SpaceHey.com

Post by admin »

I have been told that it is a better social media for writers, artists, people who aren't assholes, etc. so I made a profile here, feel free to add me:

https://blog.spacehey.com/internetkindness

I also saw some tutorials on customizing profiles which i will add later when im done working, but it is basically a MySpace clone with some differences and no pesky FB/Twitter type algorithms to make me upset.

Also made a silent hill community group:
https://groups.spacehey.com/silenthill

Where I will eventually post stuff but I have a lot on my plate right now lol. But if you decide to join SpaceHey, please also join my silent hill group! :robbie:

What I posted on my Facebook to explain this madness to my fb friends:

But yeah, increasingly, it seems that the reason I stayed on Facebook was the network effect. People I want to talk to are on here. But again, I don't like the creepiness of the site itself, as Jaron Lanier puts it, sure, it enables people to communicate with each other, but it's always being financed by some third party with unknown intentions. Your actual personal data is being bought and sold. The mental health implications of these types of social media, with the targeted advertising and harmful algorithms, make you feel stuck here. That's why I made a SpaceHey account 8 months ago and then never updated it until yesterday, because I felt stuck and trapped on Facebook, but I realize it doesn't necessarily have to be that way. If the people go to a site that more human-oriented, where the postings are chosen by humans rather than algorithms for the most part, where you see the content that you sign up to see (fanpages and groups and such) rather than Facebook wanting page/groups owners to pay to allow the "fans" or said groups/pages to see them in their feed, we could actually go back to a more mentally healthy internet community. It can't happen overnight, and it won't happen for everyone, because it means doing the work of going there and trying to bring other people with you. But this is actually the sort of thing Jaron Lanier (father of virtual reality and all that) said we should be doing: moving to places that don't make assholes out of us. It's not entirely our fault that Facebook can make us angry, it's because the algorithms don't have a moral code at all. But it's been shown, time and time again, that the way FB is currently being run is detrimental to society and, because it is so profitable and easy to use, and everyone's locked into it (see Jaron Lanier's book about social media, or videos of his talks on YouTube), that people tend to stay stuck in it. Change takes work. I will be making YouTube videos explaining this and hopefully working with some others to try to create more of an art and writing community over on SpaceHey, since Facebook is not the ideal place for these things. I will keep posting here, but I don't make any promises as to whether or not I will look at my newsfeed. I'm already over it. It's like the time I took 6 months off or whatever, I feel great. I will use FB and Twitter for site promotion and such, but I will not get sucked into the doomscrolling and general nastiness of the site. Just making a SpaceHey profile felt wonderful to me, such a breath of fresh air compared to this place. Seeing what I want to see, not what unknown possibly harmful advertisers are paying to have me see, or what FB's algorithms have decided should go viral (it's usually depressing stuff). I want to be on a social media site that's actually life-affirming and full of people who just want to share art and writing, not hate each other.

Kinda retro this spacehey. I read that it was created by a startup, and I understood they work on mythical past of Internet. My first impression is sort of "remake" of an old fashioned social media.

I tend to think the real change should be the model, and we should go ahead, not backwards. I think I should pay for my space in social media and have a different kind of relationship with the companies behind or nothing will change.

Just thoughts...

Have you tried Deviant Art?

It's only going into the past visually, it's a retro skin on the same concept as so many social media sites. So the way I see it is: we started off okay on the internet with ways to post and contact folks, then we added troublesome stuff because it's more profitable for large corporations, and now we should strip out the troublesome stuff.

Sometimes the way forward is back, as Mick Jagger said in the film "Performance."

Especially if it means giving more control to the users, i am all for it. More customization, control of what you see and when you see it. And it'll help me remember things like html and css so I can further customize SHC, because it's been so long since I've had to design websites I don't hardly know how to do it anymore. We've given up personalization and control for ease of use and to allow large companies to make huge profits on our data by manipulating us.

I've been on deviantart for a while but couldn't get into the culture of it.

Well... for some reason I am keeping open this space. Maybe I'll give a shot.

I am getting out of a bad time developing. I tuck a job because, you know, the money, but mostly I was needing to work. I did a bad evaluation of the job and was really really hard to rewrite an old abandoned website, PHP 5 to 7, plain JavaScript to ECMAScript6 object oriented and some MySQL migration-modernization... a mess! Now I have to put some order in my plans.

Deviant Art has been into trouble because of polemics in separating what is deviant from garbage. Also they have redone the entire site, they are brave heart, and the community is strong. Now I just have a hidden profile to watch some porn silently, and got nothing to post... at list nothing that I can put my signature on it.

I made a new video explaining why I think people should use SpaceHey rather than Twitter or Facebook. Click this link to see it on YouTube, but I am uploading the thumbnail image here also. Can't embed yet.
