The Only SH I Haven't Beaten

I've been a big fan of the SH series since 2010. I've re-played all of the games multiple times...except this one. Not sure why, but to this day, it's the only one I've yet to beat.

How do you feel about it? Trying to convince myself to go back to it, but the last time I played it was late 2010 I believe. My parents weren't divorced yet and I remember them both being in the other room. I got frustrated with the 2nd run through during the orphanage and haven't played since.

I feel like I'm obligated to finish this game seeing as I call Silent Hill my all time favorite game series, and I remember enjoying it immensely until I was saddled with the long escort mission.

I beat it a couple of times. Only got he good ending once, and buggered if I can remember what I did to get that ending!
Mainly I remember the dread I had putting the disc into my PS2.
I'm stuck in Alien Isolation and The Evil Within. But that is more annoyance than dread.
During my first few plays of Silent Hill 4, I just had that inexplicable dread! It really gets under the skin. But it does so much right and really takes the series into new areas.
Just hope you get to beat it soon!

It's not for everyone. Perhaps it was ahead of its time. It might feel a lot different to load it up now. It doesn't hurt to give it a try.

Playing The Evil Within was a grind at some points but I am glad I finished it and the DLC for that matter.

It’s funny how opinions on this particular installment vary so much. There are plenty of people who dislike it, but for me SH4 was a great installment in the series. It’s different just enough from the previous three to make it unique, but not so different that it’s way out in left field. Objectively, Henry is easily the least interesting main character in the entire series, so that could be considered a weak point. That said, the real story is about
REVEAL SPOILER
Walter and the 21 Sacraments, we just see it through the eyes of a random person who moved into the apartment… which happened to be Henry.

The escort section never struck me as all that taxing, but if it is a problem, there are places where it's possible to leave Eileen behind in each level and later come back to get her and advance after the level is cleared. And the game while solid throughout, really shines its best at the end levels.

My vote: Beat it!

I, personally, have always liked Eileen and wasn't bothered by having her around one bit. (But then again...I say the same for RE4's Ashley...)
I think the levels are interesting, atmospheric, and beautiful enough to go through again the second half of the game. They are expanded, after all.
I loved having Eileen with me in the Orphanage. That was a nice touch having her read the diary.
Anyway, I would say go for it! It's a good game when given a chance. It keeps the feeling of the first three while trying new things. :)

I absolutely, absolutely love Silent Hill 4.

The flow, the soundtrack, the surrealism of it, the characters, the apartment. It was such a cool and unique game.

Though it's definitely flawed, I find the problems are easy to forgive.

It's very much worth putting the effort into beating. But I guess I can see why the game would piss some people off.

SH4 is one of my favs....initially when it dropped a lot of folks criticized it, and while there are some issues with it (annoying ghosts/ that dreadful elevator level with the wall monsters...>_<..)...but the overall game has an obscure and abstract atmosphere, and the dynamic between Walter and the room was a very unique concept.

I also loved how the outside world was going about it's every day motions, but you was dealing with a world of madness within your apt.

I loved tapping the windows! And also how even your apartment became less safe as the game went on.
Damn, we got a really great game out of this instalment.

It always bothered me that I couldn't toss something at the window to try and break it. Only to see some sort of supernatural power negate that plan.

I know .... nitpicking ......lol

Is there any way to make the Eileen part easier at least? I remember when I played her AI was dumb.

It's kinda funny how both RE 4 and SH 4 saddled you with escorting a useless character (combat wise).

From what I remember, you can leave her in a cell with a hole in the floor in the Water Prison while you go and do other stuff.
And in Nursery World (It's been a while, not got a PS2!) at the house area with four exits, get her to read and run off as she reads.
In the Station world, you can leave her in the room on the platform that has a ladder.
And don't arm her either.

Any other offers of advice, anyone?

Honestly, it’s a mystery to me why people were so very off-put by the escort mission, at least the mechanics of it. Eileen can’t die until the end so you never have to worry about that, she is helpful in some combat situations if you equip her with a weapon, you can leave her behind in levels and get her later if you so choose, she is able to read things that Henry is apparently unable to, and all it takes to deal with her possession is one holy candle towards the end of the game. The only thing for me that was annoying was that she would occasionally logjam narrow corridors blocking Henry from running away from enemies.

It became annoying when you was travelling back down that tower in that Water Tower World? (yeah it's been years since I played this game)...but while I was fighting crows and Being chased by Walter, Eileen constantly wanted to fight everything while Walter was shooting at us with his gun.

Eileen is helpful, but when I wanted to just run away from Walter, she would either cause me to die or she would just take on a huge amount of damage. Still a great game...but eh, AI from any game in that era wasn't really that great....AI even today still struggles to perform appropriately.

Yea, she really wasn't that bad. Eileen can't die and she can help in combat. She isn't that slow unless you let her get injured.

Though as stated above, she can be annoying in the water prison.

As for leaving her behind, I've done that by accident before in areas with no enemies and have come back to her royally fucked up. So that can happen I suppose. Not sure if it was a glitch or just a means of preventing you from wanting to leave her places.

Her craziness when she's super injured is interesting at least. Especially in the forest world.

If you are coming up on an area you want run through, but you’re afraid she will stop and fight enemies, simply unequip her weapon just before the area and without a weapon she will not stop to fight while you are running (at least in the PS2 version).

It's not my favorite game of the series, but I did beat it.. only once. It's sad, because it is a decent game, but every time I think about replaying it, I ultimately decide not to because I remember the second half (that good old escort mission deal) being an incredibly draining experience to get through.. and also because the scary giant Eileen head was super traumatizing.. XD just kidding with that second bit, of course..

In all seriousness, I should get around to playing it through again.. and so should you, OP. Though I am sure it's tough dealing with the frustration and bad memories and whatnot, I think it would be worth it to push through. Even if you don't, however, it does not make you any less of a fan to the series, so you shouldn't feel pressured to do anything you don't want to. At the very least, you should just try. I believe in you!

SH4 is such a bizarre game. I liked literally every aspect of the game, except the one that matters most as a video game: its gameplay. It's the reason I never personally beat it and simply opted to watch a playthrough of it on YouTube instead many years ago. The escort missions, the boring retread of the same areas you'd already been to earlier (swapping the textures and moving a few things around doesn't satiate me,) the ghosts which should've been scary/creepy but wound up being annoying due to them hampering your ability to explore certain areas without taking proximity damage, the crappy combat, and the need to backtrack to your apartment more than you should have to thanks to the dumb limited inventory and the inability to discard items whilst outside the apartment were collectively just too much for me to deal with. I can't stand shitty game design and SH4 was just chock full of it.

I can easily appreciate their desire to not merely do a SH version 1.4 in terms of game design, but it was just executed poorly. It happens. I believe that the bulk of the criticisms the game had upon its initial release were mostly bullshit though, because they didn't focus too much on the gameplay, but on external and abstract "reasons" that were garbage like "oh, it's not SH2, therefore it sucks!" and "oh, where's mah tank controls? it sucks!" and "too western! it sucks!" -- crap like that.

Anyway, you don't really have to beat it to be a "true fan" or whatever. I think only blowhards would fault you for that (not beating it.)

I'm in the same boat as you; I never finished it, and I haven't got a clue why I never did.

I'm currently playing through it for the first time and it makes even less sense why I didn't finish it, I'm enjoying it craploads! Amazing game!
