Probably off camera. LM states this.

And of course first time I played this and got the dream sequence, I made Heather fall into the hole... within the first few seconds! Is this a world record?

I just pick up a translated version of "Lost Memories". According to the book, the dream is a premonition - the first sign of the awaking of Alessa, and his powers. It make sense to me.

"Additionally, Heather's abilities as the mother of God are awakened as she
regains her past memories in the game, and a premonition of this is already
apparent even in the bad dream that immediately follows the opening. What
becomes the scene of the beginning of her nightmare is the amusement park
that also appears in the latter half of the game. One can think that
Heather is endowed with precognitive abilities and that this dream was a
warning that she sent to herself."

Precognition is "future sight", if she sent herself that dream it would have to be from the future.

I'll respectfully disagree with you. Precognition is an expression from parapsychology witch means an ability of predict the future (in simple words), not from a message from the future, but from a perception about the future. I the case of the game, it can be a magic super power, but not something like "butterfly effect" - a message from me to myself in the past.

A premonition has a "common sense" of a extra sensorial super power, but can also be something rational. In a dream we can "predict" the future because another kind of intelligence is free to express itself. Maybe the Heather's unconscious feel the threat getting closer and connect all in a bad dream that can became true - a warning to her from herself. But always at the present time.

We can dream about uhn...

Though if she has precognitive abilities, there's no need for Heather to "send herself" a warning: She would merely be able to see what might happen in the future, and she could see that and not really know how she saw the future as well as not realize it is in fact a vision of the future until she gets up to the amusement park.
Oh, you think darkness is your ally. You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it--I didn't see the light until I was already a man. By then, it was nothing to me but blinding! The shadows betray you because they belong to me!

If the dream is a warning she sent herself than it would have to be from the future. All Heather's abilities do is allow her to see the future. You're forgetting too, that time and physical limitations are transcended in the other world ("dream world").

I think what might not be sitting well with me is the idea that, "One can think that Heather is endowed with precognitive abilities and that this dream was a warning that she sent to herself. " Couldn't she conceivably see the future without "sending it to herself"?

I could just be a stickler over the phrasing.

Since it is Silent Hill, all this sort of stuff is possible. The laws of physics get broken or can get broken all the time.

Could someone make it very clear why she would have to have "sent" it to herself? The way I see precognition is that a person experiences a vision of the future, but it is not so much sent from the future as it is an experience. I'm a bit muddled about all of this.

Heather would have similar powers to Alessa and she would be warning herself of the inevitable. After all, we're talking about a person who sent a "monster" on herself to kill herself as an "act of benevolence".

There's actually a film by Norio Tsuruta called "Premonition" (orig. title: Yogen). It's pretty good, I watched it a while back. Apparently I gave it an 8/10 on imdb, so I must've enjoyed it. Recommend it to everyone if they haven't seen it already.

I didn't saw Premonition yet, but that what WhiteClaudia wrote reminded me of Prince of Darkness.

I'd see Premonition, and I strongly recommend it! It's a very interesting view of a "gift" that maybe a "course" - alright, no spoilers!

Pyramid_head: she may go to the future and back in otherworld since there is no physics limitation, but my perception about the game and reading Lost Memories is that they don't use this resource, I think the Idea is about a classic (cinematographic) precognition in a dream. There isn't the situation when she sent a message to herself in the past, at list I can't remember.
