Rose's Sweater

Post by HellFrozenJames on Wed Aug 10, 2011 7:17 pm

I'm sorry if this has been brought up/discussed/clarified in the past, but what is the deal with Rose's sweater changing color throughout the movie?
I mean, it starts off kind of reddish brown, then gradually fades into grey, and then ends up bright blue... And then goes full on red afterwards...
Is there any kind of explanation/symbolism behind it?

It's probably a continuity error.

Magic is the only explanation.
I love the Silent Hill Series. The new games did nothing wrong whatsoever, they were developed well, and did things different. I believe that Silent Hill Downpour will make all Silent Hill fans happy. Team Silent doesn't exist, but their series does.

No, there actually was a point to it, I just can't remember what it was. Probably because it's the movie and who cares.
The above post is intended to be factual, unless it isn't.

It was definitely too "deliberate" to be a continuity error. I mean, it's the wardrobe, apart from "they have a bloodstain in this scene, but now they don't", there wouldn't be continuity errors.
In any case, if somebody remembers the exact point of the changes, especially during the first 2 acts, I'd like to know.

I remember that it gets redder throughout it because of all the blood and rust. o.o; They talk about it on the DVD special features. Someone should go watch?
I haven't seen it in a long long time.

I don't remember the bright blue phase. The next time I'm watching the movie, I'll try to keep an eye out for that. I'm curious now.

It looks like things are getting too spicy for the pepper.

Pretty much as soon as she gets into the school... It's either Blue or Grey, but once everything turns into the Otherworld and meets up with Cybil, it's blue for sure, all the way through the hotel part.

According to the IMDb trivia page:
Around 100 different copies of Rose's outfit were made. It started out with soft summery colors and as the movie progressed it became grayer and eventually blood red. The change in the outfits were so subtle that it was barely noticeable.

So yeah... with 100 outfits made to pull off the effect, it was pretty darn deliberate. What the point of this effect was, I'm not sure exactly.

I always wondered what was the point of that as well.

Whatever your opinions on the meaning behind it (if any) it's pretty damn cool when you know about it.

It was to show the impact of Alessa's world on Rose. Throughout the film, the outfit turns more and more grey to match the Fog World, and then when Rose reaches the core of the Otherworld, it turns blood red to match. It's symbolically saying Alessa is affecting Rose.

That does make sense.

I can agree with this wholeheartedly. My preconceived notion of this (while still reading the comments on the first page mind you), was that maybe It was due to the effects she was enduring transitioning from the Otherworld back into the The Town. I didn't really think of Alessa's involvement, just strictly the change. In any case, your theory seems much more plausible. Kudos. :)

Let's don't forget that gray can get the environment color. The screen for movie projection is never white, but a very clear gray, to get better colors. But this can also be deliberate, they intent that Rose get the environment colors to increase the impact of the scene and the differences between the situations.

When I watched the movie for the first time I always assumed that the blood red sweater was a nod to Maria maybe? Looks pretty similar.
