Taking over creature duties on next year's Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is Paul Jones, special makeup FX artist on The Thing, Resident Evil: Afterlife, the upcoming Resident Evil: Retribution and many, many other films. Shock spoke to Jones recently and got the exclusive lowdown on what we can expect creature FX-wise in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, directed by Michael J. Bassett. It turns out, the next chapter in the series - based on the video game series - will balance the old with the new, giving fans some of their favorite characters.
"There is an element for the first movie that Patrick [Tatopoulos] did that we have to be loyal to," Jones told us. "The Red Pyramid is back, we essentially rebuilt the Red Pyramid from the ground up. Aesthetically, it looks the same. But it's a whole new build. The nurses are brand new, we ended up redoing everything that Patrick did and they're redoing all of the costumes. We had to. They wanted all of the stuff from the previous movie, but that was six years ago and that stuff is rotten now, so we re-did all of that."
Jones previously worked with Bassett on 2009's Soloman Kane and he said that the director wanted to put a distinctive stamp on Revelation. "For Michael, this is more of a horror movie than an art film, so he wanted a lot more stuff for this movie. One character - he had sketches done, a full body study and then two sketches of the head. He handed those sketches to me and me and my concept guy, Martin Mercer, ran with that and essentially redesigned the entire creature, but it still had that aesthetic Michael wanted. This is one of the new characters I'm talking about. We have four new characters completely designed by me."
Silent Hill: Revelation 3D currently does not have a release date, however, as we learned from producer Don Carmody, you might expect to see it in theaters late-spring or sometime in the fall.
Does anyone know if this is the same guy who designed the Janitor from the first movie? I really liked that monster design.
I hope the Closers at least make an appearance though.
