Thanks Paul! the steps are the same?
I mean:

Put the iso file and the SHExtract.exe in C:/sh/ex

Then run the SHExtract.exe and put this command:

Code: Select all
cd c:/sh
SHExtract (name of iso) c:/sh/ex

Thanks again ;)

Have to say I've missed visiting here since we discovered everything in the demo. Has this new tool brought anything interesting up?

Oh the good old days of hacking SH demo! :) Not much left to discover now! :( Kind of sad, history is set!

Well, let's see what we've got. There is 3 main versions of the tool, let's list them:

1. old original Silent Hill Files Extractor by HoRRoR_X
Support: PAL - SLES-01514 only
Usage:
Code: Select all
Silent Hill Files Extractor by HoRRoR_X

Code: Select all
Silent Hill data tool.

This program (C) 2014 Charles MacDonald (cgfm2.emuviews.com)

usage: shx <command> <parameters...>
Specify a command with no parameters to get help on use.
Available commands are: view extract unused

3. Updated original Silent Hill Files Extractor by horror_x

  • SLUS-00707 - US, Full Game Beta (v1.0) (NEW)
  • SLPM-86192 - JP, Full Game
  • SLED-01735 - EU, Trial (Demo) Game

Usage:
Code: Select all
Silent Hill Files Extractor by horror_x
http://consolgames.ru/
Usage:
    SHExtract.exe <ISOImage> <OutDir>

---
But, some important info from MartinBiohazard user (he was talking about №1 & №2 extractors):
from here (read his post): viewtopic.php?f=3335&t=436503&start=10
MartinBiohazard wrote:After study in depth the files, I have come to the conclusion that the extracted files with both extractors, are not extracted correctly (no offense intended), the files are extracted along with DUMMY data in the end of each one of them.
MartinBiohazard wrote:Is very important to know how much DUMMY data each file have, so you can calcule how much free space you have to replace files.

So lets test the №3 with MartinBiohazard advice. Firstly extract PAL SLES-01514 retail version with №2 and №3 from the same PAL ISO. Then into the path of: root:/CHARA/CLD2.ILM.

Real size of CLD2.ILM without dummy data is: 6 144 bytes (this was done with hex editing and manual raw data analyse)
Extractor №2 result with CLD2.ILM: 6 400 bytes (trash data detected, same as №1 extractor)
Extractor №3 result with CLD2.ILM: 6 144 bytes - MATCH!

Image

So, YEAH! Horror_x made it! :pirate: He was fix the main trouble of extractor. Now all the files are real. All the sizes are real. No more trash dummy data! More files can be successfully opened without errors because of of distorted chaotic data in the past. So, nothing can keep us from the new progress! ...except laziness :)

Edit: oh, it's my post № 66, this is my lucky number now, or what? ha ha

Thanks Pau! ;) Now it worked-

These are the exact steps for those who don´t know how to use the SHExtractor:

1- Create a new folder in C: and name it: sh

2- Put the game iso and the SHExtract.exe in there.

3- Now open cmd.exe and put the following command line:

cd c:/sh (press enter key)
SHExtract.exe SH1.iso 00707
(press enter key and wait to finish all the files extraction)

4- Done!

Image

NOTE: The name of output folder could be any name, i used 00707 (all game files will be extracted to this folder). Also, the name of the iso could be any name too.

Great news! im going to see what files can be opened without errors.

Btw, another texture to the list, i found that the texture LITL.ILM corresponds to the Incubus fetus emerging from the Incubator corpse:

Oh the good old days of hacking SH demo! :) Not much left to discover now! :( Kind of sad, history is set!

What you've done here is so wonderful, even if this comes to an end you all have much to be proud of. I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for any new findings, however. Silent Hill deserves more respect.

That´s true Roden, you helped us a lot sharing the coordinates codes for all of us in the community, and taking your time to explain us how to use it. Thanks ;) .

Btw, i don´t think that this come to an end, i think if we can find a way to make a ¨level jump code¨ for OPM demo like you said, we could find more interesting things to debate, but we have to figure it out how to make that code.

Also, i hope someday @Anders share with us the ¨75% build¨ or the ¨Review Disc¨ that he owns to make a deep analysis. That would be great for all of us, and a very important piece for the community, but i know and understand how the collectors world is. That 75% build could be very interesting to see.

Also big thanks to @PaulSilentin for all of his admiration he put into modding the game and making wonderfull things.
@MartinBiohazard for all his help with coordinates codes and .ppf patches he released, also the sstates!
@CharlesM & @HoRRoR/horror_x for the greatest sh extractors!

All these discoveries we made with SH Demos, would not have been possible without your help guys! ;)

Hope we can keep finding more stuff in the future and keep alive this game.
And sorry for my English, I hope you have understood everything I've written.

Just checking in as its Halloween, Happy Halloween everyone!

Great work Paul/Giromancy!

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! I also think SH deserves more respect, it's a great little engine, maybe one day we'll see some extensive mods for it so we can keep that SH1 graphic style.

Yes, it's been a great community effort I think, and I hope making a few demo discoveries rekindled interest somewhat. These extractors are definitely the next step forward - then you would not even need that level jump code (but maybe I'll look into it sometime). If I recall someone was working on level/geometry viewer as well? That would be great if it had demo support.

My recent test shows that #3 extractor is not perfect if working with OPM16 iso - wrong directories tree ... i will contact the author for the bug report soon.

That was the Charles MacDonald / CharlesM user
viewtopic.php?f=3335&t=436504

I was sending him PM some time ago:
REVEAL SPOILER
CharlesM wrote:Don't worry, I'll definitely release the tool and documentation. I've been writing open source software for years now and have always shared my work with the public for free. This project won't disappear. And if I lose interest or stop development, I'll release what I currently have so other people can pick up where I left off.

About a public release, I suppose I could do one. But there's still so many things that need to be finished and improved. I think people would find the tool is incomplete and frustrating to use at this point. For example it runs from the command line, and I know some users are only comfortable with GUIs.

To be honest I'm more interested in documenting the data in the game, and the tool is just a way to verify my documentation. I'm sure other people could use my findings and create a much better tool that is easier to use!

Charles

Yeah that would be good, we could explore every 3d level easily, but i think he is making this for retail game only, im not sure at all.

I was going to comment that, i noticed when i extracted all the files from OPM, that the folder TIM has all the files with .bin extension, the same happens with other folders, is like it´s all mixed up.

Great job everyone. Does anyone have the decryptor for 1ST\BODYPROG.BIN? It was uploaded on XeNTaX a while ago, but the original upload appears to be down..

Open decrypted file in HEX editor and scroll down, you will see in-game text, here is visual explanation for this process for better understanding:

Will be awesome! I was always wondering why SH doesn't have it in the PSF library.

Well, i don´t know if anyone has made this before, but i couldn´t find anything here or in the internet.
I just found this site: http://www.silenthillmedia.net/ (Fungo) wich has some sounds effects, but they are all recorded from in-game, so the audio quality is not the best.

Anyway, thanks to the SHExtractor, i could extract ALL the sounds effects from the game with his native format and converted to .wav (I recommend use Windows Media Player to open the audio files)

These files are in the SND Folder, and it have .VAB extensions, each .VAB files contains a lot of tracks inside.

NOTE: There may be some duplicate tracks in some folders (This is because the game uses the same audio in differents levels, but all the sounds are there),

Here is a complete list of .VAB files and each track contained inside:

Almost all the sound effects like (doors, footsteps, creatures etc) are basically in MAP***.VAB folders. The other folders has ambient sounds (Background Music) and some other stuff. The BASE.VAB folder it also has some sounds effects, like Harry breathing, radio static, doors etc.

I had to forced the Sample Rate to: 11025Hz for most of the tracks, however, there are many others that i had to forced to higher or lower level to correct the audio, there may be some audio tracks with incorrect sample rate, but that can be fixed.

Here, you can download all the sounds effects:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30497817/SH_SOUNDS_AMBIENT_EFFECTS/SLUS00707%20SOUNDS-AMBIENT%20EFFECTS.rar

Something i noticed while i was hearing these tracks is that the Background Music in the game are composed with different tracks, then the game plays those tracks simultaneously creating a solid background music, I thought that the music in the game was made with a solid track for each level, i was wrong. :P

Also, the game can create a lot of tones using only one track, this, i think, can be done changing the speed.

I used PSound to open and convert the files to .wav.

By last, there are some beta audio like (COATION.VAB) for example, also inside: MAP702 folder, (Track:00029.wav) you can hear a baby ghost moan, i think that this could be a beta audio used for the Beta Larval Stalker, compared this one with the following audios: 00030.wav - 00031.wav and 00032.wav wich are from demon Childs (Grey Child) and the 00033.wav wich is the final audio for Larval Stalker, compared this two: 00029.wav with 00033.wav and take your own conclusions. There is also another beta audio that i heard but i can´t find it right now, is some kind of howl sound, perhaps used for the dog (groaner) or dog2 (wormhead).

We have found and documented a few of the VAB/KDT names already on both hcs (see my last post in this thread, there is a link to PSF tracks which can be played directly from foobar2000 or Winamp with plugins/components, but that set is not complete) and Silent Hill Heaven (http://www.silenthillforum.com/viewtopi ... start=9999).

TL;DR:
C is the results theme
E is the theme playing when meeting Cybil
E2 is "DOWN TIME"
H is "HEAR NOTHING"
K is "MOONCHILD"
P is "NEVER AGAIN"
R is "CLAW FINGER"
T is "UNTIL DEATH"

Quoted titles are track titles from the OST release (KICA-7950)

Thanks for the link Nisto, looks an interesting thread, im going to take a look later.

Following with your list, here are some more, not sure if all are correct:

B is from alley scene, before first meeting with Cybil at the Cafe.

B2 is from first meeting with Kauffman at the Hospital cut-scene.

D i guess is from Resort Area just right after defeating the Twinfeller.

D2 Is the air (fog) sound used in some parts of the game. Also used in the first FMV when Harry gets out of his car.

E2 is from Harry and Lisa cut-scene in Nowhere, right after Dahlia and Alessa cut-scene in the Amusement Park.

F2 is from sewer scene (2nd time) before go to the Amusement Park.

FIRST Load Game - New Game (main menu) sound.

G is from Floatstinger (moth) fight.

G2 is from first meeting with Lisa in the Alternate Hospital cut-scene.

H is ambient music used in Police Station.

I i guess is from Hospital basement.

K is from Alternate Hospital Basement.

M Used in some parts of Nowhere.

O is from Hidden Altar room in Antique Shop.

I decided to make public research project based on github (i hope that it is not violate the rules):

Image

https://github.com/SILENTpavel/SHresearch
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/SILENTpavel/SHresearch/master/README.md

Most info you will find inside, you will not need to register, you can download the whole project or only needed files with no limits. Interesting thing is - we can make mods for the SH Beta (which is almost full game) and share this modded iso file. Because this is not retail game, so it is available for non-profit sharing with everyone, well almost everywhere. Also i will post more info about SH Beta VS SH USA retail differences later.

(just to be sure: this project is not under my copyright, i'm not trying to assign our overall achievements on myself, sorry if i didn't mentioned someone somewhere)

Giromancy wrote:Well, i don´t know if anyone has made this before, but i couldn´t find anything here or in the internet.

Nice! The sound in SH1 is so dynamic.. from the music to the ambient sounds.. I'll have fun listening to these :D
