Silent Hill 1 3D Tile Map

Create 3d models and environments with tiles. Typically tiles are used from 2d tilemaps to construct flat scenes, but Crocotile 3d adds another dimension. Watch the example video to see how fast and easy the process is.

*Draw and Edit modes to easily add/remove/edit tiles in 3d space.
*Perspective & Orthographic projection.
*Export to .obj and use your creations in other programs or in your game development.
*Modify UVs on tiles, adjust tileset sizes.
*Paint tools for creating/modifying your tilesets.
*Rotate, flip, mirror, reverse faces, verts and UVs.
*Split/cut tiles.
*Copy/paste tiles.
*Group tiles into objects/prefabs.
*Undo/redo any changes.
More!

Someone mentioned here about this program called Crocotile 3D a long ago, and i saw a few videos about it. I was amazed how easy you can build a 3D environment using a simple image texture, so i decided to give it a try using the SH1 textures ripped from the game disc.

As you know, almost every texture of SH1 is made by 256x256 pixels, and each texture is composed with 64 quads (squares) each square corresponds to a different texture:

Image

In this case, this image has every texture used for sidewalks, streets, sewer cover, grass etc etc.
So you can recreate any sidewalks, street from the game using this simple texture.
Image

Here is the same image with all the textures separated from each other for better view:
You can build anything you want using those squares, you just have to assign the UV Tile size in the Tileset window to 32x32 in Crocotile 3d and start to build your own model or recreate any part of the game.
Image

The same rule apply for every building or level in the game, all the textures use 32x32 pixels.
This texture for example have some doors that use two squares 64x32.
Image

I was testing this program and i am surprised how easy you can build some areas of the town in just a few minutes, The only difficult part of this, is to extract the textures from the game and then fix the palette colors and its time consuming. Also you can export any level you made in Crocotile 3D to Unity 3D, the exported file format is .obj

So, if you want to make a game with Old School PS graphichs you can give it a try to this program.
You can download this for free, but you have to paid $10 for save and export options to be available. I already purchased a License Key :)

Here there are some videos i made using Crocotile 3D:

Silent Hill 1 3D Tile Map

Im working on a full explorable level of Alchemilla Hospital, this includes all floors (BF - 1F - 2F - 3F) and even a Rooftop.
I already have 80% of the map finished.

All rooms are accessible, even those that are not accessible in the game.
Every door in the map is openable and you can explore every room without any load.
I am adding some ambient effects, like, shadows, fog, snow, reverb zones etc.

All the textures used in this map are ripped from the game disc.

Can you guess which room is this?:

Wow, this looks amazing! Can't wait to see more.
And that room must be the doctor's office, if I'm not mistaken?

Silent Hill 1 3D Tile Map

Post by Johnny_Doe on Mon Feb 29, 2016 11:32 am

The lighting is very atmospheric. Can't see the ligtbulbs though) But that's what it is in original game so I like your attention to the details. I can see many people complaining about the graphics but I still want to see the whole game remade as exact copy of the original the way you are making it now. It would be nice to have two versions, original and enhanced as two different projects. If you need any help with modeling, I would be glad to participate.

Oh my god, this looks incredible! I love the picture of the Medicine Room, and I love the video of you walking around in the Examination Room. Even though it's old style graphics, it looks gorgeous.

I'm so, so excited to see what you do with this! :D

Not only the lighting, but the shadows also give another atmospheric feeling to the scene, also, i love
that orange type of color in the lights, is very silent hillish :D. I can use a more natural light color, like white,
but it lost that silent hill feeling. About the lightbulbs, im thinking to use the fluorescent light bulbs texture
that are used in the Cafe 5to2 to add it in the entire hospital and make it more realistic.

Johnny_Doe wrote:I can see many people complaining about the graphics

I dont care what they said, graphics doesn´t make a game special. Besides, i tried to
recreate the hospital with better graphics before, but its very time consuming, so i ended up to leave the project at the middle of development because of that, it gets a bit of frustrating sometimes.

Johnny_Doe wrote:It would be nice to have two versions, original and enhanced as two different projects.

If you notice, i keep that pixel style graphics in the game, but i can make the textures look more smoother, exactly like you can change it in the epsxe emulator, this can be done changing the filter mode in Unity3D:

Point: Point filtering - texture pixels become blocky up close.
Bilinear: Bilinear filtering - texture samples are averaged.
Trilinear: Trilinear filtering - texture samples are averaged and also blended between mipmap levels.

I totally agree with you about the graphics, I feel the same way. Besides, if it is easier for you to finish the project using Crocotile 3D, it's ok. I think the only thing that matters is the final result. What we can see now is beautiful in its own way. You had to merge all the palettes for every texture by hand, hack the camera, hack lighting and fog, measure the distances and model all of it by yourself which looks like true dedication to me. I remember your first try on the hospital, it looked cool too (too much specularity though). I wish you to stay on your track and finish the whole thing succesfully. And again, if you need my or anyone else's help just let us know. I think there are people who can follow your directions and your vision. Keep calm and remake Silent Hill :)

Nice work man, can't wait for the demo, or any playable version of this game really! I might just grab a copy of this crocotile software and start making something myself.

This looks really good. Are you baking any of the lighting, or is it all realtime? I can't tell.

ALCHEMILLA HOSPITAL DEMO v1.01 (Unity 3d / Crocotile 3D)
Image

FIRST DEMO RELEASED (v1.01) DOWNLOAD (20.8Mb).rar
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30497817/AH1.01_DEMO/AH_V1.01.rar

This demo includes the entire hospital to explore by yourself, this includes: BF - 1F - 2F - 3F & RF.
This is an unfinished version, so there are a few empty rooms without no objects inside, also, there
are some locked doors, that means that those rooms are not finished yet, so stay tuned for a finished version.
The rooftop is also unifinished, i have to add more objects.

I don't post a playthrough video of this demo because of the surprise factor you know.
Hope you enjoy this demo.

WASD: Walk
SHIFT: Run
F: Flashlight
E: Open door/Interact
R: Zoom
ESC: Quit Game
