Some believe an unidentified youth that was observed playing with a lighter he had in his pocket was the culprit, but evidence was sketchy). The haunted house was a walk-through attraction, just like Borley Haunted Mansion.

I actually live very close to this amusement park, I've been there plenty of times. There's something unsettling about that and I'd love to check out the area where the attraction used to be. I think an attraction like that could be really fun (as long as it was fireproof), there aren't many year-round walkthrough haunted houses.

I thought the Borley Haunted Mansion was a nice touch to the amusement park. The red light at the end was annoying, though. It's the only reason I never tried to beat the game on Hard because I just didn't think I'd be able to outrun it. Poor excuse, but still.

The narrator's dialogue in that mansion was creepy! What exactly did he say again? "he's looking for his way to Heaven. Perhaps you can help him out?" or some weird thing like that.

I got really frustrated at the red light part. The way the camera angle hits when you hit that first turn, I would always keep going straight, and the camera would hit an angle so I think the hallway I came from was straight, then I'd run right into death. The sad thing is I did it about 5 times in a row! Arrrgh the mansion isn't scary anymore I had to run through it so much

The secret to that is turn the controller mode to '2D Type' in the options menu and just hold the left analog stick down. Since the camera is always in front of you Heather will always run the proper direction, until you have to run through the last door but that isn't difficult to get the hang of.

I was playing this SH3 yesterday and got to this part of the game and when being chased by the red light I thought to my self. Is the red light an inspiration to the void chases in SH:Downpour. I'm probably wrong but I just thought I would throw it out there.

It could very well be a throwback to SH3.

I was under the impression that it is a direct reference to the Red Glow of the Haunted Mansion, just re-imagined. Or, it could be some reference to Cube 2: Hypercube.

The BHM didn't really impact me in one way or the other. However, when you're being chased by the red light -- that's what got me. As soon as she was out, I took a big sigh of relief. I hate running away from something chasing me.

ericfordh wrote:A theme I noticed in the game is of dead/psychotic men kind of hitting on Heather, which was a cool level to it all but I couldn't figure out why. For example, there's Stanley in the hospital, then the dude who calls her to sing happy birthday, then Danny in the haunted mansion.

I think the creepiest part in the whole game for me was the guy who called her to sing Happy Birthday. Dealing with a giant worm? Sure. Fighting Claudia's father? Otay. Taking on God? No problem. Creepy dude calling from a phone found in a locker? No thanks. xD Plus, it was night, all the lights were out, no one was around, and it just really freaked me out. I probably would of had a heart attack if my phone had started ringing at that moment. Lmao. As for Borley Haunted Mansion, I enjoyed that part of the game. But, I was a little disappointed that it only had about 2 rooms that you went into before being chased by the light. Wish it had been longer. :/

I love how the attraction is over-the-top, then immediately followed by the red chasing wall of death which (by comparison) is very subtle, confusing, and unnerving. It's a great way to thrust you back into reality after a pretty silly sequence.

The Borely mansion was interesting. At first I entered it and thought "what the hell?! This is certainly different." It almost felt as if Vincent Price was talking to you. At first I thought this is going to be cheesy but even then it shows you how creative and advanced the early games were in horror as they were able to take a huge stock cliche like the haunted house and give it a much darker and more intelligent twist.

When I first saw the void chases I couldn't help but think the same thing. Whether it was coincidental or an actual influence would be interesting to know! Are you there Tomm?

Wouldn't it have been cool if Konami had used the HD collection to expand the Borley haunted mansion, such as adding an extra room or two? It's a shame these re-releases aren't used more wisely, for stuff like this....

I was just playing SH3 last night and thought this exact same thing, hence me posting here after searching out some comments. I haven't played Downpour yet but I've seen the 'void' in video footage.

It seems that the void sucks people in, but the Red Light seems to harm Heather upon getting too close.
I really like the music being played at that part of the game, sounds like childrens voices, maybe children have been taken by the light and are calling out for more to join them...

The Borley Haunted Mansion was probably one of my favorite little parts of SH3. As short as it was, it was pretty amusing. Though, the red light did give me a bit of trouble at first.

Also, I was always under the impression that the body that drops from the ceiling was Danny.

I like it too, it was unexpected for me! I just think that playing it in extra hard mode it's a little booring because I got to restart all over again every time she dies, and she dies a lot! Could have a restart point in the corridor, like near the bosses. But the creation of this part is really one big moment of the series.

Yea the red light is pretty similar to "The Void".... they both do damage and you have to run the hell away from them XD In relation to the post at hand, Borley Haunted Mansion is cool... and I love where the devs were going with the whole "otherworld-esque" haunted mansion. You know... the narrator actually be a psycho instead of actually pretending to be one =]

That's probably my favorite location in the game. Surprisingly, it didn't make me jump at all considering I was playing in my dark basement home alone.

Really? Not even when the guy fall upside down in front of her? I'd jump there and when the floor fall too.

The audio is very well done in this part, the narration and the script. This is the finest Silent Hill of all - not saying it's the better one, but at list the better work... if you know what I mean...
