I think that's because when people develop their own personal conviction, after perceiving a spiritual or personal affirmation, they become unwavering in their stance.
Their personal faith extends beyond what is entailed in their respective dogma, especially if they are opting for a liberal stance on their religion (which is become increasingly popular these days).

But I think it's important to keep in mind that religious doctrines and texts are historical pieces, and therefore written by men.
It may not be the ultimate truth and could be skewed, so just because someone is well-versed in religious literature/history it doesn't mean they have any greater claim over a person who has a personal conviction in their religion.
