Douglas Cartland - Good enough for a SH protagonist?

Post by Mr_Dante on Sun Jun 03, 2012 6:56 am

I just finished SH 3 (again) last night. To my annoyance one of my PS2 memory cards had gone corrupted so I lost all my previous saves... so now I get the pleasure of seeing the Princess Heart costume again! XD

Moving on...
It occured to me that, although old, Douglas Cartland would be a great lead character for another Silent Hill game. The story could even be set during SH3, he's also wandering around Silent Hill the same time Heather is. Maybe an additional bonus game could of been released like they did with the Director's Cut of SH2.

It's obvious he has a troubled past from the dialogue he shares with Heather so this could be used to great effect as a reason for the town to lure him to SH.

What does everyone think?

It seems like the age of the other SH male protagonsits are around the mid to late 30's early 40's, but with Douglas being 50+ I think it will add more weight to his character, especially as he's a detective. His job will give him curiousity, but his age will slow him down and hinder his progress.

(Apologies if this has already been posted, but I did a search and it didn't come up).

Nah, not really. Perhaps in another sort of game, but I don't think it'd work for Silent Hill. He just...doesn't really have anything going for him. A great character, but doesn't really have a story.

Actually, none of the SH protagonists in their late 30's or early 40's

Harry is the oldest, clocking in at 32. Sure, he's 49 in SH3, but he's dead.
I love the Silent Hill Series. The new games did nothing wrong whatsoever, they were developed well, and did things different. I believe that Silent Hill Downpour will make all Silent Hill fans happy. Team Silent doesn't exist, but their series does.

Well, his story would be fleshed out a bit. We would find out more about his past while playing the game, much like the other characters.
And apologies for the incorrect assumption on the character ages, I didn't think to look it up, just considered them to be around 'that' age.

I don't think so. I like him but a protagonist he is not.

I love Douglas as a protagonist, but there's no reason to make a "Silent Hill 3-2" type game which shows the story of a character from another perspective. They could always just do some audio drama or something to explain more of his troubled past, but a new game? Nah.

A game that plays like L.A. Noire would be pretty lovely. It wouldn't be a Silent Hill game really, but fleshing out Douglas in other media isn't a bad idea. A comic would be grand, but some fans don't like having the "Silent era" touched by anything other than the original, Japanese hands.

As much as I like Douglas, I don't really see how it would work. He's best as a supporting character. Then again...
but there's no reason to make a "Silent Hill 3-2" type game which shows the story of a character from another perspective.
They did do this with Alessa in SH3. *shrugs*

No, definitely not. I think it would be extremely dry and boring. Like Shihao said above, he's a great supporting character. However, I really just don't find any appeal with him being in Silent Hill, whether it be his Otherworld or not.

If they did it like a twisted PI noire type of story, I might get into it. It would still have the potential to suck, though.

I think it's an awesome idea. At least the part about his own Maria-style mini game. Perhaps not at the same time as SH3, maybe just a little game-lit about his life/past.

But I can tell you right now (even before I read the other replies) that there isn't enough of a market for them to justify making it.

It looks like things are getting too spicy for the pepper.
