Why is it being called SH8?

Going by that it would be SH7. Even if, the numbers stopped after SH4. So there's no SH5, 6, or 7. Why must people call it SH8? Why not, "Vatra's SH game"? It's longer, but correcter.

It's referred as SH8 because in the press release today they said this particular Silent Hill was the "8th installment" so I went ahead and made it SH8 instead of SH6 until we actually get a real title.

Everyone should now call it Silent Hill 8. It's 'official' for now since that's how they themselves call it in the official Press Release. As Whitney said, it's called SH8 'cause it's the 8th installment (not to mention the chronological order in which the games were released). Other than that, the other order is based on the alternative titles (Homecoming or V, Origins or Zero, Shattered Memories or "6" etc.) and on the content of the games (Origins should be before SH1, etc). Anyway, it's obvious that they count them according to their release date and order rather than content and subtitles. Of course, there is always a chance that a subtitle will be added or the name being changed completely.

Yeah, I have no doubt that the subtitle will be changed. Frankly, who knows, we might never see another numbered Silent Hill at all. I mean, it does get confusing, does Origins count as 0 or 5? And if that's the case, the Homecoming would be 6, and Shattered Memories would be 7, but at the same time, Shattered Memories is a reimagining, so it is an alternate SH1, basically, which would make this new one SH7... So it can get very confusing, so from here on out, I'm guessing they're just gonna have sub titles.

It was called Silent Hill 8 just for convenience so that people wouldn't confuse it with the original Silent Hill. The title says simply Silent Hill aka new Silent Hill (2011).

I know it'd be the eight installment, that makes sense. But calling it SH8, just doesn't make sense. It's just like what they do with Tomb Raider (TR Underworld is known as TR8). They dropped the numbers long ago, since the development moved out of Japan. Try doing that with Resident Evil up until RE5 came out. You can't because you'd lose count quickly.

It's just because its the 8th Silent Hill title, it makes it easier for people in the industry, "Silent Hill 8" sounds more professional than "Vatra's Silent Hill" or "That new Silent Hill game", it has nothing to do with the content of the game, in fact, the only place it has been called SH8 within Konami is on the global site for shareholders, and even there it has a *Provisional title reminder
