Um, no. When SH2 came out, people bitched about how it was 100% different from SH1. I liked them both when they came out, but I still don't see how you can call them very similar.

Yup. Besides the name of the town and the reality shifts, SH2 is almost nothing like the first game.

Silent Hill should have an END

Every new SH game gets flipped a ton of shit; that's just how it works. I came in before Origins and everyone crapped all over 4 constantly. Now what do you know, it's a great game all of a sudden. Origins, Homecoming, and SM made people "appreciate it more" apparently.

My personal opinion is that anyone who wants the series to end should actively pursue that instead of sitting around and complaining. Either go into the industry and create a new game that you think SH should be and try to market that instead or take the simple route and refuse to buy anything SH at all and ignore the series; every penny that goes into the series is more incentive for Konami to keep the series alive. For the OP, I think it'd be interesting to see how they would end it if it came to that, but I don't think it will. If anything, it'd probably be an abrupt stop.

Me personally, i've always loved SH4, but i think with the newer games, people just felt "i thought SH4 was garbage but compared to these newer games, it's great". I've always thought the newer games were all watered down versions of the older titles, tho i'am seperating Downpour from that pack, because i was really impressed with Vatra's take on the series.

That's not to say that the newer games are bad,..i still think they're all solid titles, just not as good as the older titles...with the exception of Downpour, which i feel isn't quite as good as the older titles either, but it comes really close in terms of it's creepy and oppressive atmosphere...none of the newer games have made want to put down the controller, but there were genuine moments in Downpour that made not want to continue just because of it's atmosphere and that is a good thing. I think the series has hit a few rough spots, but i think it's starting to slowly find it's way back to it's core...
Knowledge, Wisdom and Understanding....these are the basic fundamentals of life....

If you can't amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bulls**t...

There is so much truth in this post that it's scary. I'm expecting Origins to get a surge of sudden interest and love any day now.

On a more serious note: a business will pump money and time into their cash cows. As long as Silent Hill keeps producing good statistics, they're going to keep making new SH games. It's that simple. They are making a product with the intention of turning a profit, just like every company from Whole Foods to Exxon.
If you are one of the fans who thinks the newer games somehow diminish the greatness of the older games, you are contradicting yourself every time you purchase any merchandise Silent Hill related. I can understand if you are holding out hope that "one day they'll get it right again!" But after four games, you should probably just give it up. Seriously, if you only like half of something then you really don't like it. You like "older" it.

This is completely bitchy and unnecessary to mention, but I simply have to: You are also contradicting yourself if you ask someone else to buy it for you, because companies don't really look at whose name was on the damn credit card.....profit is profit is profit.

It looks like things are getting too spicy for the pepper.

@Wren: Exactly. I understand buying used off of amazon or something, but having someone else buy it for you directly is dumb if you're doing it with bypassing the system in mind. haha

It's a metter of point of reference. Both games got the same game-mechanics, the city, the nurses, maps, dialogs, etc., what has change is just the reason for the player move on. This is never COMPLETELY different, just different - or new if you prefer. But I agree that the "2" was a mistake (also 3 and 4).

Interesting, but I don't wanna the end of the series, not yet.

Comparing with another good Konami game: PES. Critics here said that every new PES always got a new resource and it's already better than FIFA a long time ago. And PES got a strong and clear identity.

This topic really go much far than I expect. There is a lot of IMOs but also interesting stuff (couldn't read it all), like about the audio. I didn't consider the sound and music - it's a multimedia game, the audio tells us a lot. I think there is no bad soundtrack, and all are very Silent Hill like. That's some END I'm talking about. Ok, who's gonna be the first to call Yamaoka ? ...

Nobody said it's completely different, it's just A LOT different from 1. Imagine you bought SH 1, it's your first time playing a SH game. You finished it, you get the idea what is going on, then you play SH 2 and wonder what's all this, what about the stuff established in the first game?

I played them in order (after playing them out of order) and I can see where 2 would have divided people at the time. Silent Hill 2 really set the series up to become something like Final Fantasy; same basic universe, but different characters and plot. However, people wanted some sort of extension to SH1. Thus, SH3 was born. Once the qualms of the fans were somewhat met, I personally believe Team Silent was like, "Okay... we're free to do something a little different now." 4 was met with the same kind of reception that 2 got. "What is this different thing...? Why are we not referencing the 'established canon' blatantly?"

I've had a semi-revelation writing this. I'm not sure what it was, but it's there.

People tend to forget the knee-jerk reaction some had when Silent Hill 2 came about. I'm sure at least a few of the people who now hold Silent Hill 2 on it's (albeit, thoroughly deserved) high-horse are among those who knocked it on it's release for not being a direct sequel to Silent Hill 1.

that's exactly what i think, 4 was team silent's attempt to give a turn to the series but staying true to its core ( hence the gameplay being slightly different) but i assume that as 4 wasn't as well received by critics and some fans some of the tam members just got fed up. but that's just my theory and i know it may be not true. :?

2 also was a lot different and gave a turn to the series but that one was better received even though it was different.
Nobody knows what SH fans want, really.

I think it was a big mistake numbering the games. Numbers is something Konami do for a long time, is an old company, but didn't fit for Silent Hill. If instead SH2 the box came with SH Restless Dreams only, the idea were already clear, no much space for polemics or disappointment with the content. SH3 could be "Memory of Alessa" ore whatever indicates the sequel. Probably they were focused in what they do good: the game. The future were unclear for The Team that time. TH correct this problem, no numbers, only the name. Silent Hill is the place and the subtitle is the story - good work!

My perception about the series is they get better in some points and couldn't keep the same level in others. I'm playing SH2 again and I see that is a product with a care with every detail of the story and gameplay, so as SH3 (didn't play SH4 yet). This is missing today, but in other hand, we have innovation and some audacity. Sure, we want it all and now!
