Still the best game I have ever played.

Post by Promise75 on Fri Jun 28, 2013 11:47 pm

I played this game back in the summer of 2002. I have played many games since. I have played this one maybe 20-25 times through. I played it again last week. I still think it has the best story, music, and side characters of every game I have seen and played in the last 11 years. Angela's story almost makes me cry. Of all the characters in Silent Hill over the years, her's, in my opinion, is the saddest. Any thoughts? Memories?

In a way every character's story is equally sad. Each one had to go through a lot of pain and suffering, just some turned out better than others.

Easily the best game I have played in 15 years of gaming, no doubt. The various emotions I experienced while playing this masterpiece was incredible; I've rarely got teary eyed while playing a game before, but this game just destroyed me emotionally.
I still find Mary's story the saddest, don't get me wrong I was still extremely taken aback by what the others had gone through, but I instantly had a soft spot for her the moment James starting reading the letter and we got a little insight into just what was happening. NO words can even begin to describe how great this game is, it's on a completely different level to any other game out there, in my opinion anyway. The depressive vibe this game gives off is otherworldly it really is, I've never experienced anything like this before, especially from a video game. The way the game forces you to walk the lonely streets in complete silence, all the while each individual characters heartbreaking situation sinking in deeper and deeper with each step you take, it's an unforgettable experience. Just can't believe I delayed playing this game/series for 10+ years...slap me someone, please.

I Silent Hill 2 !! :P

Maybe the best story ever told in a game, but I've played "better games".

I still tear up during Mary's monologue. The voice acting was superb.

I'm really burned out from this game. While I like it and I think it's overall great, there are downsides. Such as the fact that sometimes it gets boring because of the pace and how most monsters really aren't that threatening. The storyline is great, sure. But I disagree if people think it's original. Mostly, SH2 is Jacob's Ladder repackaged.

Yeah, mostly the same here. I think it's great, but wouldn't really say it's a game with the best story, characters etc.

I appreciate all aspects mentioned already, but I probably replay several of the other SH games more. I would say the story is the best, though.

I can see what you mean by the enemies not being too threatening, but being that I've only played through the game once I can't speak too much on this topic at this moment in time. To be honest though, even if the game didn't have enemies I'd still be on edge throughout the whole playthrough as the monsters were only 20% of the terror, it was the eerie silence that killed me. I actually had to pause the game as it all felt too real, I actually felt I was going crazy at certain points throughout my playthrough, and pausing the game every few minutes was the only way I could regain my sanity, well what was left of it anyway. I must've paused the game 500+ times, easily.

My opinion is the only one that matters of course, so anyone who wants to speak dirty of this game can just about HUSHHH it. Failure to abide by these rules will result in this:

Nope.

Silent Hill 2 may be a little bit more than a game, but it is hardly the best as far as being a "game" is concerned.
It has nice graphics for it's time, the controls and fighting are.... decent? Average? The camera work is dreadful, the storyline and overall "feeling" from the atmosphere of the game are absolutely amazing, but still. There are "better games" than Silent Hill 2.

However, in terms of the emotional experience one gets from a game... definitely top notch for me. I'd be hard-pressed to name anything as "better" in that area. Maybe Planescape :Torment.

How?
From what I recall, had Alessa successfully spread the crest throughout the town, the God would've been obliterated, or warded off. Instead Harry stepped in post-God-birth and murderized the shit out of the God. - NarooN

Not sure if it's the best...as much as i loved SH2, i always thought the story itself was a tad overrated. It was amazing for it's time tho...that transistion from SH1 to what we saw in SH2,...real fog, better flashlight mechanics, amazing atmosphere, better monster design, gripping storyline and it introduced us to one of the most talked about icons in the franchise..PH.

It's easy now to say that it's not the best game now, but but back then i do believe it was one of the best even if the scores for it back then was somewhere around 7-7.5 to a rare 8. But visually it was incredible...it also touched on alot of mature themes in subtle ways...

You guy's summed it up best. It has one of the best, if not the best story in the series but honestly, gameplay, enemy roster and mechanic wise, I find it to be one of the most dull. Once you get over the first initial wow factor after a few play through's, it's actually quite monotonous. The idea of Silent Hill 2 though, the concept.. it packs a wallop alright. I find Downpour and Homecoming to be more addicting to replay, mechanic wise.

This game is until this day ... the best game I have ever played. I have not played another game since ( at the time of release ) that put together the visuals, sound, atmosphere, emotion, and unparalleled story telling experience as masterfully crafted title has. Not to mention the fact that in your first walkthrough ( providing you have not looked at any spoilers ) it is impossible to get a good ending. I have yet to play another game ( And I have played a ton since my first walkthrough ) that came even close to the experience I had playing this game for the first time. You must look at it like that. The experience you had during you 1st walkthrough, when you had no bullets, no health drinks, no med kits. Not after multiple walkthroughs when you can walk through it armed to the teeth and thousands of health drink and med kits. Compare it to any other game after you 1st walkthrough and see if you can really find a better gaming/storytelling experience. I'd bet you be hard pressed to find another title that beats it.

Pretty good article about the voice acting in Silent Hill 2.

Article is spot on as to why I always loved it and defended it. I prefer the strange surrealism that comes with the way they speak and talk.

And I don't think it's just nostalgia talking.

Very good article about the voice acting.

Even though I spoiled myself the ending, this game still had its impact on me. The story is one of the best stories in games (at least what I have played), if not the best.

And I liked the moments when there's nothing happening, like just in the beginning. Those made the game's overall feeling more subtle and lonely, almost serene.
Embrace the bosom of the
Holy Mother.
Admit your sins and be forgiven.
Eternal tranquility can be yours.

It seems like everything created for this game was to fit it's overall feeling. I never understood why some do not understand why the voice acting is so surreal ....
