Now that it's out what issues prevented the original 3 cast?

Post by Smiley on Thu Mar 29, 2012 1:36 pm

Over on another site there's already someone at work who found a way to implement the original voices from his PC version into the HD Collection. I've asked if he could do a video or guide to show others how this was accomplished. It's being looked into right now. Here's what he has to say:

Is the desynching issues due to the new sound, music and voices being sloppily placed into the game? I replaced the subpar voices of SH3 with the original from my PC version in the 360 version, and the desynching issue disappeared. Heather Morris' voice matches the lips completely, as do the other actors.
See you in hell cupcake.

Actually, in what you uploaded there each of the files are two channels, one stereo file with left and right for the original voices, and three stereo files for the new voices consisting of front left/front right for the first file, center/sub for the second, and back left/back right for the rear. Note that each file will only play as front left and front right if just play them as they are though.

Anyway, I notice that the rear channels are way too loud considering the camera view is way behind James and Mary in that scene, but that could be resolved in game with mixing by the game's sound engine. Can anyone with a 5.1 setup comment if you get a lot of sound from the rear when listing to such scenes in game, both with the new voices and the original?

These files are "converted" and could have changed the channels or settings in someway. It wont sound properly on SS system if you play one of them. and if you are looking in the setting then those could be completely wrong because the files were converted so the sample rate and bit rate will be wrong. Also it's going to sound stereo (Left and right) if you are listing through 2 speakers. I do have surround sound but I have been playing on a HDTV without SS. I am also almost positive that the game sets up the SS so you're not going to be able to tell if it's in SS with those files.

I'm 99% sure the New Voices are in SS but maybe they didn't set it up properly

Of course the files are converted from XMA to WAV, as the file names make obvious. However, that does nothing to change what I've said about them above, and here is a screenshot of the files merged in Audacity to demonstrate as much (click to enlarge):

Well I don't know what you are trying to say but... How are you listening to them?

I just played it on my SS with an optical cable and what I really notice is the music is really quite and the scene where James gets pushed off the Hospital Roof was really quite and the shotgun is extremely loud! There is sound coming from there rear speakers but is very faint. I wasn't paying attention to the cutscenes in SS but I sounded...a guess normal. I will see about 3 tomorrow.

I listened to and inspected them separately first to determine what they were. Then I merged them with Audacity, exported that to a 5.1 channel WAV file, and played it back on a 5.1 home theater system through WMP.

I don't know if it works that way. Something in the games configures its to play a certain way. IDK It's seems like SS to me.

That's how surround sound is split into multiple stereo tracks and merged back together. Again, the game's sound engine might be doing some level adjustments on each channel to provide better audio positioning, which I didn't do when merging them manually, but it would take someone actually listening to that scene as it's played back by the console onto a 5.1 sound system to determine if it is or not.

I'm sure it's played in SS. Why else would there be 3 files for the new and one for the old.

The three stereo files for the new voices are obviously for the six channels of 5.1 surround sound, my question is one of how the particulars of that surround sound playback comes out.

As the third game is my favorite, the lost of Heather Morris' original v.o is truly a disappointment to the HD Collection, i can bear the change of texture and even the stuttering frame-rate, but there can be only one Heather. It's just frustrating they could include the original voices for 2 and not 3. The new voices doesn't even sync with the characters' mouth movements although i do admit i like Vincent's new voice. Are there so little Silent Hill 3 fans out there that Konami got away with this critical issue? Their excuse for not being able to use the original voice is well.. just an excuse, I really hope they'll patch it with the original voices or re-release in a more finished state in the future. There is no Silent Hill 3 without Heather Morris.

*by the way, my first post. Hi everyone. :)

Here's the proof in action. Taking audio from PC version and implementing it in the 360 version.

Yeah they went extremely lazy with 3. Didn't even bother to put the music in correctly like they did with 2.

I'd say they were equally lazy with both, as much of 3's music is done in a way which is more complicated to implement correctly, and their implementation of the music in 2 is not without flaws of its own.

3 also has the music altered which is not a bug and purposely put in there like that

I just got around to playing 3 and man is it atrocious. At least 2 was somewhat playable. I still can't believe that someone at Konami thought this thing was releasable.

Sure, and so does 2. However, unlike 2, 3 also has some music which is configured by files that work like midi sequences, and changes to such music could easily have been from sloppy porting of the code rather than purposeful decisions to change it.

YES EXACTLY! but SH2 had worked like a midi sequence in the original with 3 but it doesnt now. they are all together. but 3 is just like the original and works like a midi sequence in the HD Collection. It just blows my mind they they knew it was the same way as 2 but didnt bother to do it correctly which is why it's lazy.

I havent noticed and alterations with SH2 music beside people saying some horn sound was tookin out which I don't remeber

Such music in 3 does still work like a midi sequence, but it doesn't come out sounding just like the original by any stretch. For example compare the music in this video from the PC version to this video of the HDC. Again, changes are quite likely the result of from sloppy porting rather than intentional alterations. As for the missing horn in SH2, see this comparison video.

Oh, as for changes to SH2's music, they are there from the start. Compare the music in this video from the PC version to this video of the HDC
