Downpour General Discussion: Expectations & Thoughts

Post by Birimbau on Sun Feb 05, 2012 12:46 am

I don't Like 2 things:

1 - Korn as main theme(I prefer an instrumental music or with Mary Elizabeth as singer)

2 - I'm worried about graphics, it seems this game was not made with unreal engine 3, it looks like a little improved havok engine from Homecoming. Look at Mass effect 2-3, both games with the same engine, but much better graphics. Facial expressions are as poor as Homecoming. I'm sad to see that Silent Hill 3, a 2003 game has much, much better facial expressions and character details than Homecoming-Downpour(based in Korn trailer). Until nowadays I look at Hearther, Douglas and Vincent expressions and details in cut scenes with pride, but when I look at Homecoming-downpour(based in the last trailer) I get sad to see how developers are lazy, because even with better engines and hardware, the expressions, some textures and movements of the characters are worse than a PS2 game.

Numb Body(the most realist monster I ever saw in a SH game) and its skin texture, movements, sounds, blood effects in general in SH3, looks more realistic than any monster of Homecoming and the monsters shown in downpour so far.

If Konami wants western people working in Silent Hill, at least leave the game with non-lazy studios.

Downpour IS using Unreal Engine 3. And I felt SH4 had much better facial expression than SH3. The graphics are a little sharper and the mouth movements when a character is talking are much better than SH3. Still don't understand the xenophobia centered around Western companies working on a Silent Hill game.

I was being ironic, I know that downpour was made with unreal 3, but it seems an improved version of havok, because the graphics in general are almost the same as Homecoming with some improvements.

Comparing SH3 and SH4, Sh3 has better details in cutscenes, richer scenarios and more realistic monsters, monsters in Sh4 look awful and lazy, compare dogs in SH3 and SH4, split heads are much better.

Nothing in Sh4 is better than SH3, scenarios, character details, etc, Sh3 is better, both versions for PC.

One more detail: Silent Hill 3 has the best and scariest sound effects of all SH games, playing with headphone, Sh3 kicks homecoming ass in sounds too.

Not to sound rude, but I really don't need to look at the videos. I've played SH3 & 4 far too many times over the years to know that SH4 has better graphics both in gameplay and cutscenes and much better lip syncing. While the apartment graphics are blurrier and a bit less refined, the worlds themselves and the characters models have more detail and a cleaner, crisp look to them than SH3. But the improvement SH4 has over SH3 in the graphical department is minor at best. It's not the big leap that SH3 was over SH2.

I like SH4 WAY better than 3 in every way.

CLARIFICATION: MY OPINION

The only thing that I'd like to have from this game is - the PC version, otherwise I can't play it until that. I remember when Alan Wake was released just for Xbox 360 two years ago. Now it's on PC and I can finally play it. I hope it'll happen to this game as well...

well please..

i have playing Silent hill since the first series..
i always intrigued by deep symbolism in every aspect of silent hill that reflect many protagonist beside the survival horror themes...
in short, it's been the silent hill itself that gave a color for the characters that appears in the series, except Henry(The room)

now for my personal opinion about the "NEW PYRAMID/HAMMER GUY":

i think its konami just show us damn masculinity, macho-man fest for this 'PH stereotype character'

i mean look the representation about Pyramid to James or The Butcher to Travis, to me it looks like represent the dominance aspect of masculinity towards the 'inferior' e.g females, kids

Image

same with the butches was the same to Travis evil deeds

also from what i hear in TCG 2011 trailer indicates the hammer guy was a part of Murphy's darkpast as paedophile

We can't be sure about that though. We don't even know what Murphy did. Yes, there's a memo about child rape or something like that, but we don't know who wrote it and if it's something about Murphy. It's too early to tell really. How can we know if hammer guy represents something from Murphy's dark past?

well... speculating wouldn't ruin anything i think, :)

maybe i could be wrong

but the pyramid-esque stereotype creature of protagonist manifestation was the largest possibility here..

which is sadly the current hint we had to this Hammer man

I'm lazy so here's what I already wrote on another forum:

For a Team Silent fanboy I got my hopes comparatively high for Downpour. After watching the IGN review I'm rather disappointed. I'll still play it and form my own opinion, but it's sad to hear they went for combat heavy gameplay just like Double Helix (apparently the reviewer thought the focus on combat was something new which implies he isn't much better informed than the reviewers at gametrailers who thought the automatic map marking system was new in Homecoming, though it was already in SH1) and the drab looking graphics had some real potential for a truely depressing but compelling atmosphere if that had been what they were going for, but it doesn't quite seem so.

Hope there's some more original enemies than the ones I've seen in the review, too.

REVEAL SPOILER
Big bulky alien guy and Freddy Krueger with dreads? Meh.

I wouldn't really trust IGN. They say that the game is focused on combat, it's the complete opposite. Everyone else says that the focus is on puzzles and exploration, 70% exploration, 30% combat.
You shouldn't judge it based on one review. Check out other ones, like Destuctoid's review and Rely on horror's review.
But ultimately it all comes down to your own opinion.

I'm going to agree and go one step further: Don't let ANYONE's opinion influence your own. Play the game, then come up with an informed opinion based on experiences. That's the best advice I can give about this game...because it's going to be a culture shock regardless...Team Silent "fanboys" probably won't like it regardless, and newcomers will think it's the best game in the series...

Can't trust NOBODY.

I hate repeating myself, but yes, I already said I'll form my own opinion.
I admit to being a Team Silent fanboy but I won't let that get in the way of my enjoyment of the game. It only means I'll judge it more harshly, than I would judge any new IP, for trying to carry on Silent Hill's legacy, which I think is perfectly fair. Don't you?

That's perfectly fine, just wanted to point out that IGN sucks and that a lot of people think that Downpour is focused on combat because of that damn review. It has done a lot of damage.

Well to be fair, they did say it's only crappy fighting and boring exploring in a dull environment.
I'll see if the exploring does anything for me. But it sure did look a lot less compelling in the review than in some of the gameplay trailers I've seen.

No actually the environment is pretty cool.
