Silent Hill Player Gender

Post by EsoArt on Thu Aug 02, 2012 8:14 pm

It struck me as being interesting how many female gamers tend to like Silent Hill as a series. So I am creating this poll concerning gender to get a bit of an idea about gender distribution in the playerbase.

It would also be cool if some people would state their gender and maybe explain what they like about Silent Hill or more specifically what initially drew them to the series when they first started playing the games.

Well, to start off, my gender is male. :)

I personally fell in love with Silent Hill through the music first. I just thought it was some of the most beautiful, haunting music I had ever heard. I was referred to the series by a female friend of mine who had been a fan for about a year, when I was 12 years old.

After I fell in love with the music, my first major interaction with the series was... and I don't like to admit it... the movie. I know that sometimes people that come into the series through the movie are looked down upon, but whatever. I wanted to play the games, but I didn't have the money to, and the first movie was free on on-demand one time. I watched it and was like "I NEED TO PLAY THESE GAMES RIGHT THE FUCK NOW". Silent Hill 2 was my first SH game: I borrowed it from the same friend that referred me to the series.

The rest is history. :)
I don't have any good images that I could use as a signature. So, here's a red "Q":

When you're raised by a gamer (my dad), you're bound to be one too! One way to get a gaming girl.

I remember watching my dad play Silent Hill 1 and 2 when I was really little. I was immediately entranced by the games. Maybe it was because of my age, but it touched me in a way, the horror touched me in a way that nothing else has been able to do. I just looooveeddd watching my dad play through the games. Then when I got older, he handed the reigns over to me, and that's when I took over. Ever since, I've owned and played all the games, and will do the same with the future releases :D It is my favorite video game series of all time.

Male here. I read some synopsis/plot analysis stuff about the first two games at GameFAQs and thought "hey, this stuff sounds pretty cool" (though I don't remember what had brought me to that point in the first place) and not too long after I found SH2 at Target for $20 and have been playing the games ever since.

Good idea. I also think it will be interesting to uncover which entries of the series boys and girls respectivly like more. I bet most of girls prefer sh2 because of it's love story.
I'm a man, yet cried as well when Mary read her letter in the end. Just like WClaudia i was sucked in sh world by dad, when he brought PS home one day. He started to play it (sh) and quickly rejected, focusing on Dino Crisis. But i stayed, even being terrified. Personally like sh and sh4tr more than others.

Girl here!

Like WhiteClaudia, it's by watching someone (my brother) play Silent Hill 2 when I was around 9-10 that I fell in love with the game. Unlike any other things I had seen at such a young age, it was dark, scary yet mysterious and very attracting. So as soon as my brother allowed me to use his PS2  I started playing it and since then I am used to play it at least once or twice a year. It's the complexity (the whole psychological thing I mean, the game itself not being too hard to play) and depth of the story that have me fascinated. the game is a real journey through the human mind in its most extreme chaos and disturbance. I believe the game is what led to me to get interested in psychology and psychoanalysis.

I liked playing SH3 and SH4 but they never affected me the way SH2 did!
I was thinking...you're nice, but you can't help me.

Male. Kind of like the above, I was drawn to the series through other people playing it. A few older friends played the first game and it scared me into oblivion, what with me being like 6 at the time. Later when I picked up a copy of SH4, I thought big boy me at 12 or 13 was ready for the series that was so scary to me as a child.

...

I wasn't. But now I've finished them all, so yeah!

Male. In comparison to most people on this forum I'm really just a newbie, only having been a fan since early 2011 when i first saw the first Downpour trailer.

Male. I played the demo of SH1 when I was 6 and it scared the crap out of me. It was in 2010, I got curious and tried SH1 again (13 at the time), again it scared the crap out of me but I liked the game and then tried SH2 and that's how I got into the series.

Male. I bought a used PS1 from a local gaming store and it came with two free rentals. I got RE2 and it wasn't working, before they switched the PS they swapped the RE2 rental for SH saying it was similar and they wanted to ensure it wasn't just the disk. After that I replaced the now obviously defective system but still had the SH rental long enough to never look back... well... this is technically looking back... to never look back on it like a bad thing.
It's really late... just pretend I said something awesome.

Female. Bought a ps2 when it came out. Was disappointed with Kingdom Hearts, FFX, and RECVX because I felt they were inferior to my PS1 games, the previous generation had more depth. Bought SH2 because I love horror and it was recommended in PSM magazine. (That was the best PS mag ever.) Played it. Was blown away. Screamed 'NOW THIS IS WHAT I BOUGHT A PS2 FOR! THIS KIND OF QUALITY!', then I bought SH1 and loved Harry. 3 was not out yet.

Male.

When I visited my cousin once I checked which PS 1 games he has. I was introduced to Parasite Eve 1 and SH 1 and loved them both.

I wanna be a black chick

Edit: Wait, totally didn't understand this thread at first...

I'm a male, and I played SH1 when it first came out and it scared me, so I fell in love. I haven't actually been scared since, lol, but the series is really cool so I stuck with it.

Male.

I first heard about Silent Hill when I was 11 or 12 I think... there was a SH3 review on Game Sauce (remember, that cheesy but addictive show?) and I really liked the fact that it looked scarier and more original than RE (I really enjoyed RE in that time). A year later I played the SH4 demo and I loved it... that same year (I was 13), I bought Silent Hill 2. I was the only person of my age who was enjoying this game but my father was (and is still) interested in the series, he especially loves SH4. The I bought SH 3,4 Silent Hill 1 later the same year (and got a second SH1 copy the following year). And then I bought every new silent hill game at their release day.

Anyway. From that point, I became a big fan.

Male. I played the demo of Silent Hill when I was a kid. Then when I was in high school, I bought Silent Hill 2 after talking about the depth of the SH games with a friend who was a bigger fan than I at the time. Since then, I've yet to look back.
Oh, you think darkness is your ally. You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it--I didn't see the light until I was already a man. By then, it was nothing to me but blinding! The shadows betray you because they belong to me!

Whoops, I'm not a CIS gender. I didn't mean to walk into the clubhouse. I'll go fly my flags over there in the corner. So sorry.

I am a male. I played SH 2 first as I saw the game in a rental store. I read the back cover and thought it would be cool. Beautiful, compelling, and tragic would've been much better words to describe the beloved second Silent Hill. I love the series the because transitions, locations, and monsters are very similar to a series of continuous dreams I've had since the mid 1990s.

I'm very glad you pointed that out! :D I was thinking about making a post similar to this one but decided against it. I wish more people didn't see gender as such a black and white thing. :)
