What do you think of a Rockstar developed Silent Hill?

Post by Q. Valintyne on Sun Mar 25, 2012 5:26 pm

I found this while I was randomly perusing YouTube (NSFW because of Carl's random outbursts).

Sure. It's San Andreas. Heavily dated. And, of course, fan-made. However, it made me look at the combat mechanics in this situation. Do you think that would be the perfect blend that Silent Hill fans are looking for?

This person did a pretty good job with the fog and atmosphere (although it could use of bit of work). I, personally, am truly curious as to how this relationship would work out.

A true open-world Silent Hill game... set up like GTA/Red Dead Redemption. I'm not certain in mission-based gameplay would work here, but what do you guys think?

(His breathing sounds like the new James... lol)

No, imo, I think it wouldnt work, solely because SH's one biggest strength is its story, and with an open world, and non linear path, the story could take a weird turn...for better or for worse, though.

I still think it shouldn't happen. Silent Hill is already being tossed around from dev to dev, being used in all different ways, stretching itself far away from the original survival horror aspect of the game, like book of memories for example. -.-

Book of Memories is indefinitely delayed (until May). It may be canceled altogether due to all of the issues Konami is facing.

Rockstar has a thing for compelling stories... especially writer Dan Houser.

The top three developers I'd like to see a Silent Hill from (that'll never happen) is:
Naughty Dog
Quantic Dream
Rockstar

if Naughty Dog ever developed one, however, it'd end up a PS3 exclusive most likely. Same for Quantic as well.

But damn... would they be good.

Not to mention if Naughty Dog did it, it would most likely be a platformer...that would be kind of interesting actually. Quantic could work, Heavy Rain was an amazing piece of art imo, but how would a SH FPS sound? Not like a call of duty or anything, but like a ... sorry, forgot the name of it, but its supposed to be a really scary fps, and your limited to weapons like in SH. It starts with an A lol. That would be interesting as well.

I would like to see Rockstar try their hand at making their own survival horror IP. And no, I do not consider Manhunt a survival horror game. It's just an odd mixture of a third person action/stealth adventure game with a very dark atmosphere.

Manhunt was a modern masterpiece. I personally feel the second one was highly underrated. It was a good game, just overly censored. The soundtracks were bloody great, too.

Vatra's original concept of their Silent Hill was going to be a first-person shooter. I don't think the fans (or myself) would accept that for some reason. I'm not sure why, but it just journeys into other territory that isn't Silent Hill.

Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us" looks pretty great. I'm hoping it'll focus on fleshing out a great survival horror-type experience.

That was an utterly stupid misconception borne out of the fact that Downpour was being developed on the Unreal 3 Engine. It was an idiotic and untrue assumption then and it still is to believe it now.

Unless you have a legitimate source or some screenshots or something.

Despite the fact I love Rockstar and SH. I don't think it would work great. If Rockstar wants to do a Horror game they should stick to the Manhunt series or create something totally original.

It wasn't a rumor that was born out of the engine, per se. It was a rumor born out of Vatra's track record.

Sorry I don't "measure up" to your condescending bitchiness.

Ah, I must have missed that aspect of the rumour. Still, your original statement was that 'Vatra's original concept' was a first-person shooter, of which there is absolutely no evidence despite the company having a history of action and FPS games. I'm sorry for being so rude, but I was against that rumour spreading from the very beginning and was shocked that people thought it in the first place, so seeing it come back up again...yeah.

It'd be like saying that Origins was originally going to be a racing title because Climax has quite a few racing titles under their belt.

At first it was because of the use of the Unreal Engine. Then, there was this online flyer from the kotaku article and everyone thought "Is the other one the next SH?". So, it was a rumor but it was based on something. We don't know their intention (I doubt it) but it was plausible at the time.

That being said, I'd like to see a RE from Rockstar. Would more appropriately fit the open world and action theme imo.

Interesting...

I'd love to see a Silent Hill (or another GAME for that matter) that uses the MotionScan technology pioneered by Bondi in L.A. Noire. They went under (no pun intended), but Rockstar still owns (some) rights to the facial capture technology and I believe it will appear in GTA 5.

I personally wouldn't want Rockstar to do it - I just don't think their style would work somehow.

I would like to see Remedy have a go, and possibly have Sam Lake write the script - for those that don't know Remedy developed the first two Max Payne games and Alan Wake. Sam Lake wrote the scripts for them. Although I wouldn't really class Alan Wake as horror, I believe it could be stepped up.

SH is a very 'hosted' experience. It works best when every moment is meticulously composed so that the world revolves around the protagonist, in that moment, in that spot. It may feel like you're wandering a huge town, but you're always being led very specifically, through very small locations. I don't think the series lends itself to a broad, open world, sandbox structure.

Agreed. They could do a much better job with the chaos of Raccoon City.

Or that The Room was changed to a Silent Hill game at the last second just because it started off with a different name :nom:

& this is exactly what I was going to say. Their beautiful environments and Sam Lake's writing mixed with the Silent Hill style & lore could really produce something interesting.

The only Rockstar game I've played extensively is Bully, but I do have to say they do an amazing job creating an incredibly immersive world. I was really impressed with how much Bullworth really seemed like a real town; just things like having enough houses to really make Bullworth Vale look like a believable neighborhood is the kind of attention to detail Silent Hill needs. However, I didn't play Downpour so I don't know how 'open' it was, but I think the open world exploration would be difficult to work into the series well. And I'm not sure how the combat would work out and all that.

I've been playing LA Noire and I really think that Rockstar could pull off a Silent Hill game using the open world setting. What Adam_WF said is very true. Silent Hill games are fairly tailored. Each consecutive environment is very different from the last. Downpour was too much of the same. While I'll give them props for the beautiful architecture, the items are not varied enough.
LA Noire is a huge area and yet, each house you enter feels and looks different. Even though a lot of the same models for furniture and appliances are used there is enough variation to make a unique setting for each environment. Downpour was too much like BioShock in that there was a lot of 'junk' everywhere for no real reason and only one type of table, chair, desk, chest-of-drawers, etc. You knew when you entered a room what you could interact with and what you couldn't which presented a lack of mystery. Rockstar let you interact with any number of items during the course of your investigation in LA Noire and even though there were always some items you knew weren't pertinent you were never sure of what could be interacted with.

I don't see how having more of an open world would hurt Silent Hill. Obviously, not making it completely sandbox like GTA, but adding more elements to make exploration more rewarding like sidequests and easter eggs is a great idea. Hell, upon playing SH1 back in the day I was astounded by how open it felt exploring a whole town by myself. If anything, Silent Hill 1 was my true experience with open world type of gameplay.
