HD Collection PS3 Review is up @ Cheap Boss Attack.

Post by CheapBossAttack on Sun Mar 25, 2012 12:05 am

Another (probably annoying) plug, but I know there are a lot of mixed emotions about the HD Collection for Silent Hill, especially the PS3 version. If anyone disagrees or wants to debate the score, feel free to drop a comment on the blog or here. I try to check the forums as often as possible but my group and I are trying hard to complete all Silent Hill titles by the end of March to celebrate Silent Hill Month =D.

I recommend reading this thread, and checking elsewhere around this forum and other parts of the net where the issues in these new ports have been discussed, and edit your review accordingly.

I've done plenty of reading on it, but the review was my own personal experience with the collection. Is there something in particular you disagree with or feel needs correcting?

Specifically, this line from your review is patently false:

Graphically, Konami did a bang up job with the HD Collection for Silent Hill just like they did with Metal Gear Solid’s entry.

Well the part about MGS is true, but the same can't rightly be said for Silent Hill. The examples in the two links you included are just the tip of the iceberg. Unlike the MGS HD Collection, these ports are littered with graphical downgrades. You can find some other examples in the screenshot comparisons I posted in this thread, and plenty more throughout the games.

I also do not understand why Silent Hill 4 was not included in the collection...very underrated from the others imo, SH4 being my favorite of all the SH games. I have a PS3, so the first game I got off of PSN.

I look forward to trying the collection out for myself, it sucks that there are lag issues with the PS3 version, though. I also don't understand why there are problems, even with a 5 month push back...and I do see this as a sloppy job from konami, for being one of their landmark series, they should of put more time and respect into remaking the games, but oh well.

I said they did a great job with the graphics.. which I still think they are great, even looking at screen shots. Regardless of them possibly not staying true to the originals, I can honestly turn on both Silent Hill 2 and 3 and feel that both of them ended up looking great in HD.

Graphics for me aren't the only reason I play a game. If it was, I would have loved Crysis 2 a whole lot more than I did. I bought the HD Collection because I loved SH2 and 3 back on the PS2. I reviewed it based on my enjoyment with the entire collection as a whole. My review is just my personal opinion of the game and I don't feel certain technical downgrades should dock the score too much when both games are fantastic on their own.

What is with your "possibly not staying true to the originals" here? Please, come to terms with the fact that graphical effects from the original SH2 and SH3 have been simplified and outright removed from these new ports, while the MGS HD Collection suffers no such graphical downgrades.

Looking at screen shots and playing the games are two completely different things. Yes, I agree that toning down the fog in SH2 was a terrible idea since it shows off parts of the game that were originally incomplete, and yes I think that was a stupid idea on their part. There are various other parts of both games that were changed to the remastering that might not stay true to the original in a graphical standpoint, but does that mean that the overall graphical presentation of both SH2 and SH3 are terrible? Not in my opinion. I can read forum posts and look at side-by-side screenshots all day long and see your point in the argument, but the bottom line is that when I put in the game and play through both of them completely, at the end of the day I'm fine with the product. Sure, I'll squirm when I see the rowboat scene and how awful it turned out thanks to the fog not hiding the textures like it did before, but that's roughly 2 minutes of a 7 hour game. I'm not going to complain that certain textures are changed or "simplified" because that isn't taking away from the storyline or how the game plays which are the most important things for me. It's just my point of view and I'm okay knowing that you think it's incorrect.

I've not been attempting to debate your point of view here. I take no issue with you're enjoying the games despite how much has been botched in them both graphically and otherwise, and rather I consider it a testate to how great the games are. My issue is with the flagrant inaccuracy in your comparison of the handling of the graphics for these new ports Silent Hill to that of Metal Gear Solid, as I explained above.

I suppose I see your point in comparing it to the MGS HD Collection. In my review I was trying to convey that I was just as happy with the graphical outcome of both games, mentioning MGS simply because it was also from Konami, rather than saying that both were given the same TLC with the finished product. Putting the two collections side-by-side in terms of overall quality isn't fair and claiming that the same amount of care went in to both isn't a correct statement.. but I was just as happy with the Silent Hill HD Collection graphically as I was with MGS. Does that make sense?

I understand what you meant to suggest, but I still take issue with what your review actually says.
