A historic day in Silent Hill history, as on this very day five years ago(April 21st, 2006) was the release of as we now know it to be the 1st SILENT HILL movie nationwide in US theaters...

HAPPY 5th ANNIVERSARY Silent Hill movie!

You SUCKED. :P

So, what are your experiences with the first movie and opening day? Were you excited, nervous perhaps? Did you have high or low expectations, did you think the movie met or possibly even exceeded them? Or did it not even come CLOSE?! Did you hate it upon your viewing, and actually hate yourself for having been exposed to such vileness?

I offer you this thread to expound upon your thoughts and feelings below.................GO!

Pretty good by film adaptation standards (it wasn't by Uwe Boll, that prick's got his own article on TV Tropes for gods sake), decent by general film standards. Just my opinion of course.

I didn't get to see it opening day, but I saw it opening week.
I also saw it a month later at the $3.00 theater. :D

I remember having a nerdgasm when that familiar music played for a few seconds. It just gave me goosebumps.

I have my reservations about the movie, but the adrenaline rush I got from seeing SH in a theater was worth the unexpected plot. Go ahead an flame me, but it was even pretty cool seeing pyr*cough*ead in live action, too.

It looks like things are getting too spicy for the pepper.

Good idea, in retrospect.

To ME, that was the first sign of trouble for this movie. It goes wrong right from the start with the studio logo opening at the beginning.

Ya know what? You're completely correct. That's the one and only logical, sane and convincing argument to put him in the movie for. UNfortunately, they did not execute it properly at all. I hope to compose a pic and have it posted here later today that may illustrate this matter more clearly...

Didn't find out about it until early last year. Some help that is.

Definitely, man.
I don't get mad; I get even - which isn't normal, for someone as odd as me.

I kinda took that as the studio laying claim and marking their territory. Like "yeah. This is OUR Silent Hill, bitches!" :D
Probably not what they intended, but it helps justify a little more imo.

But yeah, they definitely didn't stick true the red pyramid thing. They made him look more bad ass and scary instead of having much substance. Now it's looking like he might be a LSAP employee in the sequel, so that would be acceptable.

It looks like things are getting too spicy for the pepper.

WHY would you even bother to use like merely 10sec of the main theme and just cut it OFF like that? It's badly done, badly edited and a poor choice in the first place.A grave insult to Akira Yamaoka and to the theme of the first game.

If by 'bad ass' you mean 'GAY', and by 'scary' you mean 'CLICHE'.........well, then you're right on the money.

They buffed him up, took off his (shirt?) and made the helmet more industrial "hard core" looking. That's all I meant. No need to insult homosexuals. ???
Oh, well. That's the great thing about Silent Hill. Everyone takes from it what they will.

Well, as I said on HD, I saw it with my grandmother who is deceased now. I saw PH and yelled 'omg' X 3. So yeah.

I think you just answered your own question there... :?

I mean no offense to the gay & lesbian community, when I use that term it's meant to be taken more as 'fucking STOO-pid!' Haven't you ever seen the SOUTH PARK episode with the obnoxious bikers and their definition of the word "faggot"? Look it up sometime.

Alright, I'll put it another way - they Joel Schumacher'd him up! And this movie is like the BATMAN & ROBIN of video game adaptations for me. :|

True. I realize I'm in the great minority in my opinionses(even though it shouldn't be that way)...

No hostility. I'm just clarifying my use of that term, it's not my intent to derogatorily insult ANYone's sexual preference or lifestyle. I mean, how 'bout all those people that call TWILIGHT 'gay'?

Just throwin' some numbers out for ya...

SILENT HILL had a production budget of $50 million.

It opened at No. 1 the Box Office movie weekend of April 21, 2006. Only new movies it was up against were THE SENTINEL(3rd) and AMERICAN DREAMZ(9th). Other movies in the Top 5 for that weekend were SCARY MOVIE 4(2nd), ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN(4th) and THE WILD(5th).

Opening Weekend Gross(US): $20.1 million
Total Domestic(US) Gross: $46.3 million
Total Worldwide Gross: $97.6 million

http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2006/SHILL.php

The film was released domestically on DVD in the US on August 22, 2006 and took in another $22.1 million in sales. No idea if that includes the Blu-ray or not.

It is in the TOP 10 Box Office of video game film adaptations(1980 - now) in place at No. 9, right behind RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION which grossed $50 million total domestically.

*round of applause*

Daaaaaang.
I never knew it did so well. I was sure any of the REs could've easily blown it out of the water.

Advertising fucking works. :D

Actually I'm surprised to see it's that low on the TOP 10 video game adaptions of all-time Box Office list. I suppose the TOMB RAIDER and RESIDENT EVIL movies are all the ones above it, and possibly PRINCE OF PERSIA.

Tried looking up the Japanese release BO numbers, it opened on July 8th over there, but failed to find anything substantial. I do know that it didn't perform all too well. If I recall it opened in like 8th or 9th place, LOL.

I don't even know why RE did that well, or at least the movies after RE1.

Indeed - especially that laser scene in the first film. That cracked me up. The Queen is racist!
Although, Degeneration was pretty damn good (slightly too short, though, for my likin').

Reception. The numbers don't lie...

Rotten Tomatoes rates SILENT HILL at a whopping 29%, while metacric similarly has it at 30/100.

Chicago Sun-Times: (38/100)
The New York Times: (10/100)
San Francisco Chronicle: (0/100)

OUCH!

But correct. ;)

I was excited that the movie was made, didn't go watch it in the theaters, rented the movie for free from my job at a rental store. Not a bad movie, great for a video game movie (considering Uwe Boll is still allowed to live), and better than the same old shit that 'hollywood' rewrites and re-releases year after year after year. I'd have liked to have had John Carpenter direct the movie but that wasn't going to happen. Rehashing characters, altering character's personalities, and omitting others seems to have made most fans quite irate. I saw Super Mario Bros when it came out so I've seen some craptacular video game movies and that makes me be more generous in Silent Hill's case.
No matter wherever you go, or whatever you do, I'll be in the closet of your mind, squatting naked and aroused.

God....really doesn't seem like it's been five years. Time is just flying by these days. As for Uwe Boll he's currently making In the Name of the King 2.

LOL.
