I think this is my favorite SH game.

After really thinking about it, the standard arguments applied. The music is great, the gameplay is different in some ways, but still great, the atmosphere isn't as dark and gritty as the originals, but it has it's own feel and that's great.

I think what REALLY sells it for me, though, is the whole "you're stuck in this room bitch" FPS aspects. I loved that, like seriously. It's something that scares me in real life...the inability to leave at will. The first few times I played it, I really really felt like I was choosing between a rock and a hard place while staring at the hole in the wall. Do I want to leave the safety of a cage just to have to endure a Nightmarish Dungeon?

And you have to. Man, that hit me in the video game tender spot. I think that's somewhere just above the left kidney...

But anyway, the story was superb in my opinion. I know a lot of fans bashed a lot of aspects of this game, but I have to say, I could play it over and over and still enjoy it.

To end my retaining wall of a post, does anyone know of any other "trapped in your room" type of games that I could look for? I really dig the concept. I really liked Amnesia, not for the chase sequences (which didn't scare me), but rather for the "escape the area" puzzles.

SH4 is my second Favourite and is the first SH games I played. I too liked the fact that you are stuck in a room and your only way out is to goes through Hell. Also its fairly unique to the rest of the SH series because of it. In the first play through the games really scary as I too enjoyed the story. Especially the back story of Walter Sullivan who is I feel the best antagonist in the SH antagonist.

I think that's a huge selling point in and of itself. It was good to see them changing tactics a bit with the feel of the game. I wish they would have tapped into the same feel in another game in the series. For the most part, they just seem to copy 1-3 in many ways instead.

And I don't know why everyone hated the item box so much. It made WAY more sense than putting dozens of heavy items inside your vagina like Travis, and it was a unique mechanic.

Reading that made me think of Travis as a hermaphrodite.

But like you, I didn't mind the item box. One thing I forgot to say is the fact that SH4 was unique maybe why some don't like it. Some people don't like change.

Yeah...i just finished this game not too long ago, and i've always loved this game, like others have stated, the whole being locked up in your room concept was something truly unique and i feel the story even rivals 2...the first person perspectives and the hauntings later on in the game were truly disturbing and terrifying...

it's truly bizarre seeing the outside world going on as if nothing is happening while you're dealing with the madness in your apt...i loved the slow descent into madness. Great game and i can't understand why there is so much hate for it...

This game is the only SH game that made me poop a little.

I just don't like Henry's lack of visible emotion.
I love the Silent Hill Series. The new games did nothing wrong whatsoever, they were developed well, and did things different. I believe that Silent Hill Downpour will make all Silent Hill fans happy. Team Silent doesn't exist, but their series does.

I like to think this games true focus is about the supporting cast and antagonist. In my opinion, Henry is really only meant to act as a player avatar so you can appreciate the rest of the cast which is made up of a cast of great characters, and I'm sure many will agree that Mr Sullivan really takes the cake in this respect.

Agreed. I felt in tune with Henry more than most protags. They provided some good backstory for him in his personal reflections when looking at objects or reading things, so he had a personality if you tried to decipher it. I like how he took things in stride because he knew he had no choice in the matter. Instead of being all "OMG WTF is going on (cries and dies)" like Harry and James did at times, he just whispered "What the Hell" and kicked ass where applicable.

I like to think that Henry was more sensible and adaptable than any other protagonist in the series.

Why rag on Travis for the items? No one's gonna talk about Heather somehow carrying a 9mm handgun, a shotgun, an SMG, with countless ammo supplies for all three, as well as a fucking maul, a katana, multiple pipes, among other things? Same with Harry and James lol.

As for SH4, I liked everything about it besides the abysmal gameplay, which was so bad it kept me from even beating it myself.

You forgot the Lightsab- err, I mean Beam Saber, Flamethrower and the Knife.

What? The gameplay in 4 wasn't bad... :(

And Heather had super voodoo powers.

It was a little better than the gameplay of first three games but it had some annoying aspects to it. Eileen, ghosts and that item limit thing.

This game is flawed but it's certainly one of the best for me.

I missed the joke endings and star rating system.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this game is very underrated :)

It's generally considered the favorite among my friends as well. I think my sister (suuuuuper huge SH/RE fangirl, like more than I've ever been a fanboy) likes SH4 the best as well.

It's strange really. Most everyone you ask online talks about how amazing 2 is. Other than the great story work, memorable atmosphere, and loveable quirkiness of James, 2 wasn't so hot, IMO.

I really like Silent Hill 4 The Room. I'm finally playing the full version and I'm liking it alot, I love the feeling and the atmosphere, it's okay that it's not perfect, but it's really good, specially the story that is even more surrealist and seems to be "special".

After Silent Hill 2 (that was my first and my favourite) I think The Room comes next.
