A Eulogy for P.T.

Post by jam6i on Thu May 21, 2015 3:27 pm

So sad. It's really shameful what Konami did. A disgrace to the world of gaming and art. The first time a game publisher worked to aggressively murder their own critically acclaimed project. It's a cultural crime.

And I, sadly, never got a PS4 while PT was up. I had to borrow from a friend to play it. Which means I'll never have my own copy unless I shell out on eBay for a console. I offered to buy my friend's PS4. They are holding onto it now with a death grip.

As Jim Sterling says "Fuck Konami."

Damn you beat me to it. Superbunnyhop is amazing.
He even uses the True theme from SH2. You trying to hurt me George?
Naw but this is a great video as usual from George. I've always wanted to talk about P.T. in some public form. I love the demo so much. It gives me hope. I wish I had a mind that could come up with this stuff.

P.T. is what happens when a great vision is combined with a lot of money and technology, and it is wow. I doubt if the full game came out anyone could look at it and doubt the potential of games as an art form. It's actually why I'm here. I thought maybe I could find a well of more things like P.T. in the Silent Hill series. I didn't, I found something different, but I can't say I'm disappointed.
This brings up some questions though. I think the most powerful games are postmodern or at least anti-realist and strangely structured. They focus on intellectual and emotional value more than anything else. It seems to me that games have a bit of trouble reaching the high ground without abandoning realism in a way that the other mediums don't.

Ya, the video really mirrors my own thoughts on PT. Which I have posted in the past.

What has happened to it is really unprecedented. It disappeared as surprisingly as it appeared.

Maybe Lisa is a representation of Konami in PT. As they both invite us in and then they both send us to Silent Hill purgatory....

A Eulogy for P.T.

George really nailed it. Silent Hills would attract Silent Hill fans, horror fans, Guillermo Del Toro fans, Hideo Kojima fans, Walking dead fans....it would probably even attract fans of other horror IPs like Resident Evil who also want a good horror game.

Regardless of how you feel about a SH game touching those demographics, it's hard to deny this game would have penetrated many different demographics across multiple forms of entertainment (cinema, television and gaming). Konami would have broken so many records with this game based on the huge populations involved in those demographics.

I don't care what their "focus for the future" for mobile is...if they wanted one last hurrah, a product that would earn them many millions, they would have continued this project. It was one hell of a business blunder. They cancelled a guaranteed success for shovelware and casinos.

It is my opinion that the cancellation of Silent Hills has cost them more (both financially and socially) over if they had just finished it in the first place. Even more so, all that money they spent on P.T. and everything surrounding it was just money flushed down the drain.

The only loser in this entire debacle is Konami. Everyone else will eventually find a way to continue what they wanted to do without Konami. And Konami will look at all the talent they have squandered over the years and wish they hadnt done what they did, as their precious mobile market implodes under the weight of oversaturation.

This is why we know Konami has decided to kill and bury PT and Silent Hills as fast as possible. As they have completely shifted the business model and look at their AAA game division as a loss....

There is no other reason for such a drastic swing .....

Once they made the decision all it did was make them look like they were cutting their noses off to spite their face. Now we do not know if this is true.

The only other reason for such drastic measures is that they may think they are missing the boat in the mobile market.

Or maybe it's a combination of both.

And for the record I do not think Kojima did anything to contribute to this decision .....

Other than make great games and demos for this company........:coffee:

Considering the new CEO's aim for mobile, I think any part that Kojima would have played was financial. I could be wrong, but I believe this Hideki Hayakawa guy was installed after P.T. and Silent Hills dropped. Meaning he was probably against the project 100%.

"You budget is too high".
"Why was P.T. free?"
"I want micro transactions and paywalls in Silent Hill."

Kojima's part would have been simply he wanted the money for a quality product that this douche Hayakawa didn't want to give.

Image

This guy is the guy who killed Silent Hills and murdered P.T. most likely over anyone else. This is the guy, after all, who states that the new company goal is to push mobile practices onto console IPs.

(I don't call someone a douche unless they've done something to truly deserve it. And whoever is the person who gave the go head to cancel Silent Hills and erase P.T. from history is a grade-A certified douche. And if that person is in fact Hayakawa....douche.)

I wonder what will happen to the Fox Engine. I mean, if Konami is done with AAA games. Will it become another casualty of this move to mobile....

This eulogy might need to include that engine as well....

Sad to say I told you so, but I told ya we were dealing with drunk Miyagi level decisions here. My own words to P.T. in my personal message.

^^^Why do I feel a little bit of anger when I was watching that?.....So much potential....look at how the series itself gave you different storylines and characters for each outing (referring to the last few seconds of the vid)....and then to cancel SH's itself...I can't believe how stunning those visuals was in P.T.

Every time I see a clip a P.T. I just want to smack the s**t outta Konami....:coffee:.... :chainsaw:

Your welcome. I hope it was a good farewell to Silent Hills.

FYI, if you like it I'd recommend downloading it, on the chance Konami decides they don't like it and try to take it down (although I don't think there's much they can do, I also said the same thing about fan art until Konami had the audacity to issue copyright on fan art).

Funnily enough though, there was only one ContentID match on the video, and it was from Konami. Sure, the actual Silent Hills trailer in full and uninterrupted didn't trigger anything, but the clip of Del Toro at the beginning talking in front of two computers? KONAMI OWNS THAT SHIT AND THEY WILL MONETIZE IT BECAUSE DEL TORO BELONGS TO KONAMI.

Not lying. The only thing Konami claimed was Del Toro talking.

I just saw the videos. Beautiful this last one! You know what I think? The huge success of the fine work of P.T. it was just the factor that blew up everything. P.T. is a unequivocal proof that Kojima, with Del Toro and Norman, was producing a AAA+ game when the plan was already defined and the focus should be mobile games and gambling machines. Also, Kojima was obviously already out of MGSV that was in final stages of development, he was totally focused on Silent Hill and MGS for him was in the past, because you can't make a game like P.T. without being completely inside the project. Kojima was clearly out of control and was dismissed by a boss of a company taken by mediocrity, arrogance and greed.

But, you know what? I'm sad Silent Hill is over, but I have a consolation, a great one: these guys will be dead soon, but P.T. will live longer, maybe forever.

I recently reformatted one of my old PS4 hard drives and backed up my PS4 with it. To keep P.T. safe.

Image

To me P.T. was everything Kojima would have given us ( which we got for free )

Image

And pulling it is everything Konami is. Because Konami is Konami ....

Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness.

And then we have the Konami PR disaster .... sooo ...... ya .....

Yeah...Konami sucks ass...at the very least they could have left P.T. on the servers. SH's cancelled? ok at least let everybody else enjoy what could have been....that stunt they pulled with the servers and wiping it clean was a bi**ch ass move.... :skeptical:

P.T. | Remember ,Never Forget, Never Forgive |

SHN does a walkthrough of PT, and we never see Lisa, except in the hallway where the light goes out.

That is the first time a have seen a walkthrough where Lisa never jump scares you .....

I had to stop watching this at the "2:40" (time mark), because...

1 - Started showing clips of SH4 (Spoiling), never finish it yet!

2 - Started showing clips of Pan's Labyrinth! WTH, big guy created this? This movie is sitting
to the left of me right now. It's been in the same spot for years, since I bought it (unopened).

This "Eulogy" video is good, but I can't finish watching now!
I lost my head again, would you cry for me?
