In history? I don't ever recall an exact year, but I always assumed it was some time in the 1990s given the age of the cars around Silent Hill. But according to a source, they took place in 1983. True or false?

There's various timelines floating around in the fanbase, and the most popular one has 1983 as the date. A lot of the dates were never officially confirmed, but deduced through many memos, documents (both in-game and our world like the BoLM), and statements from the games themselves. SH1 definitely didn't take place in the 90's, it had to have been either the late 70's or early-to-mid 80's.

Well, Alessa was born in 1969 according to her page on the Silent Hill wikia and a few other sources. Not sure where that is stated officially. She was 14 during the events of Silent Hill, so 1983 would be accurate.

Ah interesting. Seems the movie got it more accurate with the setting then. All the abandoned vehicles and machinery left around in the movie is from the 1960s and 1970s, whereas in the game it was 1980s through late 1990s.

I think it's more that that 60s is a setting more obviously different from today, therefore it's easier to note the contrast.

All those boxy, bulky, ugly old cars Harry sees sitting around do bring to mind cars from the 70s/early 80s.

There's an interesting website that compiles screenshots of and identifies cars from video games. Click here for the link to SH1 machinery. Its all user-based too, so some of the ones that are less easy to identify can be discussed by the users.

I discovered a few of my own.

James' car is a 1978 Chevy Nova.

The pickup truck seen in the first Downpour trailer was a 1948 Ford Pickup.

Nice matchup! James' car is a total Malaise era beater... Not sure who had the cooler ride though, the big Chrysler LeBaron that Douglas drove or the Peterbilt 359 Travis used.

The first timeline created, mine in 2004, pegged SILENT HILL's events as 1983. The later developers seemed to agree.

1983 + 17 yrs. (Heathers age in SH3) = 2000. SH3 took place in 2003. It's more likely that SH1 took place in 1986. Never trust Wiki

I could go there right now and change Alessa's age to 42 during the events of SH1 and slip in that Harry was a famous pole dancer in Prague, where he met his wife, Mary, who was killed by James by jealousy.

^...Which would then be swiftly changed back by anyone remotely paying attention. Yes, the Wiki can be freely edited, but there are plenty of people like keep the facts straight. :V

ORIGINS: 1976
SILENT HILL: 1983
SILENT HILL 2: 1991
SILENT HILL 3: 2000
THE ROOM: 2001
HOMECOMING: 2007
DOWNPOUR: 2011

Wasn't 2 pegged as 1994?

It was uncanny enough when Silent Hill featured the air raid sirens for the shift to the otherworld because when I was a kid, the air raid tests scared me to the point that one day when I was riding my bike down the sidewalk and the siren test boomed, I dropped the bike, ran home and hid under a table.

Konami's official Silent Hill: Homecoming site has a pdf document stating Origins took place in 1976, and SH1 in 1983. That's why the wiki gives those dates.

I'm an admin on the SH wiki, and it always burns me when someone tries to act like wikis are all havens for bullshit, and are run by incompetent morons. Anyone who tried to edit in the crap that user was talking about would be banned quite swiftly.
