PT walkthrough, puzzle solutions, and story

SPOILERS.

I've played through P.T. quite a few times now. I can speed right through everything except the ending, which is still something of a mystery to me. Here's how it seems to work, and here is my crappy map of the hallway:
Image
(Click for larger.)
The little red dots indicate the location of the photo fragments, except the one that's hidden in the menu. I will add more things to this page and clarify some things shortly, including adding pics of all the photo fragment locations.

First Part

Run through the hallways until the end door locks and you have to turn around and go the other way. There will be a noise from the bathroom door. The door at the end of the hallway should now unlock. Go through and return to the bathroom door.

Now the door is open just a crack. You can use R3 (pressing the right thumbstick) to zoom in until you see a ghost and the door slams. The exit door at the end of the hall should be open now. Go through again. Now pass the bathroom door again, and the lights should go out. Continue through the exit door once more (you're gonna get sick of that, I know...).
Image

To the bathroom!

When you gotta go, you gotta go, as they say. The bathroom door should be wide open now. Go inside. It's dark, but there is a flashlight flickering on the floor. Use R3 to zoom in and pick it up. Now you can look around. Of particular interest is the fetus in the sink. You also need to look in the mirror a bit. The door should start to open. Go back out and go through the exit door again.
Image

Collect the photo pieces

It seems like you can do this at various times, so I'm just going to mention it right here. I tend to do it as soon as I think of doing it. You might have noticed a frame in the area with the digital clock. You have to collect the pieces of this photo to complete it. They will automatically appear in the frame when you pick them up (do this by zooming with R3).
Image

Deface the portrait

There is a portrait past the bathroom, in the entrance area, with a big blue "x" on it. Use R3 to zoom and "x" to gouge out an eye. The exit should now unlock.
Image
Calling from where?

Now you'll see a hanging fridge in the entrance door area, where you found the portrait before. Look at the wall to the right of the entrance door for a message. "I hear them calling from..." You now have to complete the sentence. Go through the whole area again. If you go back and forth between there and the telephone (the desk with the teddy bear on the floor next to it), you'll now see the word "Hello" on the wall. The letters move back and forth between these two scrawled messages on the wall; you have to keep going back and forth until the entrance message says "I hear them calling from hell."
Image

Red hallways

I'm tempted to call this an Otherworld hallway. There is a lot of red light, and moving eyeballs on all the paintings. You need to keep running through again and again for a while, until you see a little round peephole where one of the paintings used to be. This will allow you to peer into the bathroom. You don't see much, but there is some audio. Listen to the whole thing, until it won't let you look through the hole anymore. Now a message should appear above the peephole. Now you are able to leave the red hallways. Keep going.
Image

Glitchy part

The halls are lit normally again now, but the picture occasionally glitches out and has lines on it like you're watching a crappy old VHS tape. Keep going back and forth until this area ends automatically. It will show you one of several colored screens with some text in various languages:
ImageImageImage

I'm heading there now.

This game is purely fictitious. It cannot harm you in any way, shape, or form.

Knowing you, I was sure yo'd notice this game and play it. I will never - can never - forget that day 20 years ago. I have something to tell you. Contact me. -J.

These are what I've gotten so far. Not sure how many there are yet. I will edit this if I get more.
Image

Final part

-wait for clock to chime at midnight. This is always necessary. It takes a
little bit, so you can just stand there and hang out until it happens.
-walk about 10 steps and listen for the baby's laugh
-follow the haunting sounds to the phone, radio, or bathroom mirror
-talking into the headset seems to help trigger the hauntings, but people have
suggested it helps to talk to the phone, baby, and radio.
-After you hear the second giggle, do NOTHING.
Don't touch anything until you hear a third giggle, the controller should
vibrate, then the phone should ring.

Once this happens and the phone rings, a voice will say, “You have been
chosen.” The trailer will start and then show the credits.

Story

Some of the story-related texts in the game:

The day of the crime, the father went to the trunk of his car, retrieved the rifle, and shot his wife as she was cleaning up the kitchen after lunch.
When his ten-year-old son came to investigate the commotion, the father shot him, too.
His six-year-old daughter has the good sense to hide in the bathroom, but reports suggest he lured her out by telling her it was just a game.
The girl was found shot in the chest from point-blank range.
The mother, who he shot int he stomach, was pregnant at the time.
Police arriving on-scene after neighbors called 911 found the father in his car, listening to the radio.
Several days before the murders, neighbors say they heard the father repeating a sequence of numbers in a loud voice. They said it was like he was chanting some strange spell. After killing his family, the father hung himself with a garden hose they had in the garage.
There was another family shot to death in the same state last month, and in December last year.
A man used a rifle and a meat cleaver to murder his entire family.
In each case, the perpetrators were fathers.
State police say this string of domestic homicides appears unrelated, though it could be part of a larger trend, such as employment, childcare, and other social issues facing the average family.

The story of the murders from the radio, and hinting that other murders may be related or had inspired this one, also that it may be related to economic reasons. The presence of the fetus in the sink is likely related to the mother's unborn child.

204863

Look behind you.
I said, look behind you.
You can't trust the tap water.
Don't touch that dial now, we're just getting started.

Radio audio. The number refers to Kojima's birthday. Is it something in the water? ^_^

Now's the time for action.
Our society is rotten to the core.
I'm talking to all the fine, upstanding folks got their welfare cut, got their jobs pulled out from under 'em.
Yeah, you! You know what to do!
Now's the time! Do it!

This is the audio when you look through the peephole. It may be referring to the murders and the reasons behind the murders, again, suggesting economic reasons.
Image
The fridge also seems to suggest somebody dead is in there.

Dad was such a drag.
Every day he'd eat the same kind of food, dress the same,
sit in front of the same kind of games.
Yeah, he was just that kind of guy.
But then one day, he goes and kills us all!
He couldn't even be original about the way he did it.
I'm not complaining... I was dying of boredom anyway.
But guess what? I will be coming back,
and I'm bringing my new toys with me.

Ending text, from the main character's POV.
References/Similarities to other SH games

-Lisa: "Forgive me Lisa, there's a monster inside of me." Probably a reference to Lisa Garland.
-Bathroom hole: the hole in the bathroom is reminiscent of the SH4 bathroom hole, and it even functions as a peephole (from the other side).
-SH4: Henry is stuck in his haunted apartment in SH4, and the apartment parts are in first person POV. P.T.'s main character is stuck in a haunted apartment, and it's in first person POV.
-The 3 circles loading icon looks like the 3 circles inside the Halo of the Sun.
-The radio.

It feels so good to have new maps in the SH lore. I obsess over the maps. I dunno why I love em so much. I love how the background is given an old school feel to it, all wrinkled and stuff. Really nice.

References:

The "......from hell" part where you have to transfer the letters looks a lot like this from Woodside Apartments:

Image

The first time you see "Lisa" standing in the foyer area is exactly like the first time you see Pyramid Head in SH2. You can't approach him...and you've never seen him before so you don't know what it is.

Image

And the red tinted hallways remind me of the Borley mansion's hallways:

Image

And the fetus in the sink is, obviously, like SH3's scene

Image

And the rotating eyeballs remind me of Eileen's head

Image

And the bloody refrigerator reminds me of the cat in the fridge (both in the apartment level as well as room 302's cat haunting)

Image

The idea of "looping" into the same hallway if you don't do something correctly is similar to the sequence in Downpour's otherworld Monastery where you have to traverse a sequence of three staircases in the correct order, or else you're doomed to repeat it forever (I couldn't find a single image of this sequence online, so here's an image from the looping stairs in the pitstop)

Image

P.T. Is just stuffed with all kinds of little things.

Same, but it's still worth mentioning the sh3 fetus, I think. ^_^

That's awesome dude! Nice job!

Thanks, still needs much work though. ^_^ Currently transferring my video files to a flash drive so I can edit on the computer.

Can anyone read the rest of the messages that come up when you pick up a photo fragment (PT)? I can only read the German ones, something about "I thought I heard a telephone" and "consciousness swimming through fog." Some others look like maybe Italian, maybe something about waiting and something about putting an index finger on my hand? I thought maybe these could be clues for the end puzzle or something.

I remember one of the messages was in Spanish, when translated, it said "So much, that he shivered" or something like that. It was pretty weird.

Excellent post, however.

Here are some of the messages:

ITALIAN:
Non me mossi più nell'attesa inerte (I didn't move anymore during the waiting)
Poi il suo indice scivolò sulla mia mano (Then his finger slipped on my hand)

GERMAN:
Und durch Nebel schwindenden Bewusstseins (And through the mist of fading consciousness)
Glaubte ich ein telefon zu hören (I believed, I heard a phone)

PORTUGUESE:
Sussurrei seu nome (I whispered your name)
Mas o vento da noite levou sua voz embora (But the wind of the night took your voice away)

JAPANESE:
つめたい手でした (It was a cold hand)
からだがふるえました (Body was trembling)

ENGLISH:
I waited for it to pass
Never moving a step, his hand in mine

Also, here is another glitchy message:
REVEAL SPOILER

True, true, but who knows if they even had SH games in mind when they made some of those things. I mean, the red lights and twitchy eyes in the photographs might remind us of some things from the games, but we don't know if they had those SH moments in mind when they made that.

So I just got around to starting this today and beat it about a half hour ago. That last part was really frustrating. I was using the first method of IGN's guide here: http://www.ign.com/wikis/silent-hills/P ... alkthrough

After the 1st laugh I hid on the other side of the bathroom wall next to the phone until I heard crying and then ran into the bathroom to catch Lisa in the mirror like the guide says to. I did this three times but all that would happen is Lisa would disappear from the mirror and there would be no laugh. I was getting ready to do it again but as I was standing there waiting for the cries to start again I heard the 2nd laugh. When it happened I was standing still and I didn't even have the controller in my hands. I picked it up and it started vibrating and then I heard the 3rd laugh and the phone rang. Weird.

Another similarity that some may be overlooking (because it's been labelled a cheap jumpscare) is the first encounter with Lisa where she attacks you near the beginning of the "game".

This is a fake death sequence that occurs at the beginning of the game.

SH1 had it in the alleyway.
SH3 had it at the amusement park.
SH4 had it at the beginning (when you were actually Joseph).
Homecoming also had it with the Pyramid Head thing, but let's not talk about that!

Fakeouts are pretty common. Even Downpour had the dream-sequence.

-

And people have noticed the two bugs at the beginning, when you wake up, seem to be having sex or whatever (they are stuck together). I think this could reference the relationship between Lisa and our unnamed protagonist. They are always linked together because of events, and neither can escape the other. Both are trapped forever in this infinitely looping hallway (the scene of the crime).

Here's another one:

If you have played P.T. aka the Silent Hills demo, you may want to check out this creepy message.

If you pause P.T. and wait for a small amount of time, a very creepy and distorted message will play. I decided to take the audio and reverse it and found that the message is in a foreign language.

Unfortunately I personally can not decipher the message. I asked a couple of our Spanish speaking editors and the following is what they got out of the message.

Tanto que tuvo, el Temblaba

When the message is translated to English it says.

So much he had, he shivered.
(Or something like that)

From the comments:
There's quite a few of these that crop up. I managed to catch one that said "Su toce frio como el marmol." It means "her touch, cold like marble".

~~~~
I posted this here: viewtopic.php?p=7654193#p7654193
"We share an instant of private darkness"
Isn't it kind of illogical? (It could be a hint about alternate selves/timelines/dimensions/whatever)
~~~~
Here's another strange one:
204863 is anagram year in Japanese

In Japanese, they like to attribute syllables from the language to numbers (ie for phone numbers on commercials etc.)

Not to mention a LOT of Japanese horror games and movies have mysterious numbers that translate into syllables.

Here's some of the most common attributions to the numbers:

2 = fu ni tsu
0 = o n to
4 = shi yo
8 = ha ba pa ya
6 = ro mu
3 = mi sa san

fu o yo ba ro mi

o fu ro ba mi yo

ofuroba miyo

ofuroba = the bathtub
miyo = older Japanese for "Look at" (commanding)

(for Japanese learners: "miro" and "miyou" are modern ways of saying it, but "miyo" (without the u) is the equivalent of modern "miro" in old Japanese)

"Look at the Bathtub"

On fungo's playthrough he caught a voice talking in reverse while he was staring at the phone waiting for the cry and reversed it.

He says it sounds like "I walked 'til I stood one piece before Jack".

But I think it sounds more like "I walked til' I stood one pace before Jack".

Saw it here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/827527-p ... /793537446
Image

As I was walking past the bathroom, the screen getting more messed up, I heard a man continually repeat the numbers "204863" with a slight pause before the "63" part....prob for dramatic effect.

Anyway, I paused the game and googled the numbers and stumbled onto this thread. Since all this happened after walking past the bathroom, I figured it made sense, so I walked into the dark bathroom and zoomed into the bathtub just staring into it for a good 5-10 seconds. What happened next, I can't find any reference on any other website.

So the screen just goes black, and text appears in white in various different languages that says something along the lines of "discovered this bug so close to the date".... not sure what that means. It went by so fast, I don't recall exactly what it said, but once the screen disappeared, I wake up again in the room where you start. I walk through the doors and my flashlight is now green, the room dark. I find my way back to the end of the hallway, go down the stairs, go through the doors, and the room is once again lit properly. I don't know if I ended up at the beginning again or not, but the clock is now back to 23:59 and no longer 0:00.

Also note, as I was walking through the black hallway with the green flashlight, I heard the clock strike midnight with various gongs.

Had to turn it off at that point.

So / Such, that everything trembled him.

So who's going to freak out if Silent Hills turns out to be a multiplayer game and players can cross into each other's delusion?

You aren't the only you because other players are you also. Each with their own specific visions and delusions.

Fox Engine allows people to flat out invade each other's games. You can do that in MGS5.

Final puzzle solved!

It's quite incredible. And absolutely freaking insane how complex the solution was to find out how to trigger the laugh.

People are saying it consistently works.

Of course, this doesn't mean it's the only solution. People have beaten P.T. without doing what's explained in the video.

I wouldn't mind if it were handled correctly. Though I'd laugh at all the fanboys who try to claim it's a "genius" feature, when other games have already implemented such mechanics. The majority of the fanbase would throw fits, even though there would undoubtedly be a simple option to disable people from joining/invading you.

There's already another game coming up which is basically a psychological thriller/horror FPS where other players will be able to persistently exist in your single-player-esque narrative-driven game instance, and it won't be immediately obvious who they are or what form they've taken.

edit: That vid was pretty well-done. However, I hope the actual game is filled to the brim with incredibly obtuse puzzles like that. If that much effort is put into all the other areas of the game however, that will be fun. The theory threads will be overbearing though, I can already tell.

So I think PT represents Silent Hill deconstructed. The puzzles, sounds, visuals, locations, and atmosphere are Silent Hill's core without any of the gimmicks attached. No game HUDS or status screens or scratchy maps or dramatic music or arrows pointing at stuff to pick up.

It's just you in the world. It's a vision closer to what the characters themselves experience, rather having it filtered through a video game interface.

I do hope they use this mechanic for some building interiors, but not all of them. Keep us guessing as to when we go to 'oppressive cam'.

Does anyone else but me consider the red hallway sequence to be this game's version of the Otherworld? A gradual subtle change like Sh2 had, which I miss.
