SH1 Retro Links Compilation Thread

Post by dpaint on Sun Dec 13, 2015 6:58 pm

Thanks for the retro links. I was looking for silenthill.com's original pics and small movie clips in another post but the wayback machine can only do so much. Somebody might have them on file or floppy disk since it would have taken some time to download on a 28.8k modem :-)

All I can add is a trivia link at the moment. The localization company for SH was Latina International, still around today with SH in their portfolio listing here:

SH1 Retro Links Compilation Thread

Found two rare pictures in this website: http://www.playersc.com using WayBackMachine:

A dead beta larval stalker:
this picture could have been taken from an early alpha/beta or the E3 version.
The location seems to be the Queen Burger near the Cafe 5to2 (Old Silent Hill) at night:
Image

The posters behind Harry seems to be bigger than normal (stretched):

Pictures extracted from here:

Also, here you can find a list of differences of a possible alpha version of SH made by a user called: Badass Cyborg from: pub179.ezboard.com:

https://web.archive.org/web/20031230070 ... =831.topic

BEFORE THE GAME
The picture of Alessa is not featured in the intro FMV.
The quote featured in the intro FMV is different to that of the beta.
Background of title screen is different.
The sound scheme for the menus is different.
You can not access the Extra Options menu.
There is an extra option called Storyline, which is 5-pages of text, telling you about Harry, Cheryl, Dahlia, Kauffman and Silent Hill.

INTRO/ALLEY SCENE
The FMV clip of Harry getting out of his car is extended.
The model of Cheryl has no skins (except for the FMV clip).
The message that is displayed when Harry examines the squashed dog is different.
The wheelchair is missing.
If you turn back, there is not a fence blocking the way. You can walk completely out of the alley if you wish!
There are Demon Children instead of Clawfingers.
Harry's death sequence is incredibly slow, and has not been set to the correct speed. This means it can take up to 3 minutes before the scene ends.

CAFE SCENE/SILENT HILL
There is no Cybil in the whole of the scene (except the FMV clip)! This means that Harry sits there talking to himself. Cybil's voice has not even been implemented!
The cut-scene where the flying creature bursts through the window doesn't exist.
You only pick up a Kitchen Knife and a map in the Café.
You can leave the Café without collecting anything!
The scene where Harry says "I guess I'll check that alley again" does not exist, it simply just highlights the alley on the map.
Flying Creatures and Dogs do not have skins.
There are strange demon babies strolling around the game (but you already know that ;) ).
You cannot enter the Shop (where you find the Channeling Stone)
At the end of the alley is the torch (flashlight), steel pipe and a map of the school with the words "TO SCHOOL" written on it (plus another mark of Samael on the bottom).
If you walk up to a destroyed road, you can walk on air (although it leads you nowhere and eventually results in the game crashing).
You find the House Key at Matheson Street (instead of the notes "DOGHOUSE", "LEVIN ST".)

THE HOUSE
No doghouse outside house.
The room that normally contains the Katana is unlocked, but if you enter, the game crashes.
The back door has no locks.
There is no map on the wall.
There is no TV.
The table & chairs are missing in the garden.

MIDWICH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
No school bus outside.
Different ambience music.
Reception only features two notes.
"The lock is jammed" message had not been invented. If a room was inaccessible, it would only be locked.
Only the Reception, Courtyard, Clock Tower and toilets are labelled on the map.
The room behind the reception is locked.
The basement and roof floor stairs are blocked off.
Only two classrooms are accessible.
Library and Library Reserve are locked.
The Infirmary is locked.
There are no invisible children.
The room normally full of invisible children (dunno the name) is locked.
The bathrooms are locked.
The slamming locker that normally contains a cat is locked (although the locker still slams. Strange.........).
There are Demon children instead of Clawfingers (again).
The boiler doesn't need to be switched on before you enter the Clock Tower (you can't get to the basement anyway).

ALTERNATE MIDWICH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Alternate School is much shorter compared to the final release version.
The speech when Harry emerges from the Clock Tower is different.
The Cockroaches have no skins.
Storage room is locked.
Hall is locked.
Teacher's Rooms are locked.
Classrooms are locked.
Library and Library Reserve are locked.
Roof and Basement floor stairs are blocked by metal fences.
The Lobby is locked (needs a key).
The body in the locker carries a 'Lobby Key'.
The room behind the Reception is locked.
There is no boss.
The entrances in the Lobby are unlocked, and you can go outside.
As soon as you step outside, the game crashes.

GENERAL EFFECTS
Some different ambience sounds.
Health Drinks do not exist (there are only First Aid kits).
There is no radio.
There is no Handgun or Shotgun
There are no save points.
The slots in the Inventory menu are numbered 1-8.

Yip. The beta was, indeed, very cool. Those demon babies you see were a common enemy, about as common as the dogs. These (alongside the demon children) were the only creatures with active skins. The flying creatures/dogs/cockroaches had no skins at all, they were purely texture.
BTW, this is a European beta, so the Demon Children were originally supposed to be in the game. :)
