Silent Hill in HD?

Post by oneofthem1s on Fri Apr 20, 2012 2:42 pm

Is it an unrealistic thing to ask of Konami to go back to the original Silent Hill for an HD makeover?

While I understand that much of Silent Hill's fear element comes from the limitations of its hardware, there is no doubt that the age and limited availability of the game, not to mention the general consensus that it was surpassed by its superior sequel, means that those who were not part of that generation will miss out on an experience that was integral to the development of the survival horror genre (a genre that many developers seem to find difficult to emulate). And yes, SH2 is (arguably, of course) the better game, but can only be appreciated fully once you have also experienced the first game, preferably beforehand imo.

I understand that the process would take a few years, but along with graphical improvements, Konami would also have the opportunity to add extra gameplay elements (playable Cybil, anyone?) to improve the overall experience. Anyone think this is possible, or am I expecting just a little too much of the current industry?

I hope they don't. After seeing the HD Collection, imagine having to take a PS1 game and revamping the whole thing...they would just ruin it, imo.

They'd ruin it if it were Hijinx perhaps.

But meh, SH1 is still my favorite in the series, but I don't really want a remake. I wouldn't mind it at all, in fact, I'd welcome it if they did it. But I'd rather they do new games overall. Explore new concepts and such, like they did with SM and DP.

It would be cool though, they could add in more character development and expand on some things that were unintentionally vague.

It could certainly be done, but Konami won't do it.

It's on the Playstation Network store for $6, so I'd say that it's pretty available. The only times I think this ever happened (a complete remake of a PS1 era game) was with Tomb Raider/Tomb Raider Anniversary and Resident Evil/Resident Evil (for Gamecube). Both of those series's are much more popular than Silent Hill, but who knows? I'd prefer for people to work on new things rather than remakes and sequels. Your statement that people will miss out on SH1 unless there's a remake is misleading. If it was remade, they'd be playing the remake, not the original game, so they would still be missing out on it.

I agree. It is a great idea, but shouldn't happen because of what happened to the current HD Collection.

If you can't do it right, then don't do it at all.

Still... I'd buy it. I'm all about nostalgia.

I'm definitely open to the idea of it, however, I can't help but worry about the final product after seeing what's transpired with the first installment of the HD Collection. At the same time, I don't want to use that as a crutch for not buying it or shunning the idea of it. If they do SH:1 & 4 in HD, I'd absolutely give it a go, but probably rent it first, and If I enjoyed it, than make the purchase.

No offense not everyone has a PS3 or would willing to spend a lot of money just for a 6 dollar game

I personally think it would be a great idea to bring the game up to today's standards in gaming ... not a direct port,SM, or Incredible service to the movies. I'm talking about making the first installment from scratch. Same characters same story same environment just with 2012/2013 graphics. Remodel everything <--- (EVERYTHING) and stick as close as possible to the lore of the series. No random PH appearance. No Random childish replacements for the creepiness. just tell the story the way it was meant to be told. Make the fans proud of the devs for once. but I know someone will complain just to complain. lol sorry about the complete scatter shot comment but I was typing everything that I was thinking about the subject and didn't have a lot of time to post the comment. I'll come back later and edit this post and fix it to the best of my ability.

If you've played any other Silent Hills, you most likely have a PS2. If not, then I understand your disdain. PSone games play on PS2s, of course. Sure you'll have to pay $15-30 (maybe less or more) for a copy of SH1, but it's cheaper to buy a PSone or PS2 if you absolutely HAVE to have it.

I think it'd be pointless to remake it from the ground up. I mean, that story has been told. If they remade it, they'd almost have to record new voices... if they did, that would already piss people off. The original Silent Hill is a relic of sorts. I don't think its odd magic could be duplicated even if Team Silent did it again. But personally, I'd much rather see a brand new Silent Hill tale than more of the same (but I'd still get it if it existed).

I'd prefer new games and new stories. This one I've done to death.
The above post is intended to be factual, unless it isn't.

Why a Silent Hill HD remake while you can just pop in your Silent Hill CD in your computer and configure the screen resolution and play it on your emulator? Although that sounds like a good idea if they remake it for PS3 and a higher frame-rate. Would like to see it myself. :)

I think Konami needs to recover it's loses in consumer quality before it decides to take on any big project that has to do with touching the originals. So far, things have been handled rather dismally, both their PR with fans and their fixing/reaction of HDC.

It's just not needed. Let SH 1 be a ps1 game and leave it at that.

SH1's been on the PS Store for almost three years now. While that alone doesn't rule out an HD remake, I don't think we'll really see that happen ever anyway lol.

I would loooove a SH HD game. I never replay the original because I can't deal with the controls. As long as they kept the game exactly the same, just updated graphics, that would be great.
