Xuchilbara wrote:SHT was around in '06 and I remember seeing it. I'm sure a quick search of the posts here from years ago would yield the threads about 4's inferiority. I remember one thread about how 4 was supposed to be a different game early in development and they made it into a SH game and someone who had a negative opinion about it was like "oh so that's why it's different!". I swear that people don't think. I guess ignorance is prevelant among the common people.

I searched around and gathered a few links and choice quotes.

Yep, that's how I remember it. Movie was praised, 4 was hated. Oh how times have changed.

The reason 4 was going to start as a spin off, rather than 2 is because not only does 4 start off in Ashfield, it stays there. You don't go to town physically such as Heather, Harry, and James did. (Nor any other protaginist afterwards.) You always stay in Ashfield.

I thought this would be more than a little obvious. To consider a "spin-off" the same as the main series would be like saying Fraiser is the same show as Cheers.

Yeah, I wish we could still look at old threads on shfcouk, too. A lot of the SHT threads got pruned or wiped out at some point, or I'm sure there would be more here, too. I didn't put a forum on my site until 06 I think, and I didn't bother going through my old threads on the matter.

Still, point being that there is no fan consensus on any of the games really, and views have shifted quite a bit over the years.

SH games don't even really need to stay in SH. We all know how the town's "power" can pretty much manifest anywhere. The next game should be in Brahms and just stay there the whole game or something.

.... New fans move in and old fans are afraid of change ... same as every game series. I loved 4 but for the movie I liked one line out of the entire thing "Look at me, I'm burning" ... haha I love Alessa .... It actually makes me sad that Silent hill has strayed so far from Alessa and her story ... but oh well as long as we don't get another freaking Homecoming then I'm happy

Then it's not a Silent Hill game.

In actuality, only the otherworld based on the mind. SH's power manifests the heart too. Something other places cannot do. There is a difference.

Except it wasn't a spinoff; the developers, as I quoted from two different articles, already said it has already been a sequel.

When they use the word 'sequel' I imagine it being 'the next game in the Silent Hill universe' rather than 'Silent Hill 4'.
So it was always intended to be in the Silent Hill universe from the beginning, it just didn't have the name 'Silent Hill 4' attached to it until later.

So technically, it was a spinoff until it gained the name. Like the Prinny series to Disgaea. In the same universe but not bearing the Disgaea name. It just so happened that The Room gained the Silent Hill title before it came out.

Exactly what Floodclaw said. I think The Room only gained the title "Silent Hill" to sell more copies. It's a marketing ploy. But the plot and otherwise suggest it's a spin off.

They still need to make a Brahms game. Just call it "Brahms", since that's the name of the town.

Don't think many people would buy it based off the name though. Just imagine if SH4 were called "South Ashfield" or something, lmao.

I'd buy that shit.

It's called "Silent Hill 4" because regardless of what evidence you find, it is set in the same universe. It's a different town, but there are definite tie-ins. If we follow the "name-by-location" logic, Homecoming would be "Shepherd's Glen."

I'm trying to think of another series (game, film, book, or otherwise) that carries a numeric title (but are totally unrelated).

Ah. From Dusk Til Dawn is a great example. Each film is a separate vignette of the same universe.

Just imagine how silly it'd be to name each Silent Hill game like Bethesda or earlier GTA titles. Silent Hill: South Ashfield. Silent Hill: Shepherd' Glen. Silent Hill: Brahms.

That wouldn't make anyone any happier.

Yeah, pretty much.

It's somewhat unrelated, but the GTA series is an odd one when it comes to naming and numerals and such. Each numbered GTA took place in a "different" universe basically, like a reboot. I think GTA1 took place in Liberty City, and as we know, so did GTA3 and GTA4. GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas were in the same universe and was a trilogy, basically. Then GTA IV came along and was set in Liberty City again, albeit in a new universe. What's kind of odd is how GTA V appears to be breaking that mold, since it takes place in San Andreas, but is apparently still in the same universe as GTA IV...

I believe the first Silent Hill game has sold the best. Followed by two. Ever since three there has been a steady decline in sales, so maybe Konami felt that a change in personal would reinvigorate the series.

I don't think it has done much, though.

Halloween series was supposed to be like that. Each movie was supposed to be a new Halloween themed story, that's why Halloween 3 has nothing to do with others. But people wondered where's Michael Myers so they brought him back for the sequels.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about that!

That's the same reasoning for bringing back Pyramid Head in Homecoming, too. Not all SH fans are in it for the symbolism. "I JUSS WANTS KEWL MONSSERS."

I think it perfectly reflects Silent Hill. We have our outlying games (SH2, The Room, Homecoming, Shattered Memories). We have our "trilogy" (Origins, SH1, and SH3). We have an attempt at a "reboot" of sorts (Downpour) and spin-offs (Book of Memories, Arcade, Orphan). Where spin-offs are concerned, the GTA universe has quite a healthy amount (Chinatown Wars, Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories, etc.). Those spin-offs do relate to the trilogy arc (VC and LC Stories). Chinatown relates back to GTA IV.

I think it's odd that they rebooted the entire town of Liberty City. It was better the way they re-imagined it, though. They're doing the same thing with Los Santos and its surrounding areas for GTA V. I figure they will tackle Vice City in GTA VI (perhaps now in modern times) and have it completely re-imagined to round out a new trilogy of games.

But... I digress. :P

I wouldn't mind seeing a new version of Vice City. Although even to this day, my favorite GTA playground is still GTA3's Liberty City lol. Might be nostalgia, but I just loved the atmosphere of that game.

I don't think it's nostalgia at all. The atmosphere was perfectly crafted there. There was an overwhelming sense of doom and hopelessness in that game. It's still my favorite of the PS2 GTAs. San Andreas was just... overwhelming in the negative sense. There was too much to do.

GTA 3 was just... dreadful. In a good way. It felt nasty. It felt like a terrible place to live, you know?

Kinda like Silent Hill.

Exactly! It looked like a nice place, but it was just a fascade. Horrible things happened there every day. I liked the one tag-line in the instruction manual, it said something like "No one is innocent in this city",

Even the water looked horrible. No wonder Claude would drown instantly, lol.
