why SH CAN continue it's story (indefinitely) - SPOILERS

Post by Purramid_Head on Wed Feb 15, 2012 1:49 am

MAJOR SPOILERS!

Perhaps Tomm and Devin already know this.

Conversations with Tainted Dreams on Hell Descent and CliPs on Silent Hill community from along time ago. Has led me to some conclusions, of which I never thought about before.

Silent Hill has the possibility of continuing infinitely based on absolutes and things established from the old games.

Hear me out, before you rage.

The power of peoples' minds to effect the other [dream] world has been established, it is close to dreaming, which is really seen in Silent Hill 1. (By 2, people start seeing it while awake.) The otherworld can manifestfrom anywhere because of peoples' minds. (However, Claudia could have triggered it in 3.) It trancsends physical boundaries, space, and even time. (This makes sense based on where the ideals of it are derived from.) [Source: The Book of Lost Memories]

The other world has always existed and will always exist because of it's connections to the human minds. What makes Silent Hill's power unique is to manifest what's in peoples' hearts. If someone has a twisted mind the other world will be twisted as well. Before Alessa was born the horrible acts were committed and the prisoners dark hearts and minds "stained" the town's "power", which in this case power probably equals otherworld. Much of Silent Hill 3 is based on this idea of "emotional imprinting" from multiple sources, i.e. minds. The memory of Alessa boss and the crying in the church are all in what is in accordance to the occult memo found in the subway system in 3. This explains why Alessa's bugs and Angela's monsters overlap James's nightmare in 2. [Source: The Book of Lost Memories, The Occult Memo from Silent Hill 3]

With Alessa and Claudia's "powers" I take this as meaning they just have a stronger influence than normal people on the town. That being said, it's a fancier why of saying this is why things overlap that are Alessa's because her emotional prescence from being abused and having powers is much stronger, than say Vincent. Claudia is probably similar. But do note, that this influence on the otherworld is not "to the extent of their power" it's only an "aspect" of their power. [Source: Silent Hill 1, Silent Hill 3, The Book of Lost Memories, Koshiki Guide Book.]

However, people who are ordinary, specifically in mass, can influence the town's power or the other world of that area as well. Due to this factor Silent Hill can continue indefinitely, in the respect of 2. That's where they're one shot games, or it could continue with a major story line addition like 1, 3, and 4. There's absolutely no absolutes on this equasition because of this stance.

They create a source of stories called Silent Hill. It's not like RE where the writer got to search for a "hook" to create the next story. We don't mind cuz we wanna shot monsters, but the fact is that story cannot be so deep as SH. That's why I create the topic about SM, because this game don't use the source, just the image of SH. It seams in Downpour they are using the source again.

As we are all eagerly awaiting 'SH: Downpour' release so that we may all once again venture into a game that engulfs our minds with it's twisted nightmares that it brings with a fresh pine scent every time, we can only hope that should further SH games be made post SH Downpour, that the developers will take aspects from each Silent Hill and somehow combine them to release the greatest Silent Hill game of all time, with our good friend Pyramid Head perhaps making an appearance besides 'The Butcher' (can't remember the game he was in) .

I would like to see the 'Ash' that engulfed Silent Hill return as that really does add to the tense 'wtf is going to happen next' experience.
Also i enjoyed SH4: The Room, as it really does remind me of 'Room 1408' with John Cusack in parts, but mainly i found that it had it's own 'unique' and 'original' story that blended to some extent with the history of Silent Hill.. (Yeah we all know that it was not originally intended to be a part of the SH series).

I never used to like Pyramid Head to be honest, i used to actually think 'what kind of crappy enemy is that supposed to be' but that was before i actually gave SH2 a chance and boy oh boy was i wrong about him, he really does bring a certain element of 'fear' or 'suspense' to the game that some normal hockey mask wearing homicidal maniac just doesn't cut (sorry Jason Vorhees, you were scary in the 80's but nowdays, your just a bully with a grudge)

Anyways i'll leave it at that lol.

Yeah...i've always felt this way about this series. You can always have a unique fresh experience every time because the series isn't dedicated to a strict storyline. This series is set up for each outing to be different with interesting characters and storylines. I've always compared this series to the old twighlight zone series in that those episodes all implemented different characters with different storylines in bizarre scenarios.

Imagine a SH where it's set up like how Heavy Rain was set up, in that you have 4 characters whose lives come together in a way that none of them have a clue but a certain incident ties them altogether. Heavy Rain would've been brilliant if they could've just tightened up the plot just a bit more and tweaked it. Imagine A SH where you control 4 characters and all of their storylines comes together disturbingly, but beautifully at the end. SH is a great platform because every game doesn't have to be about blood and gore....you can have a horrifying disturbing experience by just keeping elements of it subtle and obscure.
Knowledge, Wisdom and Understanding....these are the basic fundamentals of life....

If you can't amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bulls**t...

I've heard the theory of combining the positive aspects from all the games, but I just doubt that would make the.best game ever. It would prolly look like a Katamari made out of nurses, dogs and executioners. And might suck more than the world war 2 games at the turn of the century.

On topic though, actually ignoring all that fancy logic and debate. The game can go on as long as we buy it.

Now you touch a key point of this kind of discussion. I saw a TV show (on youtube) past week about movies. They talk about the last "disagreement" between George Lucas and Star Wars fans. He got the vice of play with the original movies of the series... One of the TV guys tell something like this: "once you create something like Star Wars, it does not belong to you anymore, belongs to the audience, and people don't like messing the original stuff". I have to agree with the guy by the fact the audience pays for the continuity of the series. It's a social contradiction: Lucas got the power upon the series, but depends on fans to keep "creating" (he stop creating a long time ago...). Personally, I'll not watch SW1 3D...

The same applies to Silent Hill, the source of creation will never end, but the fans patience, oh yeah!

I think when it comes down to it a Silent Hill title is still likely to sell more units than a stand alone horror title or new series and unless people stop buying the new games altogether, Konami will keep giving us SH games for a while to come, simply because they'll want to keep playing that relatively isolated market. I'm willing to bet most people that played RE 1 & 2 are still playing the new games as well even if they only played it for the horror/sci-fi aspect originally. The plus SH has is that it was always more horror and it will never wander as far as RE in that sense, even though they might experiment. You just know that after Metal Gear Rising we're gonna get a real sneaking game again at some point, simply because MGS was what people turned to for that, and they have somewhat of a monopoly, the same applies to Silent Hill, I think.

There are plenty of things SH can still experiment with, we've already had Shattered Memories & now Book Of Memories and 4, 0rigins and Homecoming all had unique aspects to them compared to 1-3 while always remaining horror at heart.

The way I look at Silent Hill, and why I agree totally with the OP...

I agree with your post on the infinite stories possible under the Silent Hill name.
Stephen King's Desperation / Regulators which inspired SH1 could even be used where all the character's of the franchise live once more in an alternate reality taking different roles and such (i.e. Married in SH2, but now siblings instead or bad guy in Homecoming, but now a hero).
You should read the post of plot ideas I just posted and tell me what you think. I'm new to the community.
