been meaning to post this and several other things from sh2, but i've been lazy.

Occasionally, if you go through the game discs, you can find stuff that didn’t make it to the final version. In SH1, there’s the Jacob’s Ladder poster. In SH3, there’s a photo of Heather and Harry. In SH4, there’s a channeling stone. SH2 has nude bodies.

If you look through the concept art on Art of Silent Hill, you will find 2 images of the room where you start fighting Eddie, but there are weird floating naked bodies.
Image
These were actually modeled for the game, and the models can still be found on the disc. Weird to imagine that part of the game with floating bodies…

Very interesting post.

I wonder what it would be like fighting Eddie with all those floating bodies around, although they would probably take the atmosphere away a little

Yeah...i was thinking the same thing. I'm glad they went with the hanging meat sacks instead of the floating bodies. The floating bodies probably could've been used for a weird otherworld section for future games tho....

It's a great concept, but the final version of the area is better off without them. Now other sections of the game/other games however...

Can nude bodies make trouble with the law or age rating? I remember that Sony was concerned with "too adult" games, the idea was keeping light. There is some adult titles, but is rare. Maybe that was an element to decide stay out with those bodies...

Well, it's not like you can see their junk.

Seriously though, I think the problems with Silent Hill 1 and its school monsters was that you were actually shooting creatures that looked a bit like actual children. No idea WTF you would have done in a room full of floating bodies, but they don't really look killable.

When I try to imagine it, I just can't figure out how it would work with the mood and story. I'm sure they had an idea at some point, but I'm missing it.

Yeah, there's a few games with penial depiction and the concern for the SH1 monsters I think was that there were so "human-like". It's why they only appear in certain versions of the game.

Apart from serving as wtf props, they could indicate Eddie's victims.

True, and I know it's silent hill, but somehow it stills feel too weird for me. At least with the sides of beef wearing shorts, it's slightly less like a literal human corpse. I'm not saying I don't see symbolism, I'm saying I think it still seems weird to have human corpses just floating in the air at that point. I like the concept art pics, but in-game, i think the idea is weird.

@Xuchilbara: What you said, and I think also just because they look like children, too. Usually games are ok with killing adults, but maybe not so much with shooting hordes of children in a school. ^_^

I think this part is perfect as it is - and it's hard to me saying that. It's normal an artist cut out the excessive elements, it's part of the job. All they way through the prison it's artistic, with those corps abandoned etc. and the final dialog with Eddie...

The floating corps are cool, but I don't think it fits in this part, maybe in a cutscene of some delusion of James.

Hey, Harry was just ending the bullying. Every time he peacefully entered the school they laughed and teased him. He was the inspiration for things like Columbine.

Actually it seems that floating bodies would be in the first area where you fight Eddie, not in the second area with the hanging meat sacks. There are corpses present in the finished game in that area, they have clothes and don't float though.

But still, seems like it would be a bit crowded in there.

Like Eddie says, "a corpse can't laugh." These were clearly the naughty children.

The final version was indeed better off without these, SH2 had lot of metaphors and themes which wouldnot have been jelled better with these rather explicit images.

I know. But you still start fighting him there.

I could see it as part of a hallucination or something, but meeting Eddie again in a room full of floating nude guys seems weird. The meat bodies have a function, you can hide behind them. These ones would sort of just get in the way.
