Hacking SH1 OPM demo: FF8 puns, no fog, & more!

Linkypoo Major Spoilers!

It started out as a translation project, and they did do some of that. It ended up with finding things such as the "key of Quetzalcoatl" that isn't in the original version of the game.

Image

These are references to Final Fantasy VIII, which came out the year before SH1's release. There's also subsequent keys that confirm this.

The translations, which shouldn't come as a surprise, by Konami in English are also inaccurate. The thing about the dog's head where the woodman key is found is that in the original script they had both "fallen". (More translations are in the above link.)

犬の。。頭が落ちている
A Dog's.. head has fallen
Official English Translation: A dog's head..

[きこり] の鍵 (Key of "Woodman")
民家の庭へ行く扉の鍵 バスケットボールのコートに落ちていた

^ I have no memory of that thread lol.

The person for this version said the real beta version has never been released and all the demos contained differences from each other and the original. Idk how true that is.

Correct. To my knowledge, no one has come forward with a real, playable beta. It has been assumed that certain things in the OPM16 demo contain things left over from the beta, and that's why they're so different, like the images of naked women or the crudely-drawn MS paint lizard boss in the school. Same with screencaps that were published in various magazines, like the red cloth instead of the painting over the altar behind Green Lion Antiques. The OPM demo is the oldest and contains the most crazy shit.

I have a bunch of screencaps and ripped images from that one and other demos here:
http://alchemillahospital.net/gallery/t ... p?album=19

IIRC, Giromancy went through and did comparisons of all the demos a while ago. I did, too, but I lost them when my site went down a year or two ago and now I only have my screencaps.

@Roden, I hope you do. Would you consider looking at the original game Japanese text? I heard there's discrepancies in the English and Japanese, including in the subtitles.

I had no idea you had an account here either! ♡

@J haha I am so putting that on my tumblr!

Most of the interesting translation "oddities" are already from the original game unless I've marked them as JP demo or US trial etc. I got up to the school part last year but didn't progress any further. I'm sure the latter game has tons of interesting stuff, its just finding the time.. I'm working on a video for a different game at the moment.

Yeah I like to hang out here, I follow what nur_ein_tier and so on are up to, they laid the groundwork so I don't tread the same ground with any possible SH discoveries.

That's one of the reasons I made a topic about your work, because I hadn't see it elsewhere.

I understand about managing time. With school, work, social, etc. It's understandable. I haven't done translations per se, but I have edited subtitles on anime before for my channel. Some I replaced with a more accurate translation. It was very time consuming, however, I enjoyed doing it when I had the time.

Yes, precisely. The existing demo coverage I found online before starting did not cover hidden rooms, stages, animations, items and cut-scenes which are inaccessible (i.e. stuff that can't be checked as easily), so a lot of hidden content was missing in that respect.. and while I did my best to unlock these areas, there are still a few (IMO) rooms that haven't been checked in-game. So we need to do a few things such as:

1. Walk through walls (all areas in the demo need to be checked with this - hidden rooms were found in final game so there must be even more in demo? However I haven't hacked this code)
2. Room/stage jump - according to text extracted from the demo (somehow by russian hacker), there exists a debug menu with many rooms (some of them I haven't even been to, and its a certainty the game files do not exist for many rooms, but I'm sure a few still have their room files intact - such as the basketball court perhaps). If we could get into the OPSM's basketball court, maybe we will even see that dog from the beta version featured in one of the Silent Hill guidebooks?
3. In the no fog video you'll see me run around the dog kennel etc, the problem with the way I activated this code is that I can't examine anything like the dog kennel or items or doors. Textures ripped from game indicate there's a placeholder here at the kennel, but we also want to check in-game to see if any scripts are executed (such as animations/in-game text). IMO we need to somehow progress the game from Cheryl's part to the next stage after cafe if possible, and then look at this area. This game ALWAYS surprises me.. just when I think that's all the demo has, I get teleported to some room like nowhere and I'm like WTF :P There might be rooms without such event triggers just waiting to be discovered. If you want to go into more detail, I noticed a lot of hidden areas (which you can't access normally in demo without codes) have minute changes between demo versions which could also be documented (such as the placement of phones on the desk in the 2nd part school).
4. Debug menu - as mentioned above - apparently also contains day/night functions which are easily switchable to on/off.

So yeah still a lot to do I think before we can put this demo away for good.

OK, I was supposed to be doing a video of another game but I quickly did another SH1 movie first! I call this one Hidden Demo Rooms: Adventures in Nowhere.

This is mostly a closer, slower look at some of the later demo's hidden rooms, with more of a playthrough feel towards the end. See how many changes you can spot? :) I've also added no-fog alley, if you were curious..

I actually found out a few new things while playing it (as I always do), such as being able to access all the rooms in the school from "Nowhere" by going through the area where there is no collision detection - very similar to a walk through walls code actually. Though its very difficult to navigate.. you get lost often.

This will probably be my last video for SH1 for a long time I imagine.. Considering checking out SH2/SH3 or finishing the SH1 translation project sometime in the future though.

Some weeks earlier (on assemblergames forum) was updated live links to SH2/3/4 demos and some other rare SH builds. Pretty much hidden things, that can be discovered right now inside. For example i know deleted beta items and Henry model/texture in sh4, still many interesting things locked in the resources of all of 1-4 games, so this is good idea to move on next part of series, i think. Also i can help with SH2 E3 debug menu with all details i know, if needed (link).

Nice! Looks interesting!

Though I don't see anything on assembler about Silent Hill recently? Got a link to the thread?

I haven't played SH4 personally, but interested in SH2 and 3. Not sure when but I'd like to do a comprehensive analysis sometime (similar to SH1 demo) to ensure no-one has missed anything (which is actually surprisingly common for popular games - everyone thinks someone else will do it!).

Hacking SH1 OPM demo: FF8 puns, no fog, & more!

Hey guys,

Good news. This will be my final update for these demos.. I believe I've found 95% of the hidden rooms. I hacked a code that allowed me to put Harry at any co-ordinate, which in turn allowed me to wander around and find the other rooms.

Don't jump Harry!
Image

The OPM demo was both helpful and annoying - its less sophisticated in loading things so it seems to allow events and other rooms to actually load up properly so you can examine stuff, but its annoying because the world collision outside the room just makes you fall very far down so its hard to see where the rooms are.

The 2nd demo (JP trial in my case) has better loading techniques so it doesn't load up the crap of the other rooms as you wander around so much (unfortunately for us), but it has better world collision so you always seem to be level with the rooms.

There are definitely things which are different, and things that may be similar/same to retail. I'm sure you can spot what is different. Actually would appreciate if someone posted those so I don't have to do everything.

Is there more than this still hidden? Yes, maybe a few rooms I'm sure. But you won't find them easily IMO.

OPM cut-scene message - we know these texture backgrounds from ripped data, but did you know the text message and background only work in OPM and not the later trial edition?
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 3d50c6.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 65347d.jpg

New item pickup found - didn't know you could get this key in-game (JP trial):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 3fa6b7.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 29a4ec.jpg
Also in room (not sure if same as retail): http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... d2ee10.jpg

Uber unfinished rooms (JP Trial), these have no textures (I am NOT sure if these ones appear in retail also - they do look similar, let me know):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... ff5f7d.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 8206d3.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 63104b.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... b7f430.jpg

JP trial books:
According to text stream data, the text exists for the ghosts books. Some of it is a little different to final game when I was playing US trial last time, but this is beyond scope of this simple article.
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... b91bca.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 4a57c5.jpg
This book is evil, the other one gives you useless item text description - this one crashes your game:

http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 92197a.jpg

OPM bathroom:

http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 9b03f7.png

JP Trial bathroom (unlike OPM, you can't leave through the door which made me angry as I can't explore the left side of school easily):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... cc8b3b.jpg

JP trial medical room (can't be accessed in demo - I guess this room may exist in OPM too, but good luck finding it heh, had enough trouble with this one):

Harry being a jackass again: http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 618c7e.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 2405cd.jpg

School entrance - can't be accessed in demos:

Quick translation (Cheryl might be here, so its probably best to try searching)
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 9697aa.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 70f7e6.jpg

Big nothing room (JP trial) - in alt world this room is just big and empty, in OPM you fall through the floor. What's here in retail? Honestly can't remember..
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 5e6f2b.jpg

Harry being a jackass:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... a00147.jpg

Rooftop OPM (not sure if this is different to retail or not? looks same to me):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 1dea52.jpg
Same with this one:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... fe407b.png
And this one in ordinary school basement (OPM):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... c43ba2.png

OPM phone room actually exists (does not function at all, no cut-scene or messages):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 791973.jpg

OPM classroom (not sure if same as retail or not?) there's a whole corridor on left side of school filled with classrooms with nothing in them:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... afa28f.png
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 27a535.png
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 1b4c8a.png

This room in the OPM demo (there are about five like this) has no floor collision so you drop straight through to the room floor (I think this is one of the book rooms):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 8b19b0.jpg

OPM bathroom (alt world) - have marked where Harry is - also no floor collision here - no chance to get out to see if teleportation is working:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 8e1691.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... e72187.jpg

I searched for "Leonard" toilet guy in OPM demo - no luck - his room isn't even in the geometry yet - compare map with what Harry is seeing:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... de4435.jpg

Locked (this room is the fan room in alt world) OPM - can't remember how similar this is to retail:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 29c1db.png
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... f19cfd.png

Endgame - this is it folks, the boiler/basement room.. its a fitting end really.. the only true end of the demo. Alt version does not exist in OPM, in OPM can only see ordinary basement and can't go inside. JP trial is different.. first the ordinary:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 684e94.jpg
That switch does nothing (i.e. a text message comes up saying nothing happened).
The valves:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... cf1e07.jpg

Next up the alt:
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... b7dc32.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 5a2e49.jpg
Ammo room (how similar is this to retail anyone know?):
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 5141ea.jpg
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... fae459.jpg

Oh its coming, Harry!
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 2fba40.jpg

Puzzle functions perfectly - well done, Konami. Too bad no-one ever got this far to see it lol.
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af42 ... 993c1e.jpg

The last thing demo Harry will ever see - Harry steps on the elevator, it goes down and fades to black and game crashes. The End! Hope you enjoyed the ride. Want more? Play Silent Hill retail! :)

Hacking SH1 OPM demo: FF8 puns, no fog, & more!

Post by Roden on Thu Jul 17, 2014 8:41 pm

In relation to above post, here are some of the changes I spotted already (I only have retail save at alt school, sorry).

BTW, there were a ton of camera angle changes I won't bother documenting here. The demo camera is quite unpolished and sometimes does crazy cool things at angles and such.

First book - changes here should be obvious:
Image

Demo has a ton more chairs!
Image

Locker is locked message has been REMOVED from retail. Interesting.
Image

Should be obvious, but if you don't see it - they made the elevator much smaller for retail (I always thought it was a little small)
Image

Second book - more burnt books added

Wow, so much new information. I would like to have enough free time to compare all this to retail version. But seems like nothing incredibly new here, just "changed amount of chairs/books", anyway this is unique stuff, thanks!

Purramid_Head wrote:These are references to Final Fantasy VIII, which came out the year before SH1's release. There's also subsequent keys that confirm this.

Key of "Garuda"
Key of "Bahamut"
Key of "Sphinx"
Key of "Ifrit"
Key of "Quetzalcoatl"

Those are not references to FF VIII, those names are mythological gods names:

GARUDA:
Image
The Garuda (Sanskrit: गरुड़ garuḍa) is a large mythical bird, bird-like creature, or humanoid bird that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Garuda is the mount (vahana) of the Lord Vishnu. Garuda is the Hindu name for the constellation Aquila. The Brahminy kite and Phoenix are considered to be the contemporary representations of Garuda.[1] Indonesia adopts a more stylistic approach to the Garuda's depiction as its national symbol, where it depicts a Javanese eagle (being much larger than a kite).

BAHAMUT:
Image
Bahamut or Bahamoot (/bəˈhɑːmuːt/ bə-HAH-moot; Arabic: بهموت‎ Bahamūt) is a vast fish that supports the earth in Arabian mythology. In some sources, Bahamut is described as having a head resembling a hippopotamus or elephant. In Arabic myth, Bahamut is a giant fish acting as one of the layers that supports the earth. In Jorge Luis Borges' Book of Imaginary Beings, Bahamut is "altered and magnified" from Behemoth, and described as so immense that a human cannot bear its sight; "[all] the seas of the world, placed in one of the fish's nostrils, would be like a mustard seed laid in the desert."

SPHINX:
Image
A sphinx (Arabic: أبو الهول, Greek: Σφίγξ /sphinx/, Bœotian: Φίξ /Phix) is a mythical creature with, as a minimum, the body of a lion and a human head. In Greek tradition, it has the haunches of a lion, sometimes with the wings of a great bird, and the face of a human. It is mythicised as treacherous and merciless. Those who cannot answer its riddle suffer a fate typical in such mythological stories, as they are killed and eaten by this ravenous monster. This deadly version of a sphinx appears in the myth and drama of Oedipus. Unlike the Greek sphinx which was a woman, the Egyptian sphinx is typically shown as a man (an androsphinx). In addition, the Egyptian sphinx was viewed as benevolent, but having a ferocious strength similar to the malevolent Greek version and were both thought of as a guardian often flanking the entrances to temples.

IFRIT:

The Efreet (also ifrit) (afreet, afrit, or afrite, Arabic (male) ʿifrīt/عفريت or (female) ʿifrītah/عفريتة) was a demonic fire spirit from Arabian and Islamic mythology. It was classified as being an evil type of Djinn or Genie, from a class of infernal jinn (spirits below the level of angels and devils) noted for their strength and cunning. Furthermore, mythology depicted an ifrit as an enormous creature of fire and smoke, either male or female, who lives underground and frequents ruins.

QUETZALCOATL:

Quetzalcoatl was one of the most important figures in the traditional mythologies of Mesoamerica. As deity, culture hero, or legendary ruler, Quetzalcoatl appeared in some of the region's most powerful and enduring stories. He represented life, motion, laughter, health, sexuality, and the arts and crafts of civilization, such as farming, cooking, and music. The name Quetzalcoatl means "Feathered Serpent." It brings together the magnificent green-plumed quetzal bird, symbolizing the heavens and the wind, and the snake, symbolizing the earth and fertility. Quetzalcoatl's name can also be translated as "precious twin," and in some myths, he had a twin brother named Xolotl, who had a human body and the head of a dog or of an ocelot, a spotted wildcat.

So, at first, those keys had the names of Mythological Gods, then, for some reason the developers changed those names to the seven Olympian spirits (in wich only five names appear in the game):

ARATRON: (or Arathron), "The alchemist who commanded seventeen million six hundred and forty thousand spirits". He rules 49 provinces. His planet is Saturn.

BETHOR: "Who commanded twenty-nine thousand legions of spirits". He rules 42 provinces. His planet is Jupiter.

PHALEG: (or Phalec, Pharos), "The War-Lord". His planet is Mars. He rules 35 provinces.

OCH: "The alchemist, physician, and magician". He rules 28 provinces. His "planet" is the Sun.

HAGITH: "Transmuter of metals, and commander of four thousand legions of spirits". He rules 21 provinces. His planet is Venus.

OPHIEL: "Who commanded one hundred thousand legions of spirits". He rules 14 provinces. His planet is Mercury.

PHUL:: "Lord of the powers of the moon and supreme lord of the waters". He rules 7 provinces. His "planet" is the Moon.

Thanks. Yeah its good to know its all (mostly) covered and documented now somewhat. One last change I noticed is that some of the doors which are "jammed" in the alt school are completely missing from the demo. This shows they maybe originally intended for doors to disappear rather than be jammed.

For the "FF summon names" - my take on it (and I think I mentioned this somewhere before), at first I thought they were mythology-related names but now I think they're more of placeholder - it's too much of a coincidence that every one of those names has appeared in a FF game, while the ones they chose in the end have not. But who knows :)
