The Negatives of Silent Hill Homecoming

Post by Lobsel Vith on Sun Jun 22, 2008 1:21 am

I think one of my biggest problems with this game is that they seem to be trying to make it too much like Silent Hill 2, and I worry that it's because they might be thinking, "Well hey, SH2 was the fan favorite, so let's make SHH just like SH2 and this game will be a favorite too!"

I'm worried that they don't realize that this isn't the case.

Digressions are one thing--and are typically acceptable, esp. in this case because it still pertained to what's being discussed in this thread--but going off on a stupid tangent about how delicious pastries are is just dumb and annoying.

The only time moderators seem to get involved is when members are disagreeing w/ them--and that's just bad form.

The sections individual to each specific entry in the series? No, actually I don't browse those sections frequently. I don't find any need to discuss the games I've already played a billion times. Prod me anytime if you think a thread needs moderating.

Regarding my clearing of the "digression"... I cleared it because it was turning the thread into a place of argument over what artistic rights Double Helix have (or should have) with Homecoming's plot. Suggesting I got involved because I disagreed with someone is false. I cleared both sides of the argument, including two of my own posts. And I cleared the argument after your post, which I actually found myself agreeing with. I agreed with points made by both sides, in fact. I cleared the posts because this thread is not a place to argue over or even maturely discuss what Double Helix should be allowed to do with the overarching plot of the series. It's a thread for discussing qualities of Homecoming that have been revealed to us and that we personally dislike.

If you'd like, however, I can restore the quarantined posts as a thread that is actually about what Double Helix should or should not be allowed to do to the plot of the series.

Here's another thing that bugged the crap out of me. In the video between Alex and Elle it looks like Alex is either wearing a bright white mouth guard, or he's using ultra glow paint on his teeth.

Of all the things graphic wise, it just looks stupid and I hope they fix that. Also the glitch where Elle just slides onto the chair from midair needs to be fixed.

It says that the game is still being developed and they could stand to fix a few things. Which they have plenty of time to do.

I haven't read this whole thread, because it's three pages and I really can't muster the effort now. However, I will say this.

We haven't seen yet the Asphyxia monster in action, but by God if that isn't the most overdone monster designed yet in the series! I would expect it from some bio-terror based game, but not from Silent Hill. I still think it looks like the bottom portion is kissing the front one's rear.

I could see myself getting used to it, but if it wasn't for that extra body...

How is that going to help it in combat? It'll slow it down and make it vulnerable to Alex's attacks.

Asphyxia could be a really big boss monster.........or invincible........it seems like it is really resilient though, and the design is a bit complicated. xD

So far what we've seen of Homecoming isn't anything new, and that can be a problem. There are improvements, of course, such as creature dynamics or improved combat abilities, but it isn't something that can be said to give us a different kind of horror. Yamaoka promised that Homecoming will make use of "horror in daylight," but I have yet to see anything from them that shows us what that would be like. I'm hoping for something like Mulholland Drive.

Of course SH3 didn't bring much new either. It used a re-hash of ideas and story parts from 1 & 2.

I don't want to say that Homecoming is going to suck or anything like that, but so far it looks to be a montage of different games in the series. It tries to emulate the feel of Silent Hill 2, and it's taking a lot of imagery from the movie. Mind you, I don't believe those points make this game bad, but I'd like to see something that would define the horror that will be unique to Homecoming.

And, that's one of the problems that I have. For me, it's not about "Team Silent vs. American developers." It wouldn't be different if it was another Japanese developer that took on the project. At least with Team Silent, they tried to do different things with horror. Every game tried to give a different taste in horror. But, you know, with Double Helix, I keep on thinking that they are being held back from trying out something really different. Konami standing over their shoulders and telling what they can do, and what they can't, giving boundaries in how much they can exercise their freedom...

Oh, yeah...

MUFFINS AND CUPCAKES!!!

A total valid concern that I support. For all we know the influence of the movie, nurses, and hospital could all be something to do with Konami wanting another hit. I'm pretty positive the new team does not have 100% creative control over the product. Dear I say, Team Silent had more control.

I wouldn't say Silent Hill 3 didn't bring anything new. It was a different kind of horror compared to 1 and 2.

Death and silence were major themes in 1 and 2. In 3, however, death was given a "life" of its own: moving, bleeding; it was dynamic, and not static like the others.

Yes, the first time I played SH3 I was genuinely terrified, because I had never seen the whole "bleeding, moving, pulsating" walls before. That area of SH3 still scares the crap out of me.

That creeped me out, made me unconfortable, and made me whack nurses with the katana repeatedly. The church was even worse with the Black Closers and many other nasties.

However, this thread is about the bad parts of SH:H. You know what's bad? It costs $60 plus tax. >.<

Yeah same here. I got Sh3 and 4 when they first came out too. I don't mind spending money on items like that... Even if it turns out to suck.

I'd buy it and play it at my sister's house. Her boyfriend has an Xbox 360 and a PS3.

Anyone ever wish that Silent hill 4 ended with the 21 Sacs ending, Walter won, and the whole world was destroyed?

That's the feeling I get when I look at this game.

That was my favorite ending, and IMO, the only fitting end to the story.

I am only criticizing the non-essentials now. The game will be completely scrutinized when I play it firsthand.

#1 The Price

59.99 USD/CAD in North America for a video game is profoundly expensive. While this price tag is the suggested retail price on many PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 first release installments, consider Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4: The Room, and Silent Hill: Origins all were games released 10 USD less than the common suggested retail price.

#2 The Subtitle

The first time I heard "Silent Hill: Homecoming," I honestly thought it was a practical joke. It turned out this non-amusing joke was valid afterall. I cannot be too positive how the name "homecoming" fits this game, but if a deceitful, fallacious portrayal was the intent, they succeeded.

#3 The Onscreen Selections

Displaying the button selections is not only visually agitating, but also insulting to my aptitude. If this development team knew anything about the real Silent Hill, they would have discovered KCET had subtle methods to indicate something (head movements of the characters, for example). I do not take pleasure in big, bright text to showing up on the screen during game play and essentially declaring, "Hey moron that cannot learn button-control layouts, press this button now."

#4 The Cover Art

The old idiom, "a picture says a thousand words," holds true. Unfortunately, I not think of 999 ways to say "WTF!"

at #2: You do realize that the term "Homecoming" is used for soldiers who return from a war, right?

Good point. That did not occur to me, although, I still believe the word is not very accompanying of the Silent Hill series.

It fits for me. Alex is soldier returning from a war. Although, I guess I could see how some would think 'Homecoming' = 'Highschool Homecoming Dance'
