How is this game for PSP?

Post by Q. Valintyne on Mon Apr 30, 2012 12:45 pm

what wrote:Having played both the PS2 and PSP version I would recommend the latter, as the PSP's visuals are much crisper and cleaner (kind of important for a game which places such a high priority on examining details in the environment), and there are noticeable graphical glitches present in the PS2 version I did not see on PSP.

Interesting... I actually found the opposite to be true. I guess the reason it's "crisper" on PSP is due to technological limitations. I never had an issue with graphical glitches with the PS2 version; I guess I just got lucky.

It's crisper because the display on the PSP produces results superior to pretty much anything you can do with a PS2 since you have to either play it on a fuzzy old TV or stretch it across an HDTV and we all know how ugly standard def games look on HDTV in most practical circumstances. The PSP gives the game the crispness of HD in a native near-SD resolution.
The above post is intended to be factual, unless it isn't.

It looks crisper on PSP because all PSP games are made with the PSP's screen in mind; a nice little 480x272 LCD screen of joy. Even though it's lower-res than a lot of PS2 games, it still looks better just because it's a native LCD screen, as opposed to PS2 games which were designed around the fact that people were playing them on CRT sets using composite cables (and some people even used RF adapters, sheesh). Also that PS2 games mostly were interlaced by default, whereas the PSP outputted at the full framebuffer of 480x272 in progressive scan, so you'd get all the information rather than just half of it.

Ahhh... this. :)

I still use a CRT. It's a newer one so I never had to use an RF adapter. My friend still uses one to this day. I shutter.

I'm never in "technical" mode when I post here so I look totally dumb when I talk about it. I save it for my exams and then it's gone.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I didn't get an HDTV until around March last year, when my CRT TV that I used for over a decade finally started to kick the bucket.

But dem RF adapters...Easily the worst signal quality you could possibly experience on a game console . PS2 games still looked pretty great on CRT sets with composite from what I remember. Mine started to look horrible with all the visual artifacts it started producing when it got near it's death last year.

My PS2 has some really annoying audio glitches that crop up on and off ('Where's Michelle…elle?"); the dialogue in Kauffman's speech about guilt got "out of order" and ended up sounding like a YouTube Poop, phrases that are to the effect of "Are you finished?" will sometimes be skipped or the game will skip the nodding/shaking motion, and two cutscenes "stopped" and went into some weird kind of slow-mo until Kauffman moved into his chair and Harry slid onto his bed.

The PSP version is just fine, although I'm surprised to hear that so many people like the Wii version. From what I remember the controls were totally wonky -- like, if you wanted to open your camera or phone, you'd end up making the flashlight go crazy trying to press the right button. Or am I wrong here?

Well, if you keep your hand steady and don't flail trying to hit a button, it should be fine. At least I think that's what you're referring to.

Yeah, it is. I was new to the Wii at that point, so maybe that was the problem. :)

I want it for the Vita but the damn PS store isn't fully updated. Likewise Origins.

Fair enough. If u do i'd suggest waiting till a higher calibre of games release. Hopefully it'll reach the level of quality thats on the PSP. And a reasonable priced memory card because 8GB doesn't cut it!. I have 1 digital game & its full already (MGS3), so if SHM & Origins ever hit im fucked for space 8-).

Yeah! That's what I plan on doing. It's sad for me to say that I actually found the day a Silent Hill game wouldn't force me to go out and buy a new video game platform. :( But on the other hand, I don't want to be buying something like that for just one game  I'll go out and get it once a lot of others are released that I'll enjoy playing too!

Well.. theres others too. Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear, Gravity Rush, Rayman, Mortal Kombat, WipEout & Assasins creed, Need for speed & COD drop in a few weeks. So theres a gd variety despite what people say. I'd say thats pretty solid for a maiden year. Also u can transfer ur psp games directly from ur psp, so u can play ur SM & Origins on ur Vita alongside the already available SH1 ;).
