Looking to build a team to make a fan game (a sort of pitch)

Post by white_noiz on Fri Jan 01, 2016 9:46 pm

Hi everyone, I hope you're all well! This is the first time I'm posting here, so I hope this is the right section lol.

A little about me: My name is Miranda and I've been a fan of the series since pretty much the beginning. My sister loaned SH1 from a friend when it came out; I was still a kid at the time, and one of my favourite things to do was to snuggle up on the couch with my mother and watch my sister play it. I've been a fan ever since.

Silent Hill 1 will always be my favourite in the series, probably because it was the first one I ever saw. I've been wanting to make my own games for a while now (like I'm sure a lot of gamers do) and it was when I was having an SH discussion with my sister sometime last year that this idea popped into my head. I've been pretty much obsessed with this concept ever since. I even played around with Unity and made a prototype so that I could test some things out and get myself inspired.

I'll post a few screenshots - although I have to warn you that the graphics are really bad, because I'm not the best with these kinds of things lol.

You can find the other screenshots on my tumblr here.

My idea: Not quite a remake, but more of a return to the original game. I'd love to explore the concept of Alessa's story - even though, yes, we already know it. But we only know it from a sort of outside perspective.

My idea was that you play as Alessa, and you see her side of the story as she's rushing around town trying to place the Seals everywhere. You have to avoid confrontations with the various monsters, keep her from going mad (various monster interactions and other things will have an actual toll on her sanity), and you have to journey through her insane world and, in addition, a new level/dimension. I was worried that too much of the "nightmarish Otherworld" would make it get old pretty fast and, thus, far less scary, so I wondered if maybe Alessa could have an extra level/dimension, an even more horrifying and insane world to fight through - a dimension exclusive only to her since she is the one with God in her womb.

I was hoping that returning to the first game in this way will give us a new way to remember/rediscover what made us so scared of Silent Hill in the first place. I know there'll be some of you who won't like this idea, and that's totally fine, but I'm hoping that there'll be others that do like this idea. Obviously I've got a lot more written down on what could be implemented in the game and such, I'm just really hesitant to write it all down in an introductory post lol.

My problem is that I can't do this alone. I'm so bad with programming and stuff - my only real talent is writing. So I was hoping to build a team of fellow SH fans who can work on this game with me, so that, together, we can build something good. Whether you can help with textures or writing or level design or music, whatever, anything that could help. (Unfortunately, everything will have to be volunteer-based only, meaning I can't really pay anyone for the work. I am but a poor person.)

If you'd like to work on this project with me, then please email me: thatsickroom@gmail.com - you can also get in touch with me via tumblr if you're registered there.

Making an edit to say: I know this is quite an ambitious project, and that there might be certain things (legal issues, etc) that could get in the way of it. So if things don't quite work out, then I'm always open to making an original game with very similar ideas. If you'd still like to help with such a project, of if you'd like me to help with something you're working on, then simply send an email my way.

Thanks for reading this post :)

Miranda

Greetings and Salutations.

Your screen shots look amazing !

I have a question about your concept though. Are you a mental projection of Alessa or a physical version of her in this game ?

Thank you! :) Although, since it's simply a prototype, all textures, models, etc. are kind of temporary.

You'd play as the mental projection of Alessa (the one you see during the first game), since I figured her physical body would be kept somewhere safe and she probably couldn't do much in her condition anyway.

Very interesting, what engine you will use to make this project?

She already said she's using Unity.

@ Miranda

I think you should share some more info publicly or make a group or something where people can discuss. It'd help to show and maybe increase the interest and peeps would come together and see what's up more easily. (Probably a basic forum or somewhere anyone can join easily; for example, I don't use FB or Tumblr - Emails are very scattered and personal)

Also, some more details on the scope of the project would help...

Like what kind of skills you want to utilise or areas you need help with.

- Writers
- Graphics
- Programmers
- Editors/Testers (Text, Graphics, Code, Bugs...) [Could help there]
- Audio (Music, FX, Dialogue, Recording, Production) [Could help there]

Some of these are easier, some are harder and require more specialised skills, some you may not even need.

Making a mobile game or, generally, a game smaller or larger in scope needs very different amounts of commitment, expertise and above all, time. I just find that having a somewhat clear vision of the aim is beneficial.

This would also save you the hassle of repeating the same things to everyone who might contact you.

For example, I'd assume you don't want to record dialogue but I could be wrong...

Or maybe you'll decide on the scope after you test the waters but still, you should have a basic framework at least.

Good luck.

Hi everyone! Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you all, I've been a little distracted recently lol.

First I'd like to say thank you to everyone for your input so far, whether it's on here, reddit or in emails! It's very much appreciated :)

I've had suggestions that I should focus on a spiritual successor instead of an actual fan game. I'd love to make a spiritual successor, and I'm very open to that idea. So if this project doesn't work out, then I'll probably go down that route instead lol.

I'm currently trying to get in touch with Konami to see if I can get permission to make this game. It's probably a long shot and I'm not 100% sure they'll say yes, but I still have some hope. I did find this, however: https://uk.secure.konami-europe.com/lin ... l-purposes

So I'll give them a little while to get back to me, and if they don't then I might just go ahead with the project anyway lol. So, right now, everything is up in the air.

Sorry for the late update! I'll definitely keep you guys more up to date in the future.

I've been using Unity to make the prototype, and I'll probably want to stick to using it for the full project.

I'd be more than happy to share more information. To be honest, I didn't share much at first because I wasn't sure how well this project would be received (and I might have been a little paranoid about sharing ideas lol) but after how positive everyone has been about it I'd be glad to be more open about it.

I like the idea of having a group place to discuss things. I'll see what I can do!

I do actually have a design document I've been working on during the prototype, and it lists pretty much everything I'll need. I'll probably post it at a later time. I can say that pretty much everything you've listed will be needed lol.

What I can think of so far:

Writers - story/plot, dialogue, puzzles, memos, etc.

Graphics - textures, level/area models, character models, enemy models, item models, animations.

Programmers

Testers

Audio/Composers - music, sound effects, voice actors

Artists - concept art, level design, character design, item design, etc

Managers - basically helping keep everything organized and make sure everyone is up to date on everything.

Anyone can help whenever they want and with whatever they want. If a composer wants to have a go at texturing, then that's totally fine. If a writer wants to try and practice coding, go for it. No one has to be limited to a particular category.

Since it has to be volunteer-based only, there won't be a deadline or anything. Anyone can chip in whenever they can/want to, and I think it's safe to say that production might take a long time. That's totally fine with me.

If this project does go ahead, I'll have some sort of place that will list the details above and more, I'll probably also make a blog somewhere to post updates and other things, and there will definitely be a group/place where people can discuss things/ask questions/etc. There will also be a private place for everyone on the team to discuss things.

Meanwhile, if anyone has any questions then feel free to post them here or email me! Again, thank you everyone for how positive you've been about all of this! :)

Make a game is a very hard work, i'm a Unity user and i make two projects with the engine, it's a very good engine and easy to use compared to other engines like Unreal.
I really want to help but i don't have much knowledge in this area, i only make basic models and i don't use de right way to texture it, also, my knowkedge in Programmation is Zero, Good Luck on this project.

If your still going forward with this project I'd like to help. My game design skills are very limited, I used to mod Doom II so I doubt I have the skills neccessary for texture/geometry unless you needed someone additional for simple stuff?
If not I'd like to be a tester.
