homecoming is VERY underrated. you should get it if you can.

There is no bad Silent Hill game, and I hope Konami keep it this way.

Maybe SH2 is the scariest for me, specially when James go trough the prison jumping down and down, like a no ending hole into the hell - and the physiological aspect increase the scary to me.

sh1,it was the first one I played and I thought the graphics and sound were well used to make it very creepy, esp. for ps1. I don't really play SH to be scared, or I'd hate the series, though, because I don't find most of it scary.

Sorry, I really don't understand if you agree with me or not. If not: I mean BAD game. If you look at ratings, all of them are around 7 - 9 (good - great). Some specific reviewer put a low rating for some SHs and many of fans doesn't like this or that one. I read a review about all series and the guy said: you can buy any of the games and have fun.

I do recommend Shattered Memories, if you're ready to forget original series for a moment.

I play Silent Hill because I love the atmosphere, just like I play every other horror game. I do love the Alan Wake combat; Dead Space is always fun to play, especially cutting the limbs from necros'; Silent Hill has choppy combat, but it makes the series scary. The survival is what makes the game; the feeling that you can't kill the monsters is what I love. I just dislike the saving in Downpour, but the combat is relatively entertaining.

SH3 definitely, the mix of mystery and the "in your face" type of intense fear made it a really interesting experience. SH2 and SH1 are equally as scary imo, despite being so different from each other.
SH4 feels more like an adventure than anything else, but the horror elements stand out the most because of this.

Bro facts.

Personally, Silent Hill 3 is my scariest, maybe it's the increased claustrophobia and the disgusting imagery you're constantly being bombarded with. Plus the fact that everything actually feels threatening.

Man that's so true, while playing SH3 for the first time i was just screaming for fresh air in my head in the first parts of the game, get out of the mall, then subway, then sewers, then office building.

Man i was like yaay finally on the streets!! , when i got out of the hilltop center, the game indeed feels very claustrophobic and is the goriest out of them all in my opinion and i consider it the scariest, SH2 is like teletubbies compared to 3 in terms of being scary.

That's one thing, Silent Hill 2 was only scary once (and it was very scary) but the enemies are really non-threatening and it's easy to get used to the aesthetic look of the game. In Silent Hill 1, 3, Origins and Downpour, it does actually feel like things are out to get you (I'm on my third playthrough of Downpour and I still get all tense when a rainstorm hits).

No I do agree with you. I've yet to play a Silent Hill game I hated. All of them at times frustrate me (Usually on the first playthough when I haven't a clue what I'm meant to be doing) but there hasn't been a game I bitterly regretted.
And I will look into Shattered Memories.

That's the thing, though: all horror is really only scary once. If you go at it again, you know what is coming. The only scares will come where you've forgotten what is coming.
The above post is intended to be factual, unless it isn't.

This is very true. Some games try to remedy this by having random events occur in each playthrough. Dead Space is the first thing that comes to mind. Some games can pull that off well, but it makes describing your experiences to friends a little awkward (especially if they've seen something completely different).

Some moments still unnerve me (it's the musical cues mostly), but as you said it's only truly scary the first time.

SH2 is not scary per say (actually it is), it's just incredibly and depressingly sinister.

I don't really know how to answer this, because I don't really have a clear cut definition of what I consider "scary."

But I think I would have to say 3, because certain things still make me feel uneasy even though I know they're coming. (*cough* a certain mannequin comes to mind *cough*)

It looks like things are getting too spicy for the pepper.

Pyramid head is always creepy; the streets of Silent Hill after the hospital in SH2 is quite creepy, and the nurses.

Easy question! SH1 by a country mile ;) SH2 wasnt scary in the least, unnerving maybe, but never scary, Silent Hill 3 was far too blatant with its attempts at scares, its haunted house stuff and it doesnt wash,at least not with me. SH1 creeped me out in a way that nothing, either cinema or videogame has managed to do. It crawls under your skin and tears at your nerves ..its that fear of knowing theres something behind or just ahead..that beautiful sense of disorientation that has never been equalled or replicated...its just....perfect!

I agree with all this. SH1 is the only game, ever, I've had to actually shut off and take a break from. I remember even trying to play it muted. That didn't last long, what with the pesky radio being a necessity and all that.

I think maybe no other game of this kind got the same impact in me, SH was amazing - I had nightmares before playing late at night!

PH is not scary to me as an isolate character, but what he can do, as he seams immortal. I fear the situations, it's strange, SH2 its' strange, a unique game.
