i need your advice

Post by heyhey on Tue Jan 08, 2013 6:38 pm

a few days ago i decided to start playing SH2, 3, 4, i finished SHD and SHH this summer so i thought it wouldn't be so hard to walk through them, i was completely wrong
i started with SH4 because i knew it is not as scary as the others but now i'm just scared to play it, it might be caused by my early experience in these games, when i was a child (like 11 or 12) i used to play SH2 and SH4, then i just quited playing them due to having no clue how to go further in the game
i know it may seem ridiculous but when i think of these invulnerable ghosts in subway and creepy apartments it frightens me off
that's odd i have no fear of playing SHD, SHH or any other horror game such as dead space, fear, siren, etc

why should i do?
your advice would be greatly appreciated

Overcome yo' fears and smack some monsters in the face with a stick and run the hell away from the ghosts. You'll get through it.

Silent Hill has the best effect when you're scared. That's when it's best played! The goal is to make you scared, but just also remember that it's only a video game. It's not real and nothing of what you see can get you. XD

It's all psychological, first you must calm yourself down.

-Remember that your paranoia has not confirmed your fears and are irrational thoughts.

- If you got lost in the woods and you freak out, it will make it even worse on you than if you calm yourself down.

-Keep the lights on.

-Play in the day time.

I got this way with SH2 after beating SH3 numerous times. I was literally unable to play the game for months because of how terrified I got. I ended up using a strategy guide (alchemillahospital.net has good, spoiler-free guides; that's where I got mine) and it was actually manageable. If I were you though, I'd only use that if you're scared to the point where you're completely immobile. If you're able to push yourself a little, you should try to go without. Whenever you need a break from the fear, use the apartment to take a breather.
ya fuckin rite

Play it in the company of a friend. That might help mitigate some of the fear. You can share the laughs after the scares.
Good luck. You'll make it. You're going down a trail many of us have tread once or more before. ^^

It isn't a dream, you only heard yourself
The means of your life, create and melt
In front of you, beneath closed lids
The path to freedom, Nirvana, here sits

You don't know fear until you play Bubsy 3D.

I say use this fear as an opportunity to get the most out of the games, they are horror games after all ;)

SH4 is the scariest of the franchise in my opinion.

What I did was take it slow. I tried to kill each creature you encounter (unless you are being pursued by walter or are overwhelmed by them) one by one, running away and coming back if I had to. I also tried to separate them from one another, i.e. get the attention of one monster and kill that first in an isolated part of the screen before proceeding to the other.
(This isn't the most practical of advice as it is very time consuming).

I also lessened my fear by immersing myself in the story a lot more. I found this game to have very unique characters and a great story so I tried predicting in advance where the plot was leading and focusing on that. This keeps you busy and your mind working, making you less likely to be scared.

Also play with a friend, lights on, in daytime, etc. And if you aren't against spoilers perhaps you could watch a walkthrough of the game on youtube to help you be prepared in advance.

Also just let yourself get scared! It happens to everyone. That's what this franchise is about! Once you get used to it you will find it won't be a problem for you.
