Something I noticed in a cell in the Toluca Prison

Post by siha on Sat Aug 04, 2012 10:46 am

So, I am currently replaying Silent Hill 2 and a few hours ago I finally arrived at the Toluca Prison and something in the cells drew my attention. I remember the same thing happening pretty much each time I played the game. I looked it up on this board and didn't find any trace of it, so here it goes (in case it is something I missed out and that has already been talked about, just lock this topic I guess  )

In the cell in which you find the Oppressor tablet, am I the only one who noticed that before you can exit it, the door is blocked and James comments saying the bars are unbreakable or something like that? I play the game with French subtitles so I am not sure what the translation would be and I actually didn't really pay attention to the exact terms that were used and since it happens only the first time James gets in there, I could not check it out again.

Now that I know that the tablets represent James, Angela and Eddie, I was thinking that maybe locking James in the cell for a few seconds was a hint given by the SH creators to help us realize that this tablet represents him and that this cell is actually where he should be.
Or maybe it's just a glitch I get but all I can say is that we do get in two others cells (with closed doors) and this "locked door thing" only happens in this particular cell!
I was thinking...you're nice, but you can't help me.

Thought I was the only one who ever noticed that. I thought it was a glitch too, but since it happened to you I guess it's part of the game. Your theory seems to be correct -- it being a reference to his "Oppressor" role.

Yep, it's part of the game :) I can't remember the reasoning for it, or if they've even said the meaning behind it, but your explanation sounds spot on to me.

I highly doubt it's a glitch as it happens each play through. A brilliant idea it is though I never 'noticed' myself, I was too busy being frantic in attempt to get out.

Well, at least now I know for sure it's not a glitch. I'll admit I only noticed it the past 3-4 times I played it!

Naroon nailed it. It's just a more literal play on "Oppressor". :D
Isn't it in the same hallway where you can hear the noises above, or is that the opposite one?

I believe you can hear the noises in both hallways!

I like how you can take aim and kill the invisible 'ritual' monster that stomps around in his cell. The angle of the aim James takes suggests the monster is 8 or 9 feet tall!

I never saw it this way! Always thought the monster was like floating near the ceiling or just one weird monster hanging up there.

Am I the only one who jumps to the conclusion that it's PH fumbling around up there? The deep voice would be something that'd fit the executioners, I think.

iirc there are two "prisoners" in the game. Don't think it was PH's voice or anything since PH never speaks, though I think he moaned or something in the apartment when James starts shooting at him.

Whatever it is, it's invisible. I've specifically been able to view right where it drops dead, and there's no visible model.

Yeah, there's no actual model file for it iirc, at least it doesn't render anything. I'm sure that was intentional.

Its so heavy and disturbing.
