SH Games Modding FAQ

Extracting/Modifying Textures:

*To download zip files of the textures, go here.

*To download some ripped models, go here.

This is a collection of info and links relating to modifying the games. This is a work in progress. I am leaving out some programs that were made obsolete by other programs, like the programs that only modify one Heather shirt or Vincent's clothing (because all of this could be done using the texture explorer instead). For unedited skins, go here. A list of the in-depth tutorials and some skins I made available for download, go to the modding section.

Silent Hill (PSX)
Extracting Textures/Files:
*Silent Extractor from here for extracting files
*PSIctureis a utility that lets you view and extract textures from PSX games.
*TIMViewer - like PSicture, but allegedly allows you to reinsert modified textures. I haven't had any luck. The problem is probably that you need to work within the existing palette. This could conceivably be done with a ripped ISO of the game on your hard drive, extracting, editing, then re-inserting.

Silent Hill 2 (PC)
Extracting/Modifying Textures:
*SH Texture Explorer: This program allows you to open the arc, bin, or mdl files, view the textures, extract and replace them. Works perfectly with SH2 and lets you view all the textures. Click the link for further instructions and to download the program.

Viewing Models and Levels:
*SH234 Level/Model Viewer will allow you to view the models and levels. Use the mouse to move around and change your view. Click the link for more instructions and to get the program. You can turn on the animation view but it doesn't work right with SH2, and it doesn't allow models to be dumped from SH2.

Dumping Models and Levels:
*3D Ripper DX can be used for ripping models and levels .obj and other filetypes. It can take a while for larger levels, and the major problem is that, oftentimes, the resulting dumped file is kind of skewed sideways. Still, it's fairly easy to use and worth a try if you want to dump things from SH2. It only works on older versions of DirectX, which may also be a problem if you're using it with a newer computer.

Char/Camhacks:
*Silent Fly allows you to move the camera by changing its coordinates, also to move James/Maria (useful for getting past barriers or to places you aren't supposed to go).
*SH3 Frame of Vision hack tutorial-allows you to get closer or further away from Heather, which can allow you to see more stuff.

Editing Resources:
*SH Resource Editor allows you to view any text in the game as well as change it. This is especially useful for those who want to translate the game into languages it was not released in.

Basic guide to Modding Maria by Mercury
*Click here to read Mercury's helpful guide to modding maria, which can be extended to other characters/games, as well.

Silent Hill 3 (PC)
Extracting/Modifying Textures:
*SH Texture Explorer: This program allows you to open the arc files, view the textures, extract and replace them. It only allows you to view and edit some of the files in SH3, however. Most of the locations can't be viewed or changed in this program, but most of the monsters as well as all characters can be changed. Click the link for further instructions and to download the program.

Viewing Models and Levels, Extracting Textures/Models:
*SH234 Level/Model Viewer will allow you to view the models and levels. Use the mouse to move around and change your view. Click the link for more instructions and to get the program. You can also view the animations. Models and textures can be dumped using the program, including all the textures you can't view/dump with the texture explorer (you can't modify them, only view/extract though).

Dumping Models and Levels:
*3D Ripper DX can be used for ripping models and levels .obj and other filetypes. It can take a while for larger levels, and the major problem is that, oftentimes, the resulting dumped file is kind of skewed sideways. For SH3, I'd recommend trying the Model viewer first for dumping models, but this could be used to dump the level data.

Char/Camhacks:
*Silent Fly allows you to move the camera by changing its coordinates. You can't change Heather's position though.

Editing Resources:
*SH Resource Editor allows you to view any text in the game as well as change it. This is especially useful for those who want to translate the game into languages it was not released in.

Silent Hill 4 (PC)

Extracting/Modifying Textures:
*SH Texture Explorer: This program allows you to open the bin files, view the textures, extract and replace them. Everything can be viewed and changed, but the names are often confusing for SH4. Click the link for further instructions and to download the program. Click here for a partial list of the filenames in SH4.

Viewing Models and Levels, Extracting Textures/Models:
*SH234 Level/Model Viewer will allow you to view some of the models in SH4, but not everything displays properly.

Dumping Models and Levels:
*3D Ripper DX can be used for ripping models and levels .obj and other filetypes. It can take a while for larger levels, and the major problem is that, oftentimes, the resulting dumped file is kind of skewed sideways.

Editing Resources:
*SH Resource Editor allows you to view any text in the game as well as change it. This is especially useful for those who want to translate the game into languages it was not released in.

Silent Hill Homecoming (PC)

Extracting Textures, dumping data:
*Scarlet is a program that lets you view and extract many types of data from SHH. Read the page linked and the README for further instructions. You have to open the first file in a series, then it will list everything in it: models, textures, sounds, and other data. The GUI allows you to easily extract anything, including models. I have seen screenshots showing that people have re-inserted textures, but I'm not sure what program they used. This is very useful for viewing and extracting data, however.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories (Wii)

Extracting Textures, dumping data:
*Dolphin Emulator is a Wii emulator. Some computers may have trouble running it or problems with lagging. The only thing you can really do with it, besides play the game, is dump textures. You need to turn this on in the graphics options, and then play through the game to dump the textures from the memory. You can't reinsert, and you can't dump anything else.

Silent Hill 0rigins (PSP)

I am not aware of a way to modify or extract anything from this game.

Silent Hill Play Novel (GBA)

I am not aware of a way to modify anything from this game. I tried some utilities once in attempt to translate the ROM, but without success.

Ripping Stuff from PS2 discs/disc images:

Piece0fSheet666 wrote:Maybe you can make something out of this? http://forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5709

Maybe with this tool? http://www.fileplanet.com/205418/200000 ... xmod-v0.9b (Here's a guide)

That's interesting and maybe someone could use it. I don't have Origins on PS2, and I doubt my computers would run a PS2 emulator, even if I did. They have a hard enough time running DXripper with the PC version of SH2 (and it won't even work for me in SH3 and SH4). I mean, my other computer is better than this one, but 3dripperDX only works on WinXP and this one has Win7.

So if anyone has a good computer running an older version of DirectX (unlike those that come installed on WinVista and Win7), a disc or ISO of PS2 SH games, then perhaps they would be able to rip stuff. I've pretty much given up on ripping anything that was not released on PC (have only SH2, SH3,Sh4, SHH; slight exception for SH1 because it's old and small files, and parts of SHSM, which was a nightmare to rip even that much because no computer I have can handle the emulator plus the dumping).

Silent Hill Book of Memories (Vita)
Nothing known about hacking Vita games yet.

Silent Hill Downpour
Unless it comes out on PC, I probably won't know how to do this one either.

Hey I notice the link to TIMveiwer is dead... at least for me. Do you still have it? or is there another link? Just curious 'cause I would love to give the texture switching thing a shot see if I can get it to work (not that I could. lol).

Thanks for that info, I will look for it. I wasn't able to find it today, but I'm sure I must have it on a disc somewhere, and I'll upload it when I find it.

SH Games Modding FAQ

Post by JenniferCarroll on Sat Sep 04, 2010 10:23 pm

SWEEEET! Thanks. :) i've been wondering about that for a while... I tried googling it but all I got was TEAMviewer...whatever that is. I did however find a forum where someone talks about successfully using it to replace textures in a game. I didn't really understand it that well. I believe it's a matter of only using the palette given in the game or a limited paletter of colors and converting back to a .tim file or whatever the games native format is. Not sure though... I'm not a mod expert. lol :P http://forums.ngemu.com/misc-psx-discussion/99839-psx-games-modding-texture-editing.html They even have photos of having done it to Tekken. I dunno.. You could check it out and see if you like. :)

Cool. I found it on a disc:

Yeah, that makes sense about the palette though. Could be interesting.

Yeah, I still haven't tried again. But I mean that the palette thing is probably why it didn't work for me before.

If it says "ok" it should be in the fame. The preview won't refresh until you preview another skin and go back to the one you just changed.

Another notable program i will be doing some messing with is one called, OPTPIX Imagestudio, it handles ps1 textures, ps2 textures, it can convert back n forth, let you do editing to .tim files directly and keep them in tim format, im thinking i might be able to get custom textures in game this way by hand with a hex editor

Also using TimViewer, you can use the script option to Reinsert modified textures backinside the .bin, i dont see a clear way to get the modified .bin back into the disc though
