, but I got the GOOD+ ending the 1st time and the UFO ending the 2nd time.

Here is my 3rd time through (by far my worst attempt at a quick finish)
Image

Here is my 4th time through (I was really getting serious about finishing faster here)
Image

Finally here is my 5th time through (my best so far, plus this gave me all the endings so I can seriously go for the 10 stars now)
Image

Between the 3rd and 4th attempts I shaved about an hour off my time. Between the 4th and 5th I only shaved 10 minutes off. It's still really hard finishing in 1 hour and 39 minutes, and if I'm that close I can do it in 1 hour 30 minutes for sure. I just need to leave certain items behind and not be concerned about getting all of them. As you can see I almost got every item there was to get, an still posted pretty good times. Like I was saying above if there's anyone who can help me out, give me some advice I'd appreciate it.

Thanks Mike

Your doing better than me that for sure. I've really fused about the 10 star system and even if I did I'm willing to admit that I'm not good enough to get it. I always find myself around the 5-6 star mark.

Yeah, it's definitely not easy. It is rather confusing, cause there is a lot involved in getting it. Here is what I sort of know about getting it. This is just stuff I've read so how accurate it is, who knows? Anyways here is a little list of things I guess your suppose to accomplish:

1.) You have to get the GOOD+ ending.
2.) You can only save 2 times during the game.
3.) You can only use 1 continue during the game.
4.) Total time can not exceed 1 hour 30 minutes.
5.) You need to get at least 150 items out of the 204 that are in the game.
6.) Kill at least 90 enemy's by fighting.
7.) Kill at least 90 enemy's by shooting.
8.) Kill at least 210 enemy's total.
9.) Short range shots should be around 0.40 to 0.45.
10.) Middle range shots should be around 0.40 to 0.45.
11.) Long range shots should be around 0.10
12.) No aiming shots should be below 0.10
13.) Never use any special weapons, (Chainsaw, Rock Drill, Katana, Hyper Blaster, etc.).
14.) Only use your Shotgun when fighting the Lizard boss in the basement of the alternate school. (other than that, don't use it)

Note: this is just some info I got reading some different guides and walkthrough's. It's not gospel. However that should be pretty close to what you need to do. The reasoning behind (not using your shotgun, except for on the lizard boss) is that the shotgun will screw up your no aiming score, which is suppose to be around 0.10. Prime example of that is my 3rd play through. I used the shotgun a lot. look at what I scored for my "no aiming shots" it's up in the 0.60 range. You'll also see I only got 4.2 stars that time through also. Thank the shotgun for that. Anyways, you also get penalized hard for using your special weapons, so you can pick them up but don't ever use them.

Hope that will at least help you out in your quest (OneFreeMan) for 10 stars. I know the basics for getting the 10 stars, I'm just looking for some advice or some tips on going about it. Anyone out there recently achieve this feel free to comment on your play through, experience, etc.

All I can say is good luck man! I've never got 10 stars on there. I know that I can do it, I'm just too lazy to try...and I know if I did try and failed, I'd probably get a time of around 01h 30m 02s and end up destroying the disc and my controller in a fit of astoundment and rage, lol.

The only thing that's really hard to achieve is the time. It'd be a lot easier if you didn't need the Good+ ending, which requires doing the Kauffman sidequest which is where a lot of time gets wasted. All I can say is try to spend as little time in the streets as possible. You should be able to come up with various optimal paths to shave off some valuable seconds this way.

It'd also be easier if it weren't required that you needed to kill so many enemies. Perhaps the SH1 10-star is the hardest to get now that I think about it... That green-level hyperblaster is kinda worth it, though.

I hear you, I have that same fear of kicking ass through the whole game and coming up short on time. It would be my luck to finish with 1h 30m 02s, lol. My temper would probably get the best of me too. I'd probably end up ripping the game system out of the wall, an breaking the controller.

Having to get the GOOD+ ending definitely isn't doing you any favors. Having to run around and do all of the Kaufman crap is really going to push the time to the max. I think what I'm going to end up doing is print out some maps that have the locations of all the items. Then I can plot my course, get only the items I need, and try to work out the fastest route possible. The one thing that will help out a lot is not being penalized for using the bullet adjust, which I can set mine to 6X. Right there will same me time from having to get as much ammo as possible.

To be completely honest that is what I'm worried about the most, sense it is hard to keep track of how my enemy's you've killed. Plus having to kill that many takes time. I'm going to have to be really efficient at killing on my run through. Well I'm going to try this evening/night. I will let you know how it goes and post my results with a picture. The green level Hyper Blaster is what I can't wait to try out. Well I'm going to start printing out maps for my 1st run through for 10 stars. Wish me luck, lol.

All right, I made my first (real) attempt at getting a 10 star finish. I would just like to add that I think you jinxed me NarooN!! I'm just kidding, but I did do everything right except I came up 2m 5s short on the goal of 1h 30m.

Here is a picture of my results on my 6th play through (but the 1st time I could of actually got a 10 star finish)

Image

Even though I only got 9.5 stars, there is an upside to that. I got the yellow beam for the Hyper Blaster which is cool cause it is just as strong as the shotgun. Here is a picture of me checking it out, it's so much more powerful then the red beam.

Image

Now when I'm in the menu screen it say in the bottom right Hyper Blaster Power Up with a yellow line through it. I guess that is a little gratification after playing my ass off and falling short by 2m 5s.

Image

I will definitely be going for the 10 star finish again. There's no way that I can just walk away now after coming this close. Especially after getting gold on: Ending, Saves, Continues, Items, Defeated enemy's by fighting, Defeating enemy's by shooting, and getting gold on all shooting styles. I almost just want to start trying again now while it's fresh in my mind.....soooo close but so far!!

NOOO!!! That's so insane, LOL. Just two minutes... Yeah, you can do it man! The yellow blaster is definitely a lot better than the red one. I might try to get that one myself at the least. Be sure to post back on your next result .

LMAO, I would've thrown my controller out the window at that point. SH1 is sooo unforgiving when it comes to the 10-star run XD.

Shit, your telling me. You can't imagine the disappointment on my face once the "game results" screen popped up and I realized I was 34 seconds short. I have no problem accomplishing every other goal, it's just the 1h 30m that keeps screwing me up. I know where I can cut some more time. I only need 150 items and got 165 so that will save me a lot of time by not getting some of those. I'm going to start playing again here in a little bit, I feel confident I'll be able to get it now, no problem.

Something weird I wanted to bring up, on my last "game results" screen in the items section. You notice how it looks like there is a "+14" in the parenthesis? Well that section is for the "special" items you collect, and there is only a total of 6 special items. Chainsaw, Rock Drill, Gasoline Tank, Channeling Stone, Katana, and Hyper Blaster. I don't know if that is a glitch or what? It should say +6 like my previous play through, but to me it looks like +14. Which doesn't make any sense because there is only 6, "special items" and I collected all 6 on that play through? Not 14....there's no such thing?!?

I see that too, it says +14 for some reason... It must be a glitch, since the "4" is kinda outside of the parenthesis, so I guess they never intended for the number to get into the double digits. Very odd indeed. I guess the game is trying to psychologically mess with you even more now, lol.

FINALLY!!! 3rd times a charm I guess. I got the 10 stars I was after, and most importantly have the green Hyper Blaster now. I only ended up clearing the time by 29 seconds, but that's all I needed. It's weird cause where the items section is, it still is showing a (+14) for some weird reason? I played for a little while to check out the green Hyper Blaster and it is really strong. Just as strong as the rifle if not more, I was running around mowing everything down in sight. What a relief, I'm just glad it's over now. If there is anyone out there that wants to try and go for 10 stars I could probably help you out with how to go about achieving it. Just PM me, here are some pictures....

Thanks, It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Clearing the game in under 1h 30m is by far the hardest part, and the one thing that makes it sooo hard is having to kill that many enemy's. It ends up being really time consuming, not to mention the Kaufman side quest stuff doesn't make it any easier. If you just had to blow through the game with out having to kill a bunch of enemy's it would be easy making it in under 1h 30m. If you ever do end up going for it definitely PM me. I probably couldn't tell you a whole lot that you don't all ready know, but I could definitely give you some strategy on how to go about doing it. What sort of things you just want to leave behind, places to skip all together, stuff like that.

I think I'm going to continue playing SH3 now. I was half way through it when I started going for the 10 stars on SH1, which pretty much took all of my focus away from SH3. Good luck if you decide on going for the 10 stars on SH3, I'm 10 stared out, I don't think I will be going for any 10 stars again any time soon, I need a break.

Mike :)

Haha yeah, I don't blame ya at all, going for the 10 stars will take a lot out of ya. I don't know the time requirement for SH3, but for some reason I feel that I can do it. I'll most likely do it on the PC version since my PS2 save data mysteriously disappeared off my card (cult member infiltrated my room and deleted it?), so I'll prob. either post here with results or make a thread in the SH3 section when I get started.

Cool, sounds good to me. I'll keep an eye out for it when you decide to go for it. Like you were saying, just make a new topic in the SH3 section when your ready. Maybe I'll do a little research tonight and see if I can find out what the criteria is for (10 star finish SH3). I'll let you know what I end up finding out, I'll PM you later. Hey I just wanted to say thanks for the encouragement and support while I was going for the 10 stars on SH1, I appreciate it. :D
