Silent Hill Community • View topic - What sort of looks do you get?

Okay, so I was just explaining a funny plot idea for my fan story Silent Hill Babysitting Squad to my mother. I ended up having to explain a lot of it, and as I was explaining it and getting to the funny part, she got a more and more confused and startled look on her face.

Does this happen to anyone else here when explaining the series to someone else? Because that was just about as funny as the idea I had for the story.

I get the STRANGEST looks when people ask me to try to explain Maria to them.

...and then I find out most of them never actually finished the game. No wonder they're confused! They quit half way through.

I usually get either a blank stare or a look that reads something like "What on earth have I gotten into, I wasn't expecting the story to be so complicated, I sort of wish I'd never asked".

The difficult part is trying to come up with a more simplified version lest I a) make myself look more of a nerd than I already am, and b) bore them.

I'm like The Gentleman.

I don't get any looks. I just simplify the fuck out of it and try not to go into too much depth, i.e. branch off into other subjects that they didn't ask about. Works pretty well.

I have long abandoned explaining it all to anyone. All I can say is "Play it for yourself and see" But even that gets varied success. Not everyone is in it for the in-depth storyline I guess.

I've got a video-game-obsessed troll friend who mocks me for liking Silent Hill 'cause he doesn't. I only recently realised he was only trolling, so I've managed to ignore him now.
As for explaining it, the few people that I have explained it to are interested in the storyline, but don't like the gameplay.
I also have pretty much no friends in real life - so LIFE IS GOOD!!! :mrgreen:

Doesn't help with all that jap story telling wrapped up in western clothing, making the mundane scary but sometimes very complicated aswell! Trying to explain how repressed characters "create" their world is not easy concept for the normal folk bless 'em. But more people should definitely put the effort in to understand....lots of rewards

I usually don't get weird looks. My mom thinks it's interesting, and my friends think it's pretty cool.

People never ask and I almost never volunteer. So, no dirty looks.

I've made one person a convert , another Silent Hill curious, and a third just said that the first two where meh even though he only played through each once. The only time I get weird looks is when I go somewhere and forget that I have my flashlight in my breast pocket of my coat or vest. I'll have to upload a pic of my flashlight one day if anybody is interested in such things.

I generally don't tell people that I play Silent Hill. My mother is a religious extremist and if she found out, she would personally drive two thousand miles, kidnap me, chain me up, and have Bob Larson (look him up) perform an exorcism on me. Basically, my life would become Silent Hill.

I've gotten quite a few weird looks. I told a bunch of friends of mine about the scene where Heather vomit up the fetus of god. And the looks where mixed. Half of my friend looked at me with a smile on in awesomeness while the other looked at me in disgust to the point where one of them spat out their drink on the floor. Which was funny. One thing that interesting is that when I tell them about Walter Sullivan,especially his past the looks I get are sympathetic.

I get weird confused looks all the time. People ask me about my tattoo ( i have the logo for silent hill homecoming on my left arm) and when I tell them what it is, most of the time, they are like " oh, what's that?"
I try to explain it, but it's greek to them. Silent Hill is pretty much only understood by us fans.
Other people have no idea lol

The same looks I get when I explain to my friends why I love My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
At first they're creeped out and disturbed, then they try it and LOVE it!
