The developers took a lot of inspiration from a lot of movies, so expect to see many of the same titles and covering multiple categories.

Good topic, I'd been looking for films like Silent Hill. I read another thread somewhere else that said The Machinist has similar concepts. I haven't seen it yet but it's next on my list :D I watched Session 9 for the first time last week, it was really good. I like The Mist and Jacob's Ladder, but I haven't seen any of the other suggestions here yet... I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to scary films, I need to watch them with my boyfriend

This should be in the SH General Discussion rather than SH2, but what the hey.

Pan's Labyrinth reminded me of Silent Hill at times.

This is true.

You can also include:

MirrorMask
The Cube (Mostly thanks to Downpour)

As far as anime goes:

Boogiepop Phantom
Serial Expirements Lain
Monster
Ergo Proxy

Can't think of anymore. I'm horrible at remembering names.

Huh, Monster never reminded me of Silent Hill, to be honest. It is an awesome series though.

Anyway, another film I thought of - Phantoms.

There were psychological elements that reminded me of Silent Hill. Not necessarily the story, environments or anything like that though. Just the subtle effects of how the antagonist works on the protaganist's psyche with his actions through the series. I never did get to finish it though and now I can't find it anywhere, for free, that is.

How about:

The Vanishing (the Keifer Sutherland one)
The Wicker Man (the original)

Nightmare on Elm Street series
The Hellraiser series
The House series, the first one especially

Ah, when you put it like that, yes, I can see the similarity. I believe it's on Netflix - or it was, anyway.

Another anime series with a lot of psychological aspects is Texhnolyze. It's not much like Silent Hill, but it has a young girl who can see the future and is worshipped by some people, but she hates her power and it drives her crazy - maybe a little like Alessa? It also has a slight dual-world element to it. It's set in an underground city, which is a dark and horrible place, but there is still a world above - which, despite being a bright and sunny place, is actually more depressing than the underground city.

The whole series is very depressing and really slow at the start, but it's one of my favourites.

That reminded me of an anime disc I believe was done by Hayao Miyazaki called Memories. It is very Silent Hillesque.

Ah, then there is:

Ink (The music might be the most amazing part of the movie)
The Number 23
Room 1408

Also another film, I keep wanting to say it is called 'Darkness'. I can't remember. The plot revolves around a family that moved into a house where cultists used to live. The cultists sacrificed their own children, if memory serves, to bring about a power to take over the world but the ritual failed when a boy somehow was saved. The father of the family is the same boy who suppressed the memories. At the end he has to be sacrificed by his own flesh and blood and while the daughter tries to do a trachiotomy to save him he bleeds out. Etc, etc. Probably no point in watching the film now, lol.

I'm not big on anime but have either of you seen "Another"? I heard that it was good, sounds 'Hill-esque in theme from what I've heard. Got the first few eps downloaded, yet to get around to watching.

edit: here's some spoiler-free info on it: http://ruleofrosemysteries.com/2012/03/ ... ror-story/

And that reminded me of more anime, too ;)

As far as Miyazaki goes, Spirited Away might be a children's film, but it is about the main character being trapped in another realm with strange creatures. Or the possessed animal gods in Princess Mononoke, they were definitely quite chilling!

Another is (not Miyazaki) Cat Soup. A short film about a cat whose sister's soul is taken, and he goes on a journey to find it - very, very weird, surreal and creepy!

That, I haven't. I haven't been up to date on movies, anime or music in decades.

Check out the little known Anthony Hopkins' flick Audrey Rose. It's based on the novel of the same name. I don't want to spoil anything about the film, but the situation of Ivy is very reminiscent of Cheryl/Alessa.

Open Your Eyes, is a Spanish movie that's similar to Silent Hill. (Especially 2.) The remake Vanilla Sky sucks. Don't watch that.

Memento is a good one. Saw is Silent Hillish, at least the first 3 movies.

Shutter Island pretty much has the same psychological story that Silent Hill 2 has.
