No offense to SH1, it's a really scary game, but if you really want to be scared download the game "Slender". It's a freeware game so it doesn't cost anything to download. It's available on both the PC & Mac. If you would like to download it just go to the Slender website, there will be links there.

you know, I got stalled out a few times when I was a youngun as well. This was one of very few games that scared me so much I had to stop. Fatal Frame 2 and Clocktower were two others

It's not that scary imo. Even when I really wanted it to be.

That's cool, not everyone is scared of the same things, you said Fatal Frame was scary, which I totally agree with you there. I've played all 3 of them except the new one that just came out. I think Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly was the scariest of those 3. Then on the other hand the Clock Tower games are not scary at all. The first 2 put me to sleep (point and click games aren't my thing) and the 3rd one (which was the best in the series, in my opinion) was at the most, mildly scary. It didn't make me jump once while playing it. I actually really like Clock Tower 3 and have beaten it multiple times, it's just not very scary. That's just my opinion, you might not think Slender is scary but I guarantee you for every 1 person who doesn't think it's scary, there are a handful of people who do.

SH1 scares me the least of all the games, except for Shattered Memories. But I love the feel of it -- it's so iconic and memorable, really bare and surreal, but awesomely so.

Those squeaking black ghost babies freak me out, though. They get me every time. :3

I really dig the puppet nurses. They use to scare the crap out of me the way they groan when you hit them. I've played SH1 so many times now that it's hard to get too scared at any of it now. However, still to this day when ever I see those nurses and I'm playing late at night I'll still get a good chill.

Silent Hill 3 scared me the most now that I've thought about this. Then Silent Hill is a close second. Those puppet nurses creep me out.

SH3 has a great atmosphere -- I have to say that. It's my least favorite of the entire series, though. :/ Lots of reasons for that.

Even the puppet doctors are creepy but if I remember right there is only a small hand full of them, where there's a ton of those puppet nurses scattered throughout the hospital and nowhere for that matter.

Yeah, the puppet doctors are pretty creepy too. But I only remember fighting like one, and this was on a recent playthrough, which is fresh in my mind.

I'm interested in why, but I'll just PM you about it.

I recently played through it also, I think there is actually 2 of them. Once you take the elevator up to the 4th floor in the hospital at the being of the "nightmare hospital". If you run down to the 1st floor there will be one right as you get to the bottom of the steps, and the other one is in the next section of the 1st floor once you go through the double doors. I think there actually might be 2 of them on that side through the double doors, for a total of 3. The reason I remember this is because I love the emergency hammer, and once it turns to the "nightmare hospital" I almost always run down to the basement first to grab that bad ass hammer.

I too am a huge fan of the emergency hammer. This recent playthrough was my first playthrough, so I didn't rush down to get it.

Yeah, there really aren't that many doctors.

Its a shame the PSN version doesn't have the kids in the school. They were iconic to me when I was younger & really freaked me out. Them things with claws just ain't the same :(

I heard about that. I'm playing it on an emulator which left the children in the game. I couldn't imagine playing it with them removed, I don't think it would feel right. That is a shame, stupid censorship. It's because it depicts killing kids right? That is why they decided to remove them? Oh, they replaced them with those Mumbler things....that's too bad. How lame is that!!!

After playing the game so long, it doesn't scare you as much, but some things truly never change. Recently got done playing through the sewers again, and man, the atmosphere in that place is so friggin' oppressive. The soundtrack, the immense darkness the drips of water, the occasional sound in the distance of the Hanged Scratchers falling or coming toward you (and they're FAST on Hard mode), etc.

Awhile back, someone on a Silent Hill walkthrough on YouTube asked, "why is there always a sewer level or something underground?!" I, being the geek I am for storytelling tropes, explained that these underground places, or the Dark Cave, are meant to signify a descent into the protagonist's subconscious and generally be their lowest point. But I mentioned that, in a way, this game is a little different since the whole town is pretty much that Dark Cave. Still, I think it works pretty well even then, like the idea of making it a sewer to signify Harry's mind being set on getting to the lake, so you always hear the water. Stuff like this just makes the experience better for me now that I'm older and can try to make connections between the story and the more physical elements being shown. Also, it helps that, even in real life, the creepiest creatures always lurk in the dark caves of the world.

What's funny is that I had to stop for a bit before taking on the Resort area right after. It still freaks me out the most out of anything in the game. Rompers galore (and one of those bastards killed me in one jump), the creepy-as-hell soundtrack of screeches in the distance, and then the alternate resort area with the painful journey to the lighthouse. It kind of feels a little more climactic than the Nowhere world, in the sense that stuff really starts getting thrown at you here, both in terms of plot elements and monsters.
Fear the Floatstinger... for it floats, and has a stinger.

The sewers are bad, and there probably my least favorite place to go through in the whole game. I just want to run through them and get it over as quick as possible. It seems like when ever I try to stop and fight in there I end up getting my ass handed to me. I'll be shooting or swinging away at one and then there will be one that always comes up from behind me and gets a hold of me. Then the one in the front gets it's shots in, then I'm dead. I don't even bother anymore, I run through all of them now. Only killing ones that completely block my path on those little ledges. The sewers are definitely creepy though, I think it would be worse if your radio actually did work down there. Then you'd have a good mix of noises, static, etc.

I've finally finished the game & recieved the bad ending. It was a bit weird tbh. Like Harry went through all this shit to track down his daughter
REVEAL SPOILER
taking him to schools, hospitals, sewers & nightmarish versions of them only for his daughter to vanish right in front of him the minute he finally reaches her. Along the way hes encountered demon babies, nurses, doctors & other freakish creatures.

On top of this hes seen both of his friends become possessed (1 of which he had to murder) & finally shooting his own daughter to exercise the demon from within. Im thinkin this was the point of the bad ending, to snatch ur child away from u forever in spite of ur efforts. It felt very anti-climatic but was certainly a very cruel conclusion towards the story 8-)

I totally know what you mean, I don't personally like the BAD or BAD+ endings. Obviously the best ending is the GOOD+ ending. If you ever play through it again just make sure to do all of the Kaufman side quest and make sure and save Cybil with the red liquid. This will ensure you getting the GOOD+ ending, which is way better, plus it's a happy ending.

Who's Kaufman? I don't think I'll ever complete it again tbh. Towards the end the game started to wear on me. I didn't find it particularly scary after a while. The enemies are very weak & don't pose a threat thats probably why. The whole cult stuff wasn't my cup of tea either. Its a great game but the others are more easier on the eye.

Kaufman is a doctor you encounter when you first get to the hospital. There is a cut seen where you meet him. Anyways, once you get out of the sewers and your in the resort town there are 3 places you need to go in order to accomplish the "Kaufman side quest". However it's not important if you didn't like the game and are not going to play it ever again. I'm sorry you didn't really care for it. I think it's my favorite out of the whole series, but that is just my opinion. It's definitely not the game with the best graphics, that's for sure. For me, I don't think the graphics needed to be great cause I feel the game delivered on so many other levels that it didn't matter. Well at least your done playing it now and you can go back to playing SH2 or which ever ones it is you like.

If nothing else, you can walk away now saying you've played and beat SH1, right?

Mike ;)
