Golly this game is horrific! :?. Im in the hospital & I find myself having to pause the game every so often to keep my nerves in check :). The place is down right disturbing & u truly feel isolated. Im actually thankful when doors are locked so I can't see whats on the other side!. They position the enemies right in front of the opposite side of the door as well lol. I freaked out when I saw a doctor. The games graphics definitely give it a freaky asthetic. Im playing through SH1 & 2 atm for the 1st time & im at the hospital in BOTH games .

Alas I will man up & soldier through my nerves simply because I have fallen in love with this series & I want to finish SH1 before I start SH3. I bought a PS2 to experience SH1-4 for myself & i've not been disappointed. These games are without doubt the pinnacle of survival horror in any medium 8-)

Haha I know how you feel. Samw way I felt the first time I played it. It's the scariest game in the series in my opinion.

I thought SH games were the pinnacle of survival horror but then I played Amnesia....oh man...

Eh, I didn't get what all the fuss was about with the first game. Not really scary at all to me. :V

It's nice that people can still play it for the first time and still be scared today, though. Is a testament to how well it works. If only it worked for me.

I did a recent playthrough, and the game still scared me. The atmosphere, the graphics, the torture dungeon looking environments, random noises, etc. all contribute to feelings of fear for me. I found that I had to stop playing every couple of hours.

Ah man, if only I had the nerves of steel that I used to have back then! I used to play this one and the second (maybe the third, too) late into the night, like until 2:00 in the morning when you get a natural sense of isolation in the world. Nowadays, it gets to be 7:00 in the evening, and its time to shut it off.

I'm glad you're finding this game to be so good. I think it's still the best in the series.

You know, you're so right. My nerves are so bad compared to how they were when I was younger.

For me the scariest part was when I enter the hospital. When ever I enter it,My heartbeat begins to rise.

The first time I started playing the hospital area was during one of those 2:00 am sessions, and after the first nurse appeared and I slew her in and adrenaline frenzied panic, I decided it was time to pick it back up the next day instead. They really nailed the build-up to that point.

The hospitals are always my favorite locations in the games. The hospitals, the Sanitarium, and the Orphanages.

They are my favorites, but they are also the most nerve wracking for me.

What's wrong with Downpour? It's generally well received.

Also, nothing prevents them from playing SH 1.

Nothing, but its likely its the closest they'll get to a true SH experience.

Haha, this. I remember my first time playing through, I was up all night in the living room and would jump whenever the dog moved around or the wind blew. ^_^

At least for those with a PS3, there's nothing stopping them, since it's like $5 on PSN, and that's not even mentioning piracy, and people have been pirating it for over a decade, too.

I got Silent Hill via PSN for dirt cheap. The hard copy is selling for like one hundred dollars. Something crazy like that. Yay for PSN!

The hospital scares me a lot in SH1. The sewers suck too.

I feel you, the scariest parts of SH1 for me are 1.) Midwich, especially when it changes to the alternate school, 2.) alternate hospital, 3.) nowhere. Out of all of them I think the alternate hospital is by far the worst as far as the scare factor goes, alternate midwich is a close second.
REVEAL SPOILER
nowhere is scary but is basically just like the alternate hospital.
That's my opinion anyways.

Mike ;)

I can easily say that SH1 is the scariest to me. It has all of the atmospheric horror that the series has, but it's much more in your face in every aspect. It has all the elements of fear you would need and it's one of the only titles where the enemies will help each other to defeat you. The first time I played, I was always on edge (and keep in mind, this was by no means my first horror game nor my first or even second Silent Hill game). I've tried listening to the soundtrack before bed as well and that just doesn't work out. haha

Since I went through being too scared to continue with SH2, I'd recommend using a guide if it's that bad. That's what I did with SH2 (thanks, nur!), which removed some of the exploration but put my mind enough at ease to play.

Im not scared anymore ^^. Im at 'Nowhere' & I suppose i've grown accustomed it. The enemies are very easy to kill, even on Hard difficulty. The puzzles however.. thats another challenge completely. I have my Vita on standby to guide me through such complexities ;).
