The Silent Hill HD Collection: Why it needs to be fixed

Since I didn't want to create another topic since this is related...

There seem to be a lot of people out there who are insistent that Konami won't attempt any kind of fix for the games.
What are you guys' thoughts on that?

Personally I think they'll attempt to fix it if only because all this bad press will hurt PR for them.

That being said, I think they'd try to fix it regardless, but hey, I'm an optimist.

Yeah they'll definitely try to fix it, else they get tons of negative publicity and fans won't shut up lol.

I think those of you counting on a patch in the works are giving Konami a little too much credit, the fact that they even released the game in this state is insane. They had to have know that the game was broken, yet they went ahead and released it anyways!

Ito also said this on twitter....

So in the PS3's case the problem may be with the hardware, and will be a really difficult issue to get around. All depends if Konami thinks it's worth the effort, they've already shown they don't care about their consumers at all by releasing this broken HD collection.

Also because it's coming, I know I made a couple errors in the video, sorry about that in advance.

Thanks for sharing the video. :)

So what about the 360 version? Anybody here played that version to tell how it runs? I know Whitney got the 360 version and apparently there were audio sync problems in that one. How about the graphic details?

The 360 is a terrible port too apparently, the PS3 version is worse though.

They also need to stop messing around with the audio design.

It seems largely though that the 360 is actually playable though and doesn't have the control problems as much.

Hmm, translucent textures are to blame, possibly? Makes sense. Still doesn't explain why they removed DOF and self-shadowing though. I do recall various devs saying that SH3's engine was complex, perhaps it was really weird and they couldn't (or had difficulty) porting over those features and decided to just drop them outright.

I know. :( I found this out today. I stopped playing the HD Collection and I didn't make it that far into it. That just... breaks my heart, really. :(

The biggest disappointment was that I really wanted these games in a higher resolution. I missed out on the PC version years ago (I am not much of a PC gamer to begin with), so I was really looking forward to this collection ever since it was first announced.

However, the experience has been akin to buying a remastered version of a classic album and finding out that they did everything wrong with it to completely destroy the integrity of the original. My biggest complaint is the sound and the control glitches. I mean, sound is so integral to Silent Hill and the audio sound is muffled and sounds like it is playing back from a cassette player in another room. The control glitches completely ruin any sense of immersion into the game. It becomes distracting and frustrating and makes you realize just how perfectly well done the originals were. This was a shameless cash in on Konami's part.

Nah, the Nvidia graphics chip in the PS3 is leaps and bounds better than the Nvidia graphics chip in the Xbox which handled SH2 great, and far better than the Nvidia graphics chips for PCs which ran both SH2 and SH3 great back when those games were first released on the PC. The PS2 was a beast at pushing alpha textures for its day, but games like Shadow of the Colossus and Metal Gear Solid 3 went far further in exploiting that than any of the Silent Hill games, and both have since been made to run quite respectably on the PS3.

I find all these 'improvements' to be an insult to the fans of the series. They did a really shitty job with this, and I hope heads roll. Half assed effort all the way is the Konami way!
Don't make Silent Hill fans' mad!!!!

I can't believe they messed with the sound design, go to the tub scene and hear how ridiculous and amateur that sounds.

One of the things that made SH3 so memorable was the sound design, it's completely fucked in the collection.

i have the xbox 360 version of this game and just finished my first playthrough of SH 2 with no small amount of difficutly.

1. severe freezing every time an achievement unlocks. (sometimes forced to reset system)
2. cutscene after defeating the two hanging men freezes system to point of needing a restart. (can be avoided if the cutscene is skipped right away)
3. reaching the other side of the lake causes the above freezing problem.
4. loading up or even attempting to access the view results page results in severe lag and possible restart.

i have tried to play this game installed and uninstalled to the same end.

just thought i'd chime in on the xbox issues as well.

Well of course, with the 360 and PS3's GPU's they should both be able to brute force both SH2 and SH3. I think the team that ported it just turned them both into unoptimized messes.

I'm pretty worried about whether a patch is incoming or not, as of now it seems like the damage has been done and at this point it wouldn't really matter much if a patch was released or not, it also sounds like the changes would be pretty evasive and it might not even be possible.

It would be pretty outrageous if a patch wasn't released, audio being four seconds in front of a cutscene is ridiculous for any game and that isn't close to the only thing that needs to be fixed, but I wouldn't count on a fix. It's strange that they stopped communicating after the original patch which was so big and still barely did anything. My Prince of Persia HD has been out for over a year and The Sands of Time is still unplayable, Warrior Within isn't much better.

I'm starting to get worried too. There's been basically NO communication from them on this whole thing. Hulett just had that one post on NeoGAF, however it was so damn vague and there's been no more news otherwise. I'm so depressed. ):

Yeah, it's still early, but "we're working on another patch" isn't hard to communicate. At least I would know they're trying to fix the issues, even if it doesn't.
