Similarities between Silent Hill Origins and Silent Hill 2

Post by Averak on Mon Feb 06, 2012 5:03 pm

1. In SH0 Travis has a hidden past of which he remembers nothing. There is something sinister inside him struggling to get out. This recalls the film Angel's Heart, in which the main character does not know that he killed all his victims until finally emerges the real murderer's self.

2. SH0 also appropriated the Lying Figures from SH2, now called Straight Jackets, whose new features is that they embrace their legs around you and go after you running and snorting and vomit stinking and corrosive liquid at greater distances.

3. Both games have visual flashbacks, but SH0 has more than SH2.

4. Do not forget the auditory flashbacks, which are now more abundant than in SH2.

5. In both stories, an important part of the action occurs within a hospital.

6. Travis, like James, are desperately trying to find and turn a doorknob while nightmarish beings appear (which by the way, are hanging from the ceiling).

7. In the scene above, both characters talk to a woman before the fight (Travis with Lisa, and James with Laura). Both women lure them to enter the room, which belongs to a hospital, for the battle with the boss.

8. Nurses continue lurking. Although SH2 nurses were a manifestation of the repressed sexuality of James, it remains curious that Travis sees them the same way.

9. Both characters are concerned about a child.

10. Both characters went first to an apartment complex and finally to a hotel.

11. Both James and Travis must fight with a loved one female: one with his mother, the other with his wife. And both hanging from the ceiling surrounded by metal rods. Not only that, they can move at will following the hero without having to touch the ground.

12. With James, the Flesh Lip, being defeated, folds back the same way the memory of Helen Grady does it when killed by Travis.

13. Both characters, Travis and James visited a hotel/motel in the past.

14. The two characters have painful memories about hotels that brings to mind events of loss of a loved one. Travis and his father/James and his wife.

15. James and Travis enter a room where there are empty cages.

16. In both games, there is a scene where a woman embraces the main character. Lisa to Travis and Mary to James. Both women talk seductively and there is a moment when they touch the cheek of the main character.

17. In a scene of both games, we see a giant mirror, just before a boss fight.

18. In both stories, the characters must recover a key stuck in drains. And the action takes place in a ... Hospital!

19. Both Travis and James checked a toilet to get something.

20. In both stories, both characters have to deal with their own nemesis: The Butcher for Travis, Pyramid Head for James.

21. Both Butcher and Pyramid Head carry big and sharp knives and you can hear them both drag their blades in a scene.

22. The two beings have to do with the psyche of the main characters. Honor to the truth, the butcher is not chasing Travis. Travis is the one who encounters it occasionally.

23. Both Butcher and Pyramid Head kill nightmarish beings (both female) and these actions are observed by Travis and James hiding. This happens in the Other World, not the nightmare.

24. Before the fight with his nemesis, Travis and James both have a glimpse of the creature killing a monster: PH kills a Lying Figure, and the Butcher to the hybrid (a Twoback). In both scenes, these miserable beings emit guttural sounds.

25. Both heroes can take the weapon from their persecutors and use it against enemies.

26. In a variable, when they kill the main character, both creatures rise the hero in the air.

27. In both games, the characters of Travis and James should get into an empty pool to get an important object.

28. In both games, the two characters must jump through holes in the ground to advance to another level (I know it is very far fetched from this point). Travis do it three times (in the apartments and the Hotel Riverside), while James does it more than one occasion (in Toluca Prison).

29. Travis and James go through a hole in the wall in one scene.

30. In SH0 and SH2 both characters descent down a hallway (in SH2 is much longer).

31. In the games there is a creature that is a mixture of two beings that appear to be having sex. (Abstract Daddy in SH2 and the Twoback in SH0.

32. In SH3, SH2, SH1 and SH0, we hear sounds from a tape. Only in SH1 is a videotape, SH2 and SH3 in a cassette and in SH0 you hear it not doing anything extra.

33 In both games, two separate bosses (the father of Travis and Mary) change themselves on-screen into nightmarish creatures (in view of the player) in a suspiciously similar way. They even have tentacles to rise the main characters from the ground.

34. Only in these two games (of the first five, chronologically), the only dog that appears is Mira.(The dog and the UFO Ending in SH0 are mixed together.) In several forums is reported to be the same dog on both ends.

35. In both games, to make to the final, including the dog, you just have to find the key and go directly to the room where it fits.

36 Before you fight the final boss, there is an area to save the game with several symbols grouped in clusters (in SH3 as well).

37. Both games have an ending that shows that both characters are murderers.

38. Only in these two games, regardless of the SH3 UFO Ending─ where previous actions have to be accomplished before you get the final ─ the dog ending makes the actions to be concluded before reaching the real end of the full game.

Ya know, I was thinking about that when I found out about the Butcher in Origins and made a connection to Pyramid Head in Silent Hill 2. There's definitely a parallel there. Though I never realized the other parallels you pointed out. I didn't even think about the part with the motels. However, there is one major difference between them. James doesn't seem to enter the otherworld as much, whereas Travis does by his own free will and sorta wills melee objects to appear and such.

Actually, he remembers it. He's just demonstrating trademark avoidance.

Both characters are concerned about a child

This is incorrect. James isn't. Laura is a roadblock- more of an annoyance as opposed to something actively keeping him from finding out whatever he's trying to find out. If Laura hadn't have gotten in James' way several times during the course of Silent Hill 2 she'd be of no concern to him.

It's almost a reversal of Silent Hill 2, while Laura was a blockade to James' ultimate goal-finding Mary, The sections of Travis' past were actually a blockade to his ultimate goal-finding out what the fuck went on with Alessa. If that makes sense.

But otherwise it was a neat read. Well done for having the patience to note all that and type it out!

Most of the things you've refered seem to be slight coincidences, the only connection to SH2 that I really found obvious was The Butcher. In general the story of Travis as nothing to do with James' nightmare

Those are interesting points, although you can compare almost any of the two games and find really glaring similarities of you're looking.

The only thing that blatantly referenced SH2 was the painting of Misty Days, Remains of Judgement in the burning house at the beginning of the game.

Even Red Pyramid and The Butcher are only tenuously linked in being similar in appearance. Both of them acted differently as Red Pyramid seemed to actively hunt James, whereas the Butcher always seemed extremely passive toward Travis save for the short confrontation Travis had with it.

Travis also was able to overcome his personal demon a lot easier then James was able to.

Not to mention, the Butcher (depending on how you interpreted it) wasn't a manifestation of Travis' Guilt sent to punish him, but was more of a manifestation of his negative emotions that he repressed during his childhood.

Which is honestly why I think Travis was able to kill the Butcher easily, because he found it a lot easier to come to terms with what happened then James did.

I wonder why every game that came out after SH2 (besides 3 mostly) has to be compared to SH2 lol.

But yeah, there's hardly anything similar about the two games. The only direct link I can think of is the Red Pyramid painting in the burning house at the beginning of the game. As has been stated, The Butcher is similar to Pyramid-ka in appearance only, and that's just slightly.

That's what I'm trying to figure out. We have Homecoming and Origins being compared so much to SH2 and it is beginning to get a bit ridiculous.

I like how it's being compared as though there's any point.
Yes, they are very similar. Just about everything Silent Hill has been very similar to 2. Why? Because fans (and developers) keep citing it as their favorite and wanting the games to go back to that style of game. Remember Homecoming? Yeahhhhh.
There's really no point to even pointing it all out at this point.

More coincidences than anything else, but you deserve credit for typing all that out. Kudos.
I love the Silent Hill Series. The new games did nothing wrong whatsoever, they were developed well, and did things different. I believe that Silent Hill Downpour will make all Silent Hill fans happy. Team Silent doesn't exist, but their series does.
