Best kind of TV to play Silent Hill on?

Post by smoke on Thu Aug 09, 2012 6:07 pm

I made the switch to HD back in 2009 and the newer consoles like PS3 look great but older games like this look pretty bad. I tried an old crt SDTV from 2001 but it didn't look very good. Part of the problem might be that I'm playing it on the PS3 since I don't have a PS1 and I heard it looks better since it's the real thing and not emulation. So what's yall's favorite TV to play older games like this on? Also what's the best system to play it on, PS1, PS3, PC emulator?

First off, welcome to the forum :).

Well, depends. To get the absolute best image quality for a PS1 game, you'd have to play it on an emulator like ePSXe with special plugins and such. Check out this topic I made with a bunch of sample screens a while back: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=432803

I played SH1 quite a few times on various SDTV's and HDTV's. It looked just a tad bit better on the HDTV's since I played on a PS3, but the bottom line is that the visuals won't look that great no matter what you do since that's just the way they look. Playing on an HDTV is basically stretching the original 320x240 framebuffer render out to whatever your TV's native resolution is, which is never that great.

ePSXe on the other hand, can natively and internally render at much higher resolutions as well as increase things like texture resolution and other rendering methods, such as even getting rid of jaggies via various forms of anti-aliasing. If you're playing on a PS3, you'd wanna use either component cables or HDMI cables for the best image quality, but there's only so much even that will.

The best way to play SH1 without the emulator would be on an old-school CRT tv which had an s-video port, as then you could get the best signal a PS1 could output.

My 65" wide screen seems to work just fine. When it comes to TV's and video games the bigger the better is my rule of thumb. Not saying you want some big piece of shit, but something big that is at least 1080i or better is the best route to go. However the 1st SH is probably only compatible with 480 or maybe 720p I don't know for sure. It would obviously play on a TV that was 1080i or 1080p but the resolution would not reflect that, it will only be in the resolution the game was made for, sense there is no Silent Hill 1 in HD.

I play it on my 40" TV on my PS3 and it looks fine. Just make sure that it’s set to the original aspect ratio (press the PS button).

I play mine now on a 46" Sony LCD through my PS2. I have the PS2 set to 4:3 and the input on the TV set to 4:3 Full. (I didn't like the way it looked with the PS2 set to 16:9, and the game was made in 4:3, so that's what I play it in.) It looks fine to me. I don't think that you are going to really make it any much better.

Has anyone played the PSN version? I don't have a PS3. I'm curious if it's exactly the same, or is it stretched?

Thanks :)

Gotta say I'm pretty blown away by those pics. Never thought SH could look like that. I don't have a computer right now but when I get one I'll dl that epsxe for sure. Any of you ever hook your laptop up to your TV and play it like that? I bet it would look even better that way.

I tried component cables on an old tube tv and even that didn't look too good. I dunno how yall are getting good vid quality on your HD TVs, On mine it looks really grainy and you can't see much detail unless you're like a few feet away from something.

It'd definitely look nice if you played ePSXe on your TV via a laptop. I hooked my friend's laptop up to my TV once via HDMI -- was pretty nice.

You might have to calibrate your TV's built-in settings til you find a nice middle ground for the quality. PS1 games rendered at 240p (320x240) and some TV's can't display this image over composite/component cables since they don't support anything lower than 480i/p signals. The TV's that do support that res are actually converting the signal on the fly by upscaling it to 480i/p. Just something extra that I forgot to add.

That isn't a problem if you're playing on PS3 since the PS3 can do that either way with it's built-in upscaler. The conversion issue can appear on PS1's and PS2's.

I have the PSN version, it’s the same game. By default, it’s stretched, but if you press the PS button there’s a setting which allows you to change the aspect ratio.

Did you go to the "Welcome to Silent Hill" section of the forum and introduce yourself? Cause I at least check that forum once every few days to greet new members.

I guess this is better late than never.....Hello and welcome to the SH Community. Everyone hear is really nice and if you have any questions feel free to ask. I'll be looking forward to your posts.

What SH games do you like? Do you have a favorite one or two?

Do you feel better now "Deadalux", I feel bad that know one welcomed you but the only thing I could think of is you forgot to introduce yourself to everyone when you joined the community.

Yeah, I think that's what happened. Our warm, albeit late welcome seems to have fallen on deaf ears though -- Deadalux already ragequit the forum. Though I can't take any pity on him -- if you could've seen the reason why he left, you'd feel the same way lol.

Rage quit the forum??? Did I miss something here? :?:

Never mind I looked into a few of his last posts, he seemed pretty pissed and was pointing the finger at Purr quite a bit, saying that were all a tight knit community that is pretty much just closed minded, (which is just not true at all) here are a few sections from some of the last comments he left:

Deadalux wrote:All you guys are all just a big family here and I'm just an intruder. You all think the same and you all agree but not with me so w/e. I said what I got to say. If anyone else wants to help back me up on this, maybe persuade you guys to start accepting that I may be on to something then great. But if not, I'm out.

I just keep pointing out my opinion. I didnt start having an attitude until people started gettign aggressive with me. I'm a lonely bastard and I come on this site to share my views. I guess I should just give up, too. If i dont have anyone else agreeing with my ideas, which are totally reasonable, then I'm just going to have to leave.

Purramid Head thinks this and that. Purramid Head think that they're responding to typical fanboys.
But Purramid Head doesn't realize the truth that is in front of their eyes. I see Devilhunter and Purramid head making a lot of assumption and talking a lot of trash but so far they haven't taken any sort of stance on this matter.

You want to devote your life to a company that tells you what to like just because it has Silent Hill?
Purramid Head is the type of member who would honestly try to persuade you that A Silent Hill game about eating cake with monsters and prancing through open fields of grass and flowers with Pyramid Head would be a Silent Hill game. Just because it has Silent Hill logo, it must be quality. Fuck that. You guys make me LOL at least I have a genuine personality and a sense of humor.

I honestly think I should just give up on this series. It's too late. Silent Hill had its time but its over. No one else understands how a silent Hill game is supposed to work and all the fans just accept whatever is given to them so w/e. have your modern silent hill and I'll go stay in my hole with my old games being all butt hurt.

nah man, its over for me. I dont belong here obviously. I don't care if I'm banned. Banning me doesn't prove that I'm wrong. It only proves that I did something that none of you were willing to understand.

I haven't been a member here for very long and have a really hard time believing that any of us on here are closed minded people. Sure everyone is up for a good debate from time to time but who isn't? That is one aspect of this site and these forums that makes them so good,(is being able to talk and debate certain topics on here with other members). Everyone I've met on here has been nothing but nice and I have enjoyed talking to a lot of you on here. I've even sent PM's to Purr on multiple occasions and even though she is a moderator and it is her job to enforce the rules of the site among other things. She has always been there for me with what ever I have needed and has always been really nice & a total sweetheart. I just don't see it? I think some people are just hard to get along with and there is no pleasing them. I never talked to "Deadalux" personally but one of his obvious "glaring" personality traits is not being able to take criticism well and the needing to be right about his views and opinions on things. It's to bad if he did leave for good, cause this is a great community and forum with a lot of wonderful, intelligent people on here. I look at it as his loss not any of ours. That is all I wanted to say...."I love you guys and enjoy being here and a part of the community"!!!

Mike ;)

Much love Mike!

Yeah, Dead couldn't have been more wrong with his assessment that we're all too close-minded because we didn't agree with his oftentimes ridiculous claims. He wasn't here for too long which is why he apparently didn't realize that we're all far from close-minded. I've seen (and sometimes directly participated in) soo many debates and discussions where tons of people disagreed with each other, it's not even funny. I've been here for a little over a year now. Most times people who disagreed with each other did so in a calm, civil manner, though there are times when threads would get locked due to disarray.

But hey, that comes with the territory. Sucks for him, because this is the best SH-related forum on the internet. There's a lot of cool people here and tons of awesome information archived here. If he didn't have such a flawed outlook and perception of others, he probably would've seen that.

Not to beat a dead horse, but just wanted to go back to the original question. I play all ps 1 or 2 games on my old 23 inch orion tv. I have a backwards compatible PS3 that plays the older games. You're right, the older games don't look right on HDTV. With the 4:3 aspect ratio, it just looks better, and the quality looks best too. An old game like sh1 looks especially bad on my computer monitor, which is a widescreen 27 inch. This causes me problems, because if I want to play an old game, I have to rehook up to my tv, but all new games I play on my computer monitor thru HDMI. Anyway, I digress...my advice would be get a bigger older tv and just use that with a ps1 or 2. About 50 people probably already said that, but there's my ten cents. Cheers
In Heaven's Night having a few...

I've done just fine with my old small TV that I have hooked up to my PS2. I have no problems and the quality is just fine to me. I personally don't need all that HD crap to have a good experience with the older games. When it comes to my PS3 and 360, I have those hooked up to the large plasma screen, and I do have to say I love it for the newer games (I don't have a backwards compatible PS3 and I won't by the old games from the PSN since I already have them for the PS2). But the small tv doesn't bother me any either. I'm not that picky when it comes to TVs.

Hello. I personally enjoy playing games on television sets of comparable years. That said, Silent Hill came out in '99, so a TV set from 98-2002 would suit me best :) ... Last time I played it, it was on a 27inch Toshiba CRT, TV from '05.
